NIO's (NYSE: NIO) first 10 third-generation battery swap stations went live today in 10 Chinese cities, marking the start of its aggressive infrastructure buildout this year.

The electric vehicle company had said on March 20 that its first 10 third-generation battery swap stations would go live on March 28. But that didn't happen, and NIO only made the next-generation stations' real-life debut that day.

The cities that saw the first third-generation NIO battery swap stations go live were Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hefei, Chengdu, Haikou, Wuxi, Zhengzhou, Qingdao and Harbin, according to an article posted today on NIO's mobile app.

The sites for the 10 third-generation battery swap stations were decided by 866 NIO users through the NIO App's wish list feature, according to the article.

As of April 13, NIO has accumulated 1,342 battery swap stations in China, of which 351 are located along highways.

NIO also has 2,451 charging stations, including 14,541 charging piles. Its charging map has access to more than 680,000 third-party charging piles in China.

NIO announced late last year a plan to add 400 battery swap stations in 2023, but that plan was raised to 1,000 on February 21.

William Li, NIO's founder, chairman and CEO, said at the time that the company would further accelerate the deployment of battery swap stations, aiming to have more than 2,300 battery swap stations in China by the end of 2023.

Mass production of NIO's third-generation battery swap stations was well underway, with volume production expected to begin in April and deployment of stations accelerating in May, Li said at the time.

Starting in June, NIO will basically keep building 120-150 battery swap stations per month, he said.

NIO's third-generation battery swap station, released at the NIO Day 2022 event on December 24, 2022, can store up to 21 battery packs, up from 13 for its predecessor generation and five for the first generation of the facility.

This next-generation facility increases the daily service capacity of a single site to 408 services, a 30 percent increase over the second generation.

Notably, some of NIO's third-generation battery swap stations will be equipped with two LiDARs and two Nvidia Orin chips, for a total computing power of 508 TOPS.

BYD China Deliveries Electric eMobility eV EV Data Insurance Registrations Li Auto Neta Nio Tesla Weekly Data XPeng

Insurance registrations for week ending Apr 9: Tesla 6,973, Li Auto 4,177, NIO 1,316

Starting this week, insurance registration data will no longer be available, with Li Auto's sharing a surprise exception.

The major sources that provide insurance registration data for China's auto industry have stopped sharing the data, but Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) has shared content that allows us to still have access to some of the data.

For the week of April 3 to April 9, Li Auto sold 4,177 units, far outpacing other new car brands and again becoming the weekly sales leader for new brands in the Chinese market, the automaker said yesterday on Weibo.

Li Auto didn't specify what the sales figure was based on, though they were apparently insurance registrations. Previously, we had access to those numbers every Tuesday, and Li Auto's practice for the past two weeks has been to share some of them on Wednesdays.

The tables shared by the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) maker show that NIO (NYSE: NIO) vehicles had 1,316 insurance registrations last week, and (NYSE: XPEV) had 904.

Neta vehicles had 1,526 insurance registrations last week, Zeekr had 1,476 and Leapmotor had 1,157.

Li Auto's tables also provided insurance registrations for vehicles from luxury brands in China last week, with Mercedes-Benz in the top spot with 14,817, BMW in second with 13,506, and Audi in third with 10,573.

Tesla came in fourth with 6,973 units and Li Auto in fifth. Lexus was No. 9 with 1,493 units, and NIO was No. 10.

The vendor that provided us with the data said they will not be able to continue to provide such data, saying it was the decision of the data source.

The bloggers who previously shared the data on Weibo have also stopped sharing such data.

China CPCA CPCA Ranking Electric eMobility eV EV Data Monthly Data Nio NIO ET5 NIO ET7 Top EVs

NIO ET5 ranks 7th in top-selling premium sedan list in China with 6,437 Mar sales

The models ahead of the ET5 are all from German luxury automakers Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi.  |  US | NIO HK | NIO SG

The ET5, which has been the main seller for NIO (NYSE: NIO) in recent months, saw its position unchanged in a premium sedan ranking last month.

With 6,437 retail sales in March, the ET5 ranked No. 7 in China for premium sedan sales starting at more than 300,000 yuan ($43,560), according to a list released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The ranking is the same as in February, when the ET5 sold 6,471 units at retail, as previously reported by CnEVPost.

The ET5 is the least expensive of the NIO product array, with a starting price of RMB 328,000. Deliveries of the model begin on September 30, 2022.

NIO delivered 10,378 vehicles in March, including 3,203 SUVs, and 7,175 sedans, according to figures the company announced on April 1.

Considering that NIO's sedans are only ET7 and ET5, this means that ET7 delivered 738 units in March.

The ET7 delivered 649 units in February. Earlier today, NIO announced that in addition to the new ES6, it will launch the 2023 ET7 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18.

Except for the ET5, none of the other models in the premium sedan sales ranking are battery-electric vehicles. The models with higher sales than the ET5 are all from German luxury car companies Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi.

The Audi A6L topped the list, with 15,614 retail sales in March, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class ranked second with 14,145 units and the BMW 3 Series third with 13,924 units.

In January-March, the NIO ET5 ranked seventh with 18,703 units sold at retail. The model was No. 6 on the January-February list with 12,266 units sold.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class was the best-selling premium sedan in China in the first three months with 40,261 units sold. The Audi A6L ranked second with 40,246 units. The BMW 3 Series ranked 3rd with 37,151 units.

As in March, the premium sedans that sold more than the ET5 in January-March were all from German luxury car companies.

NIO to launch new ET7 at Shanghai auto show besides new ES6

This is the first time has mentioned the existence of the new ET7, after rumors began to emerge last month.  |  NIO US | NIO HK | NIO SG

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will launch the new ET7 at the Shanghai auto show next week, in addition to the launch of the new ES6.

"At Auto Shanghai 2023, we are bringing the NIO House to the show floor once again," the electric vehicle (EV) maker announced today.

The full range of NIO models equipped with the Banyan intelligent system will be presented, the new ES6 will debut and the 2023 ET7 will be officially launched, NIO said.

Banyan is the software architecture for NIO's NT 2.0 platform-based models, and the company's NT 1.0 platform-based models use a software architecture called Aspen.

The upcoming biennial Shanghai auto show will be held from April 18-27, with press days from April 18-19, professional visitor days from April 20-21, and general public admission from April 22-27.

The show will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, and NIO's booth is located in Hall 6.1, Stand 6A01.

The N-Box augmented entertainment console and AR glasses developed by NIO will be equipped on the EC7 for the first time for the public to experience, according to the company.

This is the first time NIO has confirmed the existence of the new ET7, after rumors began to emerge last month.

At the end of last month, some local media reported that the current NIO ET7 had been discontinued and that the facelift would be optimized for exterior and interior details.

On March 28, an image circulating on social media Xiaohongshu showed that the 2023 ET7 will have a new gold exterior option and will be available with a tow hook option.

Inside, the improved ET7 will have several details optimized, including the seats, wireless charging panel power, and low-speed beep, according to the information in the image.

The NIO ET7 was launched at the NIO Day 2020 event on January 9, 2021, the company's first sedan, with deliveries beginning on March 28, 2022.

Deliveries of the ET7 remained around 3,000 units per month for the vast majority of the second half of last year, but the figures slipped to 1,379 units in December.

Regarding the new ES6, NIO mentioned on April 1 that the model will be unveiled at the Shanghai auto show.

Notably, like the ES7, which is known as the EL7 in Europe, the new ES6 will also be known as the new EL6 in international markets, according to a previous NIO press release.

China Electric eMobility eV Nio NIO Benefits

NIO scales back purchase benefits, NOP+ software to start charging in Jul

will no longer give customers a free home charger, and will upgrade NOP+ to a formal release and start a subscription system for the software starting July 1 for RMB 380 per month.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) announced two important decisions today that are expected to spur order growth in the short term, as well as allow the software to start contributing to revenue.

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker is scaling back the benefits it offers customers, as its user base has recently surpassed 300,000.

Starting June 1, customers who purchase the NIO ET7, EC7, ES7 and ET5 will no longer continue to receive free home chargers, and the free battery swap benefit will be adjusted to four times per month, the company announced today.

As background, NIO has offered customers free home chargers and four free battery swaps per month for the past several years.

If customers choose to forgo the free home charger, they will receive six free battery swaps per month.

For customers who pay a deposit for the above models on or before May 31, the benefits for first-time owners will remain the same.

Test drives and lock-in orders for the new ES8 will be allowed starting in June, and customers who pay a deposit for the model before August 1 will still enjoy these benefits before they are scaled back.

For all customers who have already received deliveries of the vehicles, their rights are not affected, NIO stressed.

The move is expected to boost potential customers' car purchase decisions in the short term, as the 7 kW home charger NIO has been giving away in past years costs RMB 7,500 ($1,090) each.

The free battery swap entitlement that NIO offers owners 4-6 times per month is valid for life.

The move comes at a time when NIO's user base is getting larger. The EV maker delivered 10,378 vehicles in March, bringing its cumulative deliveries since inception to 320,597, according to data released earlier this month.

In addition to the reduced vehicle purchase rights, the NOP (Navigate on Pilot) + assisted driving software, which NIO offers owners a free trial of, will require a fee starting in July.

The free trial of NOP+ Beta will end on June 30, and from July 1 the software will be upgraded to a formal release and on a subscription basis for RMB 380 per month, the company announced today.

NOP+ is NIO's assisted driving feature based on its NT 2.0 platform, which enables a point-to-point assisted driving experience on highways and urban expressway scenarios.

NOP+ Beta features include automatic ramp entry and exit, automatic selection of the optimal lane, and active passing of slow-moving vehicles.

On December 27, 2022, NIO began recruiting the first beta testers for NOP+ Beta, which was limited to 10,000 slots.

On February 20, NIO began allowing owners of all its NT 2.0 platform vehicles to apply for a trial of NOP+.

As of April 8, nearly 45,000 owners have participated in the free trial of NOP+ Beta, and the mileage has exceeded 21 million kilometers, NIO said today.

NIO has collected more than 38,000 user feedbacks in the trial, allowing more than 20 iterations of the software, it said.

Currently, NOP+ Beta has covered 95 percent of China's core highways and urban expressways, and has significantly improved the safety and comfort of the experience in scenarios including following, changing lanes to overtake and ramp passing, NIO said.

NOP+ will gradually switch and upgrade to BEV architecture in 2023, and the leading hardware capability and algorithm architecture will help NOP+ cover more road scenarios, the company said.

In addition, starting in the second half of 2023, the pilot assisted driving feature in the middle of battery swap stations on highways will gradually cover all such stations, NIO said.

Notably, NIO has set aside time for potential customers to consider it.

Customers who purchase ET7, ES7, EC7 and ET5 before June 1, and those who purchase the new ES8 before August 1, will receive 2 years of free access to NOP+.

Customers who have previously purchased the NIO Pilot software will receive at least 5 years of free NOP+ if they purchase a new Banyan-based model from NIO again.

NIO to allow Chinese consumers to lock in EC7 orders starting Apr 10

Test drives for the EC7 will open on April 10, with deliveries to begin in mid-May.  |  NIO US | NIO HK | NIO SG

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will allow consumers to lock in orders for the EC7 electric coupe SUV starting next Monday, with the model just a month away from its planned delivery date.

Starting at 10 am on April 10, the EC7 will be available for consumer order lock-ins, NIO announced in an article posted on its mobile app today.

EC7 show cars and vehicles for test drives have already begun shipping to NIO showrooms in cities across China, and test drives will be available starting April 10, NIO said.

Until NIO starts accepting orders for lock-in, consumers can still get the benefits of the earliest buyers by paying a reservation deposit of RMB 5,000 ($730). These benefits include using the deposit as RMB 10,000 for the purchase of the car.

These reservation benefits will no longer be available after the EC7 begins accepting locked orders.

Deliveries of custom vehicles for the EC7 will begin in mid-May, NIO said.

Orders for the EC7 with locked-in configurations by April 16 will be scheduled for production and delivery essentially in the order in which consumers pay their reservation deposits.

Starting April 17, the EC7 will be scheduled for production and delivery in the order in which consumers lock in their configurations.

Some options may result in later deliveries of customized EC7s, with deliveries expected to begin as early as July for models with the optional rear comfort package and August for EC7s with the optional coral red interior.

Here is a video about the design of the EC7 shared by NIO on its app.

NIO officially launched the EC7, its second coupe SUV after the EC6, at the NIO Day 2022 event last December 24, with a length of 4,968 mm, width of 1,974 mm, height of 1,714 mm and a wheelbase of 2,960 mm.

NIO offers an intelligent dimming glass option for the EC7's roof, the first time the company has introduced this option in one of its models.

Thanks to an optimized exterior design, the EC7 has a wind resistance coefficient of just 0.23 Cd, which NIO said is the lowest of any mass-produced SUV in the world.

The EC7 is equipped with a 180-kW permanent magnet motor at the front and a 300-kW induction motor at the rear, allowing the motor to reach a peak power of 480 kW.

The powertrain allows the EC7 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, making it NIO's fastest-accelerating SUV.

NIO currently offers three versions of the EC7, including a version with a 75-kWh standard range battery pack, a version with a 100-kWh battery pack, and a premiere version with a 100-kWh battery pack.

Including the battery, the starting prices for these three versions are RMB 488,000, RMB 546,000 and RMB 578,000 respectively.

If consumers choose NIO's battery as a service (BaaS) program, the starting prices are RMB 418,000 for both regular versions and RMB 450,000 for the premiere version. Their monthly battery rental costs are RMB 980 yuan, 1680 yuan and 1680 yuan respectively.

NIO's NAD (NIO Autonomous Driving) feature will also be available for the EC7, and the full feature package will be available on a subscription basis at a cost of RMB 680 yuan per month. However, the software is not yet available.

NIO offers the first EC7 owners a 10-year unlimited mileage warranty, up to six free battery swaps per month, and free home charger.

It is worth noting that with the EC7 available, the EC6 is not discontinued.

On February 13, the new, NT 2.0 platform-based EC6 appeared in a filing catalog showing the model's appearance and core specifications.
