Berlin innovation center will help Nio's electric vehicles get smarter in Europe and worldwide, the company said.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) has opened an innovation center in Berlin, Germany, as the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) company ramps up its European presence.
The innovation center, which officially opened on July 4, is located at Rotherstraβe 19, 10245 Berlin and covers 1,500 square meters, according to an announcement posted yesterday on Nio's mobile app for Europe.
This is the first Nio R&D center in Europe, and five different teams will work on software development for Nio products and technologies from now on, according to the announcement. The company has a global design center in Munich.
The innovation center is also responsible for localization and software testing, with focus areas including autonomous driving, digital systems, digital architecture, digital cockpit, user experience, user interface and in-car voice assistance system NOMI, according to Nio's announcement.
The new innovation center in Berlin complements existing software development centers in Beijing and San Jose, where Nio has developed about 50 percent of its software.
The innovation center's development team consists of more than 25 employees from 11 different countries, Nio said. Late last month, the company said Nio employs more than 1,300 people in Europe, most of them located in Germany.
The innovation center in Berlin will also serve as a research and development center for Nio Power and as an operations control center for all European battery swap stations, Nio said.
Nio is bringing its entire service system from China to Europe, including the iconic battery swap stations. As of June 30, Nio had 18 battery swap stations in Europe.
On September 16, 2022, Nio announced that its Nio Power Europe Plant in Budapest, Hungary, saw the first battery swap station roll off the assembly line.
The Berlin innovation center location was specifically chosen to attract Europe's top talent in software development, machine learning, artificial intelligence and voice systems.
With Nio's smart technology and the Berlin innovation center, the company's EVs will become smarter not only in Europe, but also worldwide, said Zhang Hui, vice president of Nio Europe.
Users can give feedback to NOMI directly from inside the vehicle, and the Berlin innovation center will help better respond to the desires of German and European customers, Nio's announcement said.
Nio is strengthening its partnerships with local suppliers to deliver better infotainment systems.
In the video-on-demand space, Nio has expanded its partnerships with companies such as Spotify, Nvidia, Bosch and Qualcomm. With a software over-the-air update, Nio now welcomes ScreenHits as a video-on-demand technology for European users, it said.
ScreenHits TV, a UK-based streaming provider, gives users in Europe access to video-on-demand content in 59 countries and 30 languages, according to Nio.

The service will begin a trial run on July 1, with available vehicles being the ET7 and EL7 and a minimum order length of seven days.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will start a trial of a service next month that will allow its car owners in China the flexibility to rent the company's cars while traveling in Europe.
NIO's destination travel service in Europe will begin a trial run on July 1, and those interested can make reservations at that time, according to an article posted today on the NIO App.
The service will be available in Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark, covering 11 cities including Oslo, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, and Amsterdam.
NIO will offer two models, the ET7 and EL7, in the trial, but for now it is only available to NIO car owners.
The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker launched the ET7, ET5 and EL7 in Europe at the NIO Berlin 2022 event on October 7, 2022. The EL7 is known as the ES7 in China and is using that new name in Europe because of the lawsuit with Audi.
ET7 deliveries in Europe started in October 2022 and EL7 deliveries there started on January 31 of this year.
Owners wishing to use NIO's service must place an order 14 days in advance, with a minimum order length of seven days, at a price of 700 euros ($760) per week. Any use of the car beyond 7 days will be calculated at 100 euros per day.
The benefits provided by NIO for consumers of the service include battery swap service free of charge, free NIO House drinks, and 7*24 hours Chinese service.
NIO Houses are NIO's flagship showrooms, which function as a space to display and sell vehicles while providing a quality lifestyle for NIO owners. The company's showrooms also include the much smaller NIO Spaces.
NIO currently has six NIO Houses in Europe, located in Oslo and Kristiansand, Norway; Berlin, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf, Germany; and Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
NIO plans to start supporting the use of NIO Credits within its Chinese mobile app for NIO Houses overseas at the end of July, it said.

The ET5 Touring and EL6 are priced higher in Europe than in China due to factors including transportation costs, local taxes and operating costs.
Hours after the ET5 Touring was launched in China, NIO (NYSE: NIO) rolled out the model, as well as the EL6, known in China as the new ES6, in Europe.
Both models will be available in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and deliveries will both begin in the fourth quarter.
Including the battery, the ET5 Touring starts at 59,500 euros ($65,130) in Germany for the 75-kWh standard range version and 68,500 euros for the 100-kWh long-range version.
For reference, both versions of the ET5 Touring start at the same prices in China as the regular ET5, RMB 298,000 ($41,820) and RMB 356,000 respectively.
In the Netherlands, the starting price for the 75-kWh ET5 Touring is €63,900 ($69,930) and the 100-kWh version is €72,900.
They cost 706,000 SEK ($66,560) and 816,000 SEK in Sweden, 517,000 DKK ($75,950) and 637,000 DKK in Denmark, and 532,869 NOK ($50,740) and 620,619 NOK in Norway, respectively.

100-kWh | 68,500 EUR | 72,900 EUR | 816,000 SEK | 637,000 DKK | 620,619 NOK |
For the EL6, including the battery, the 75-kWh starts at €65,500 in Germany and €74,500 for the 100-kWh version. Because of the lawsuit with Audi, NIO's ES series models have been rebranded as the EL series in Europe.
The EL6 starts at €67,900 and €76,900 in the Netherlands, SEK 769,900 and SEK 879,000 in Sweden, DKK 547,000 and DKK 667,000 in Denmark, and NOK 595,016 and NOK 682,766 in Norway, respectively.

100-kWh | 74,500 EUR | 76,900 EUR | 879,000 SEK | 667,000 DKK | 682,766 NOK |
NIO has previously said that the base prices of its models are essentially the same globally, with the difference being that they take into account factors including transportation costs, local taxes and operating costs in different regions.
If consumers choose to purchase the ET5 Touring or EL6 using the BaaS (battery as a service) model, the starting price in Germany is €12,000 lower for the 75-kWh version and €21,000 lower for the 100-kWh version.
It is worth noting that NIO's battery swap stations in Europe are only available to owners of vehicles purchased using the BaaS model. In China, these stations are available to all NIO consumers whether they purchase a model with batteries included or based on the BaaS model.
In addition to the purchase option, NIO also offers a subscription option in Europe. In Germany, for the EL6, if consumers choose a fixed-term subscription of 36 months, the monthly price is €1,179 for the 75-kWh version and €1,309 for the 100-kWh version.

The ES6 is called the EL6 in Europe because of Audi's trademark lawsuit.
NIO (NYSE: NIO) said yesterday that it would launch new "models" in Europe on June 15, but didn't specify which ones. Now the answer has been revealed.
"We are revealing our new NIO models, the ET5 Touring and the EL6, on 15.06.2023, 19:00 CEST in a global online launch event and you are invited!" the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker tweeted today.

The ET5 Touring will be NIO's first new model to be launched simultaneously in the global market, and its Chinese launch will start at 19:00 Beijing time (7:00 am US Eastern time) on June 15, a few hours before the European launch.
That European launch event starts at 1:00 pm US Eastern time on June 15, or 1:00 am Beijing time on June 16.
The EL6 is the SUV known in China as the ES6, which is using a new name in Europe because of the Audi lawsuit. Audi believes NIO's ES8 and ES6 infringe on its trademark rights for its S8 and S6 models.
NIO last held a launch event in Europe on October 8, 2022, when the company introduced the ET7, EL7 and ET5 to European consumers. The EL7 is the ES7 sold in China.
The company launched the new ES6 in China on May 24, and its deliveries began the night of the launch.
Earlier today, a message posted by NIO on its mobile app hinted that the ET5 Touring will be released for consumers in China, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany.
The ET5 Touring show car and vehicles for test drives have recently arrived at NIO stores, and test drives will be available on June 15, it said.
NIO began accepting pre-orders for the ET5 Touring in China today, although the model's specifications and price have not yet been announced. Its delivery will begin on June 16, NIO said.
The production team of British automotive media Top Gear will be involved in the ET5 Touring launch event, according to information shared by the NIO App today.
As of today, the ET5 Touring show cars are available at 248 NIO stores in 48 cities across China.
NIO's stores include the flagship NIO Houses as well as the smaller NIO Spaces, and as of May 30, they numbered 118 and 269 in China, respectively, according to data it released on June 1.

NIO could bring the ET5 Touring and the new ES6 to European customers at a launch event next week.
NIO (NYSE: NIO) will launch new models in Europe next week, and the latest information suggests it may be more than just the ET5 Touring.
"Brand new NIO models are coming. June 15, 19:00 CEST," reads the text of a picture on the front page of NIO's English-language website.
"Join us online and get a preview experience of the brand new NIO models www.nio.com #inspiredbylife," NIO says in the text included in the "Add to Calendar" button on its website.
The event's European start time corresponds to June 15 at 1:00 pm US Eastern Time, or June 16 at 1:00 am Beijing Time.
Recent information indicates that NIO is expected to launch the ET5 Touring at the event, a model that has been seen frequently in Europe as well as China over the past two months.
The ET5 Touring has been quietly arriving at NIO stores in China, longtime NIO follower and car blogger @肉肉爸比ev said on Weibo yesterday.
The model will enter NIO's showrooms on the evening of June 9, and those interested can check it out on June 10, the blogger said, without providing any further information.
NIO will report first-quarter earnings before the US stock market opens on June 9 and then hold an analyst call.
NIO's management had previously mentioned that this variant of the ET5 would debut in Europe, and the model was developed primarily for European customers.
It's not clear if NIO will hold a separate launch for the model in China, as the company said on June 1 that the ET5 Touring will be launched globally in June and start its delivery with Chinese market.
NIO used the word "models" instead of "model" in the event preview on its English website, suggesting that it will launch more than one model at next week's event.
In addition to the ET5 Touring, NIO may also launch the new ES6 to local customers at the European event.
NIO launched the new ES6 in China on May 24, and deliveries began that night.
The new ES6 has a starting price in China of RMB 368,000 ($51,740) including batteries, making it the cheapest NIO SUV.
NIO last held a launch event in Europe on October 8, 2022, when the company introduced the ET7, EL7 and ET5 to European customers.
The EL7 is the ES7 sold in China, and that new name is due to NIO's lawsuit with Audi. The ES6 is expected to be similarly known as the EL6 in international markets.

More images of the NIO (NYSE: NIO) ET5 touring have been revealed, as the model gets closer to its official launch.
Auto blogger Delu shared several images of the model on the NIO App today, saying that NIO is filming promotional videos for the model in Norway.
"This is one of the top three touring models in my mind, they are the Volvo V60, Audi RS6 and now the ET5 Touring," the blogger wrote.
On May 9, CnEVPost obtained two spy photos of the ET5 touring appearing on the streets of Europe, showing that the car has the yellow color exclusive to the ET5 sedan sold in China.
CnEVPost has learned from a source is that the model is expected to make its official debut in Europe in June.
In January, NIO co-founder and president Qin Lihong said the company would launch the ET5 touring, a sister model of the ET5, in June or July.
That new variant of the ET5 will debut in Europe, where the model was developed primarily for European consumers, Qin said at the time.
Such models have a large market in Europe, while sales of sedans are low, which is the opposite of the situation in China, Qin said at the January event.
"Derivatives of sedans are a niche market in China, but the opposite is true in Europe. We don't see many real sedans in Europe," he said at the time.
In early March, the ET5 touring appeared on a filing list from Chinese industry regulators and its key specifications were revealed.
The NIO ET5 touring has a length, width and height of 4,790 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,499 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,888 mm, in line with the ET5 sedan.
It will be equipped with dual motors produced by NIO's electric drive systems division in Hefei, Anhui province, with a maximum power of 150 kW and 210 kW, respectively, and can support a top speed of 200 km/h.
As with several other NIO models based on the NT 2.0 platform, the NIO ET5 touring supports the option of a retractable electric tow hook, which can tow a maximum of 1,400 kg of caravan weight.
