NIO’s 1st 15 ultra-fast 500 kW charging stations go into operation

The 500 kW chargers can charge an EV from 10 percent to 80 percent in as little as 20 minutes for a 400V model and 12 minutes for an 800V model.

NIO's first 500 kW ultra-fast chargers are now in operation after its first third-generation battery swap stations went live last week.

The electric vehicle (EV) maker announced the development today, saying the first 500 kW ultra-fast charging stations are put into operation in 12 cities including Haikou, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Qingdao, and three highway service areas.

500 kW is the peak power of the charging facility, which has a maximum charging current of 660 A, and NIO said the performance far exceeds that of other supercharging stations currently in the electric vehicle industry.

In charging an EV from 10 percent to 80 percent with the charger, it takes as little as 20 minutes for a 400V model and 12 minutes for an 800V model, NIO said.

The company equipped the facility with an ultra-lightweight liquid-cooled cable it developed in-house that weighs less than half of a traditional cable and can be easily operated with one hand, it said.

The charging pile has a 15.6-inch high-definition retina screen that makes it easy for users to view operational procedures and charging information, NIO said.

NIO unveiled the charger, along with the third-generation battery swap station, at the NIO Day event last December 24, and the first 10 third-generation swap stations went into operation on April 13.

The 500 kW ultra-fast charger and the third-generation battery swap stations form a new generation of all-in-one stations that intelligently allocate power, allowing the ultra-fast charger to perform more efficiently and consistently, according to NIO.

At the same time, thanks to the battery swap stations' high charge and powerful energy storage capacity, this becomes the easiest ultra-fast charging product to deploy under the same grid distribution conditions, the company said.

NIO previously announced a goal to add 1,000 new battery swap stations this year to bring the total number of the facility in China to 2,300. It also hopes to add 10,000 charging piles in China this year, including supercharging piles as well as destination charging piles.

As of April 17, NIO had 1,352 battery swap stations in China, as well as 2,488 charging stations offering 14,768 charging piles.

Zeekr, Geely's premium electric vehicle brand, has begun deliveries of the Zeekr 009 MPV with Qilin Battery, the first time this ultra-long range battery pack has been available to the general public.

Deliveries of the ME version of the Zeekr 009 MPV have officially begun, marking the global debut of the Qilin Battery in a production vehicle, Zeekr announced yesterday on its mobile app.

The Zeekr 009 ME version is powered by a battery pack with a capacity of 140 kWh that provides a CLTC range of 822 km, the highest of any pure electric MPV, Zeekr said.

CATL officially launched the Qilin Battery, or CTP (cell to pack) 3.0 battery, on June 23 last year, claiming to bring a new level of battery system integration to a new level.

The Qilin Battery allows volume utilization to exceed 72 percent and energy density to reach 255Wh/kg, supporting a vehicle range of 1,000 kilometers, the company said at the time.

On August 27 last year, Zeekr and CATL announced that the Zeekr 009 would be the world's first vehicle to carry the Qilin Battery, while the Zeekr 001 would use an ultra-long-range version of the Qilin Battery and would be the world's first production vehicle to carry the 1,000-kilometer range Qilin Battery.

On November 1 last year, Zeekr launched the Zeekr 009, which is available in two versions, WE and ME, with starting prices of RMB 499,000 ($72,560) and RMB 588,000 respectively.

The WE version is equipped with a ternary lithium battery pack with a capacity of 116 kWh and a CLTC range of 702 km. Deliveries of this version of the Zeekr 009 began on January 15.

The Zeekr 009 comes standard with a dual-motor drive system, both with 400 kW of peak motor power and 686 Nm of peak torque, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

Zeekr delivered 6,663 vehicles in March, up 271.20 percent from 1,795 in the same month last year and up 22.14 percent from 5,455 in February, according to figures it announced on April 1.

Many car companies have announced new models or technologies ahead of the Shanghai auto show, and XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) will be the next.

XPeng will host a press conference on Sunday, April 16, to showcase its next-generation vehicle technology architecture, according to a press release from the company today.

The press conference, which will be hosted by XPeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng, will begin at 3:00 pm Beijing time on April 16.

XPeng did not disclose what the conference will involve but said it will be streamed live on channels including its official website.

In addition, at the 2023 Shanghai auto show, which begins on Tuesday, April 18, the company will debut its next production model, it said.

The Shanghai auto show will be held April 18-27 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, and XPeng's booth is 6A08, in Hall 6.1.

The company will debut its next production model on the morning of April 18, with a live broadcast from 09:40 - 10:00 am Beijing time.

XPeng didn't mention the model's name, though it's apparently the G6, an SUV that will compete with the Model Y.

The company began warming up for the G6 earlier this month, releasing several images of the model's exterior.

On March 17, XPeng management said during the company's four-quarter earnings call that the G6, a new energy SUV in the price range of 200,000 yuan ($29,210) to 300,000 yuan, will be unveiled at the Shanghai auto show and will be officially launched and delivered by the end of the second quarter.

XPeng's monthly sales target for the G6 is 2-3 times that of the P7, Mr. He said during the call.

The G6 will have a significantly improved range that will exceed expectations, and will have much more interior space than similar offerings from competitors, he said.

"See you in Shanghai on April 18," Yangwang said, hinting that the U8 will be on display at the upcoming Shanghai auto show.

The Shanghai auto show will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center from April 18-27, with media days from April 18-19 and professional visitor days from April 20-21, while the general public can enter from April 22-27.

BYD's booth is 7A06 at Hall 7.1 and Yangwang is at 8A05 at Hall 8.1. On April 7, Yangwang said the U9 electric supercar will be on display at the Shanghai auto show.

BYD officially launched the Yangwang brand on January 5, along with the first two models -- Yangwang U8 and Yangwang U9.

The U8, the first production model of the Yangwang brand, is a hardcore off-road SUV that is more than 5 meters long and 2 meters wide.

The model is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4 seconds and will be priced at RMB 1 million ($146,000) level.

The Yangwang U8 has the performance, safety and reliability of a hardcore off-road SUV, with intelligent extrication and emergency avoidance capabilities in complex road conditions, along with technology and intelligence, BYD previously said.

The Yangwang U9, on the other hand, is a supercar that will also be priced at the RMB 1 million level, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.

BYD announced the Yangwang brand along with a technology platform called e⁴, which it said was the first mass-produced four-motor independent drive technology platform. Both the U8 and U9 will be equipped with e⁴ technology.

On April 10, BYD officially unveiled its intelligent body control system called DiSus in Shenzhen, which is another technological breakthrough after its DM super hybrid technology, e-Platform 3.0, Blade Battery and e⁴ platform.

The BYD DiSus system is divided into three branches, including the Intelligent Damping Body Control System (DiSus-C), the Intelligent Air Body Control System (DiSus-A), and the Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System (DiSus-P).

DiSus-P, which has a suspension adjustment travel of up to 200 mm and can lift all four wheels simultaneously as well as independently for a single wheel, will first be equipped on the Yangwang U8.
