Buick's aggressive pricing for the Electra E5, its first electric model based on GM's Ultium platform, seems to be getting good initial results.

The Electra E5 has already received more than 8,000 orders, Buick announced in a post on its official WeChat account yesterday. This comes just 12 days after the model's official launch in China.

Buick launched the Electra E5 in China on April 13, offering five versions with starting prices of RMB 208,900 ($30,130), 222,900, 225,900, 239,900, and 278,900 respectively.

The Electra E5 is a mid-size five-seat SUV with a length, width and height of 4,892 mm, 1,905 mm and 1,655 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,954 mm.

The starting price of RMB 208,900 is very aggressive for an electric SUV of that size.

BYD's Tang EV starts at RMB 282,800 and measures 4,900 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width and 1,725 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm.

The Model Y, the best-selling electric SUV in China, measures 4,750 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width, 1,624 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,890 mm currently starting at RMB 261,900.

Seventy-eight percent of consumers who ordered the Electra E5 chose versions priced at RMB 225,900 and RMB 239,900, Buick said.

The car is available in three range versions with CLTC ranges of 545 km, 603 km and 620 km.

Its highest-priced, with a range of 603 km, is the dual-motor 4WD version, while the other versions are single-motor versions.

The highest range version has a maximum motor power of 150 kW and uses a ternary lithium battery pack with a capacity of 80 kWh.

The Electra E5 four-wheel drive version has a front permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 143 kW and a maximum torque of 305 Nm and a rear induction asynchronous motor with a maximum power of 68 kW and a maximum torque of 160 Nm. It is equipped with an 80-kWh ternary lithium battery pack.

Of the consumers who ordered the Electra E5 so far, 42 percent chose the model with a CLTC range of 620 km, according to Buick.

The N7 SUV, a new model of BYD's premium new energy vehicle (NEV) brand Denza, seems to have gained good initial acceptance.

The Denza N7 has already received 10,569 pre-orders, just seven days after pre-orders open, it said today on Weibo.

Denza opened reservations for the N7 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, but notably, its pricing information was not released.

Several hours after pre-sales began, Denza announced that the N7 had received 5,367 pre-orders in its first six hours.

Although the price of the N7 was not announced, Zhao Changjiang, general manager of Denza's sales division, said on Weibo on December 20 that the SUV aims to capture the market for traditional internal combustion engine cars priced around RMB 400,000 ($57,900).

The Denza N7 measures 4,860 mm in length, 1,935 mm in width and 1,602 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,940 mm, according to the model's previous regulatory filing.

The model will be available in a single-motor version as well as a dual-motor version, with the former having a peak motor power of 230 kW and the latter having an additional motor with a peak power of 160 kW.

On March 26, Zhao said on Weibo that with the announcement of Denza's partnership with French high-end audio brand Devialet on March 22, there were many customers who wanted to get the Denza N7 launched and available as soon as possible.

Based on inquiry volume data, the model is expected to receive 30,000 orders before its mid-year launch, Zhao said at the time.

Zhao said in February that the Denza N7 would be launched in the first half of this year.

Denza is a joint venture set up by BYD and Daimler in February 2011, when they each held a 50 percent stake in the company. Last year, BYD's stake in Denza was increased to 90 percent.

Denza's only model currently on sale, the D9 MPV, was launched on August 23, 2022, with deliveries starting October 26.

The brand sold 10,398 vehicles in March, up 41.95 percent from 7,325 in February, according to figures it announced earlier this month.

Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group (Evergrande NEV), the electric vehicle (EV) unit of China's Evergrande Group, has put production of its first model on hold, after warning of the risk a month ago.

Evergrande NEV has already delivered more than 900 Hengchi 5 units to consumers, but will suspend production of the model at its Tianjin plant due to a lack of funding, according to a Hong Kong Stock Exchange announcement yesterday.

The group plans to resume production of the model in May, the announcement added.

Hengchi 5 is the first mass-produced model of Evergrande NEV's Hengchi Auto, and its deliveries started on October 29, 2022.

The model is currently available in only one version, with a starting price of RMB 179,000 ($25,930).

On December 2, Reuters reported that Evergrande NEV suspended mass production of the Hengchi 5 due to a lack of sufficient new orders.

On March 23, Evergrande NEV said in a Hong Kong Stock Exchange announcement that it had continued to push ahead with cost-saving initiatives to focus its financial resources on supporting mass production of Hengchi 5, with layoffs at its Swedish subsidiary National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB.

However, Evergrande NEV would be at risk of halting production in the event that additional liquidity is not available, the announcement said.

The group will plan to launch a number of flagship models if it can seek more than RMB 29 billion in future financing and hopes to get them into mass production, the announcement said.

Interestingly, the Hengchi 5 received an OTA upgrade on April 3, when the H-Pilot assisted driving system became available for the first time.

Trading of Evergrande NEV's shares in Hong Kong has been suspended from April 1, 2022, and the timing for restarting trading has not yet been determined.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will continue to allow its car owners unlimited free access to battery swap stations along highways in China for the upcoming golden week, following a similar campaign earlier this year.

For the upcoming Labor Day holiday, all NIO owners will have unlimited free access to battery swap stations along highways, the electric vehicle (EV) maker announced today on its mobile app.

The Labor Day holiday in China runs from April 29 to May 3 this year, and NIO owners will have free access to these battery swap stations from April 28 to May 4, although vehicles used for operations are excluded.

Most NIO owners currently have the benefit of four to six free battery swaps per month, with a few early adopters having unlimited access to the service.

The benefits NIO is offering for the upcoming holiday season are in addition to the benefits owners already have.

The company offered similar benefits during the Chinese New Year holiday earlier this year, allowing for a spike in the number of services offered at its battery swap stations.

NIO offered free access to battery swap stations from January 13 to February 5 during this year's Chinese New Year holiday, which ran from January 21 to January 27.

On January 27, NIO's battery swap stations reached an all-time high of 62,356 services in a single day, according to its previously announced data.

The free battery swap service provided during the Chinese New Year holiday did not put additional cost pressure on NIO, as the revenue generated by its charging stations at the time largely covered those costs, the company said at a media briefing in early February.

As of April 25, NIO had 1,369 battery swap stations in China, including 362 along highways, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

The company also has 2,512 charging stations in China, providing 14,903 charging piles.

NIO's goal is to add 1,000 battery swap stations this year, bringing the number of facilities to 2,300 by the end of 2023.

Geely Galaxy, the new energy vehicle (NEV) sub-brand of Geely Auto Group, saw the first production vehicles of its first model, the L7, roll off the production line, signaling that the model is not far from being officially launched and delivered.

The first production vehicles of the L7 have rolled off the production line and are being shipped across China, Geely Galaxy announced today on Weibo.

Yesterday, Geely Galaxy said the L7 has accumulated more than 10,000 orders since it began allowing consumer pre-orders two months ago, although the model's price has not yet been announced.

Geely Auto Group officially launched the new Geely Galaxy brand on February 24 and unveiled the first production model, the L7, saying the SUV will be available in the second quarter of this year.

The new brand plans to launch a cumulative total of seven models by 2025, including four plug-in hybrid models in the L series and three all-electric models in the E series.

Geely Galaxy will launch the L6 in the third quarter of 2023, the L5 in the second quarter of 2024, and the L9 in 2025.

In the all-electric product sequence, Geely Galaxy will launch the E8 in the fourth quarter of 2023, the E7 in the second quarter of 2024 and will launch the E6 in the third quarter of 2024.

The Geely Galaxy L7 is a hybrid SUV with a length, width and height of 4,700 mm, 1,905 mm and 1,685 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,785 mm.

The vehicle is powered by a 1.5T engine with a thermal efficiency of 44.26 percent, ranking first among known production engines, Geely said at the February 24 launch event.

Geely announced at that launch that the L7 was available for pre-order, but the price was not revealed. The model is currently expected to cost less than 200,000 yuan ($29,000).

Voyah, Dongfeng Motor's new energy vehicle (NEV) brand, made its first sedan model available to tap into the increasingly crowded mid-to-large-size electric sedan market.

Voyah officially launched the Zhuiguang (literally, chasing the light) on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, offering three versions with starting prices of RMB 322,900 ($46,980), RMB 352,900 and RMB 432,900, respectively.

That is higher than the starting price of RMB 209,900 for Rising Auto's F7 sedan, which went on sale late last month, and lower than RMB 458,000 for the NIO ET7.

The Voyah Zhuiguang is 5,088 mm long, 1,970 mm wide, with a height of 1,515 mm and 1,505 mm in two specifications, and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm.

The Rising F7 measures 5,000 mm in length, 19,53 mm in width and 1,494 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. The NIO ET7 measures 5,101 mm in length, 1,987 mm in width and 1,509 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,060 mm.

The Voyah Zhuiguang is equipped with a dual-motor four-wheel drive system with a maximum power of 160 kW for the front motor and 215 kW for the rear motor.

Its powertrain has a total power of 375 kW and a maximum torque of 730 Nm, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

The two less expensive versions of the car are equipped with a semi-solid-state battery with a capacity of 82 kWh, while the long-range version is equipped with a ternary lithium battery with a capacity of 109 kWh.

It is worth noting that the semi-solid-state battery does not give the model a significantly longer range: the 82 kWh version has a CLTC range of 580 km, while the 109 kWh version has a range of 730 km.

On fast charge, the Voyah Zhuiguang can achieve a range of 230 km in 10 minutes.

Voyah is the brand launched by Dongfeng Motor in late 2020, with the first model, the Voyah FREE, going on sale in China in June 2021, available in extended-range technology and in all-electric versions.

On May 7, 2022, Voyah's second model, the Dreamer MPV, was launched and deliveries began on July 16.

Voyah delivered 3,027 vehicles in March, up 116.21 percent year-on-year and up 173.44 percent from February, according to figures it announced earlier this month.

The brand delivered 5,682 vehicles in the first quarter, up 53.86 percent year-on-year.

Svolt Energy’s Dragon Armor Battery makes real-life debut at Shanghai auto show

In a 4C fast-charging solution, the Dragon Armor Battery has 32 percent higher pack capacity compared to the 46 series high nickel cylindrical battery, according to Svolt Energy.

Svolt Energy, which was spun off from Great Wall Motor, gave its Dragon Armor Battery its real-life debut at the ongoing Shanghai auto show, after unveiling the battery late last year.

The battery maker showcased the Dragon Armor Battery at the Shanghai auto show -- which began April 18 and runs through April 27 -- with a video of a previous thermal runaway test on display.

In the test, heating triggered a thermal runaway of a cell in the middle of the pack, but no open fire was seen throughout the pack, Svolt Energy said in an April 19 post on its WeChat account.

The single cell runaway did not spread to adjacent cells, achieving the ultimate power battery safety, the article said.

Compared to the 46-series high nickel large cylindrical battery, the Dragon Armor Battery has 5 percent higher capacity on a 2C fast-charging solution, according to Svolt Energy.

On the 4C fast-charging solution, the Dragon Armor Battery has a 32 percent higher pack capacity compared to 46-series high nickel cylindrical batteries, the company said.

In addition, the highly integrated design of the Dragon Armor Battery reduces size and weight, effectively lowering battery costs, according to Svolt Energy.

The battery is compatible with a wide range of chemistries and can be carried in the A00-D class models, it said.

The strong compatibility shortens the development cycle of new models for car companies, and the versatility of the battery pack further reduces procurement costs, according to the company.

Since the announcement, Dragon Armor batteries have received multiple intent orders from customers, Svolt Energy said, without disclosing customer names.

Svolt Energy unveiled the Dragon Armor Battery at its third Battery Day event on December 15 in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, where it is headquartered.

Like BYD's Blade Battery and 's Qilin Battery, Svolt Energy's Dragon Armor is an innovation in battery pack structure that does not involve battery chemistry.

The Dragon Armor Battery system with lithium iron phosphate cells has improved volumetric pack efficiency to 76 percent and can have a range of more than 800 kilometers, the company said at the time.

Dragon Armor batteries with high-manganese iron-nickel cells can achieve a range of more than 900 kilometers, while such batteries with ternary cells can exceed 1,000 kilometers, Svolt Energy said.

The battery is expected to be on production models in 2023, including an SUV and a coupe in production in October 2023, Svolt Energy Chairman and CEO Yang Hongxin said at the Battery Day event.

Svolt Energy installed 0.43 GWh of batteries in China in March, ranking No. 9 with a 1.53 percent share, according to data released this month by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

Zeekr saw its 100,000th vehicle roll off the line today, marking a milestone in the history of the Geely-owned premium electric vehicle brand.

The 100,000th vehicle, a Zeekr 009 MPV powered by 's Qilin Battery, was produced at Zeekr's plant in Ningbo, Zhejiang province.

This comes 548 days after its first production vehicle rolled off the production line on October 19, 2021, which means Zeekr is averaging about 5,474 vehicles per month in mass production.

The rollout of the 100,000th vehicle is another important milestone for Zeekr, marking a new phase of growth for the brand, the company said in a press release.

This year, Zeekr will continue to enrich its product matrix and accelerate its strategy to expand into overseas markets, it said.

On the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, Zeekr unveiled its European strategy and said that the flagship Zeekr 001 shooting brake and Zeekr X urban SUV will debut in Sweden and the Netherlands in the fourth quarter.

Zeekr was officially launched as an independent company in March 2021, with its first model, the Zeekr 001, launched on April 15, 2021, and deliveries starting in October 2021.

The first production vehicle of Zeekr 001 rolled off the production line on October 19, 2021, and 199 units of the model were delivered that month.

On February 9, 2022, Zeekr's cumulative deliveries reached 10,000 units, and last October 15 Zeekr announced the delivery of its 50,000th vehicle.

On November 1, 2022, Zeekr's second model, the Zeekr 009 MPV, was launched, and its deliveries began on January 15.

On April 12, Zeekr launched its third model, the Zeekr X, which it hopes will become the benchmark for luxury compact cars.

The Zeekr X is already taking reservations and deliveries will begin in June, with the model aiming to deliver 40,000 units this year.

Deliveries of the ME version of the Zeekr 009 MPV began on April 17, marking the global debut of the Qilin Battery in production vehicles.

The Zeekr 009 ME version is equipped with a battery pack with a capacity of 140 kWh, providing a CLTC range of 822 km, the highest of any pure electric MPV.

Zeekr delivered 6,663 vehicles in March, bringing the cumulative deliveries since inception to 93,182. The company aims to see sales double to about 140,000 units this year compared to last year.

The roof LiDAR setup has been complained by some to affect the aesthetics of the vehicle design. Now, local Chinese LiDAR manufacturers are working to put the component inside the vehicle.

NIO's LiDAR supplier Innovusion has partnered with local auto glass giant Fuyao Group to create LiDARs that can be mounted behind the front windshield, according to a press release yesterday.

There are currently two main mounting options for LiDAR, mounting it on top of the car like NIO's models, or placing the part next to the headlights as does.

Mounting LiDAR behind the front windshield, which does not affect the vehicle's exterior design and makes LiDAR less susceptible to the external environment, becomes one of the best options, Innovusion said.

However, the solution faces a number of technical challenges, including detection signal attenuation, noise from the LiDAR motor, and heat dissipation problems.

Through its innovation, Fuyao has been able to optimize the LiDAR's waveband transmittance, Innovusion said.

The initial collaboration between the two will be based on Innovusion's Robin-E, which has dimensions of 117 mm * 100 mm * 44 mm, a total weight of about 450 grams, less than 9 W of power consumption and less than 20 dB(A) of noise.

The two companies have started joint research and development and have already achieved LiDAR integration with the camera behind the front windshield, with detection performance attenuation of less than 10 percent, Innovusion said.

Founded in 2016, Innovusion has R&D centers in Silicon Valley, Suzhou and Shanghai, and LiDAR manufacturing sites in Ningbo and Suzhou.

On March 28, 2022, NIO delivered the first ET7 vehicles, marking the mass production of Innovusion's Falcon LiDAR product. ET7 and other newer NIO models are equipped with Innovusion's image-grade, ultra-long-range LiDAR Falcon.

Prior to Innovusion, Hesai (NASDAQ: HSAI) announced on April 14 a new LiDAR called the ET25, which it says is an in-cockpit LiDAR designed to be placed behind the front windshield.

The ET25 is an ultra-thin, long-range LiDAR, with the "ET" standing for Extremely Thin and the "25" referring to its height of just 25 mm.
