NIO (NYSE: NIO) unveiled the new ES6 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, but did not announce an official launch date or price. Now, a new report provides additional information.

The new ES6 will be officially launched on May 24, and its price information will be announced at that time, local auto industry media D1EV reported on Thursday after visiting several NIO stores in Beijing.

The model's show cars will be available at NIO stores from the day of launch, and consumers who have recently reserved the car will be invited to test drive it in batches, according to the report.

Compared to the old ES6, the new model will keep only in the Sport version, with the previously available higher-priced Performance and Signature versions optimized to become the new ES7 model currently on sale, the report said.

Deliveries of the new ES6 will begin at the end of May, the report said, citing salespeople at NIO stores.

William Li, founder, chairman and CEO of NIO, unveiled the 2023 ET7 sedan and gave the debut of the new ES6 SUV based on the NT 2.0 platform at a brief launch event on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18.

Li did not announce the SUV's exact specifications or pricing at the time, saying only that the model's official launch would be in late May.

Nevertheless, NIO has already started allowing consumers to reserve the model with a RMB 5,000 deposit.

In an interview with local media at the time, Li said that the delivery schedule for the new ES6 would be different from NIO's previous models and that deliveries would begin soon after the launch.

Pricing information for the new ES6 has not been released, and Li said in that interview that NIO would not engage in a price war, so the model's price would not be set particularly low.

For reference, the old ES6 based on the NT 1.0 platform was previously offered in three versions -- Sport, Performance and Signature -- with starting prices of RMB 386,000 ($55,840), 426,000 and 496,000 respectively.

For NIO, the new ES6 will be a model of strategic importance, as it will be the least expensive of NIO's SUVs.

From January to August 2022, 32,877 ES6 units were delivered, contributing 46 percent of NIO's total deliveries of 71,556 units during the period, according to figures monitored by CnEVPost from the company and the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The new ES6 is now widely seen as being powerfully equipped and competitively priced, which has sparked discontent among some owners who previously purchased the ES7 SUV.

Last month, several ES7 owners formed a WeChat group to collectively express their dissatisfaction that the upcoming new ES6 means NIO has betrayed them.

Launched on June 15, 2022, the NIO ES7 is the company's second model based on the NT 2.0 platform and the first SUV on the second-generation platform.

The NIO ES7 is currently offered in two versions, priced at RMB 468,000 and 548,000 including the battery. If consumers choose to purchase using the battery rental service BaaS, the starting price is RMB 398,000.

NIO began deliveries of the ES7 on August 28, 2022, with a cumulative total of 15,123 units delivered by the end of January this year, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

The NIO ES7 is similar in appearance and key specifications to the new NIO ES8, but smaller in size and less expensive. Previously, the model that sits behind the flagship ES8 in NIO's product array was the ES6.

Although NIO has not released information on the specifications of the new ES6, a regulatory filing in January has revealed the core specifications of the model.

The new NIO ES6 measures 4,854 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width and 1,703 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,915 mm.

For comparison, the old ES6 is smaller, measuring 4,850 mm in length, 1,965 mm in width and 1,758/1,731 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm.

The new ES6 will be equipped with dual motors supplied by NIO's motor division XPT, with a maximum power of 150 kW and 210 kW respectively, the same as the ET5 sedan.

This specification is lower than the motors of the ES7, which has dual motors with a maximum power of 180 kW and 300 kW, respectively.

BYD officially launches Seagull to expand its presence in China’s EV market

BYD has officially launched the Seagull with a starting price of just RMB 73,800, after starting pre-sales of the Yangwang U8, which costs over RMB 1 million, last week.

The price range covered by BYD's product array is seeing an unprecedented expansion, with the official launch of a new model priced as low as RMB 73,800 ($10,660), after the Yangwang U8 started pre-sales for more than RMB 1 million.

The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant officially launched the micro battery electric vehicle (BEV) model BYD Seagull, the latest addition to its Ocean series, at a launch event today.

The car is available in three versions with starting prices of RMB 73,800, RMB 78,800 and RMB 89,800 respectively.

BYD unveiled the Seagull and started its pre-sales on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, with the three versions priced at RMB 78,800, RMB 83,800 and RMB 95,800 respectively.

The company's final pricing announced today means that the starting prices for all three versions are RMB 5,000, RMB 5,000 and RMB 6,000 lower than the pre-sale prices.

The Seagull is an A0-class EV based on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 with a length, width and height of 3,780 mm, 1,715 mm and 1,540 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,500 mm.

The model is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 55 kW and peak torque of 135 Nm, accelerating from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

The vehicle is available in two range versions with blade battery capacities of 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh, which provide a CLTC range of 305 km and 405 km, respectively.

The BYD Seagull supports fast charging, taking 30 minutes to charge from 30 percent to 80 percent.

For BYD, the Seagull will likely be a model of strategic importance, especially when compared to the high-end Yangwang models.

Prior to 2020, BYD was targeting mainly the RMB 100,000 to RMB 200,000 NEV market, as there were huge barriers for local Chinese car companies to enter the mid- to high-end market at the time.

With the launch of the BYD Han in the second half of 2020, BYD began to gradually expand its presence in the RMB 200,000 to 300,000 range.

In the fourth quarter of last year, the BYD Han, which primarily targets the RMB 200,000 to 300,000 yuan range, sold more than 30,000 units each month.

As BYD gradually gained a foothold in the mid- to high-end market, the company began to move into the higher price range, announcing the Yangwang brand and the brand's first two models, the U8 off-road SUV and U9 supercar, on January 5.

On April 18, Yangwang started the pre-sales of the U8 at the Shanghai auto show, with a pre-sale price of RMB 1,098,000.

In addition to the Yangwang brand, BYD also has the Denza and the yet-to-be-launched F brand, targeting a market with prices above RMB 300,000.

The importance of the Seagull is that it allows BYD's products to cover a lower price range and thus a broader market than these premium models.

In 2022, the price range of RMB 100,000 to RMB 150,000 accounted for 6.68 million retail sales in China, contributing 33 percent of all passenger car sales, according to data released last month by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Models in the price range of RMB 50,000 to RMB 100,000 sold 3.84 million units at retail in China last year, ranking second with a 19 percent share, according to the CPCA.

The Seagull, currently BYD's lowest-priced model, is targeting a market that the NEV maker has not previously entered but has extensive space.

The BYD brand's product array includes the Dynasty and Ocean series, with the former's lowest-priced model being the Qin, which starts at RMB 99,800, and the latter's Dolphin, which starts at RMB 116,800, before the Seagull was launched.

BYD sold 207,080 NEVs in March, including 40,850 units of the Qin family and 30,077 units of the Dolphin, data monitored by CnEVPost showed.

The Seagull's lower prices are expected to meet the demand of younger demographics as well as some families for a second vehicle, helping BYD reach its aggressive sales target this year.

BYD sold 1,868,543 vehicles in 2022, including 1,863,494 NEVs. The company discontinued production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022.

BYD aims to sell at least 3 million vehicles this year and will strive to reach 3.6 million, the company's chairman and president Wang Chuanfu said at an investor conference late last month.

BYD aims to become the No. 1 automaker in China by the end of this year, Wang said at the time.

The Seagull is expected to be another hot seller in the Chinese EV market, judging by its pre-sale performance.

The model received more than 10,000 orders 24 hours after pre-sales began, BYD said on April 19.

BYD Seagull to be officially launched on Apr 26, gets strong acceptance in pre-sale

BYD Seagull was unveiled and started pre-sale on April 18 with a pre-sale starting price of RMB 78,800 and received more than 10,000 orders in 24 hours.

BYD's (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) mini electric vehicle (EV) Seagull will officially launch in three days, and its performance in the pre-sale phase bodes well for strong future performance.

The new energy vehicle (NEV) maker posted a countdown to the Seagull's upcoming arrival on Weibo today, saying the model will be available on April 26.

In addition to the 3-day countdown image, BYD also shared a video of the Seagull, showing the exterior and interior details of the model.

BYD unveiled the Seagull and started pre-sales on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18. The car is available in 3 versions with pre-sale prices of RMB 78,800 ($11,430), 83,800 and 95,800 respectively.

This is not the final price of the model, and BYD's previous practice was that the final price is slightly lower than the pre-sale price.

The Seagull received more than 10,000 orders 24 hours after pre-sales began, BYD said earlier this week.

The model, the latest addition to BYD's Ocean series, is an A0-class EV based on the e-Platform 3.0 with a length, width and height of 3,780 mm, 1,715 mm and 1,540 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,500 mm.

The BYD Seagull is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 55 kW and peak torque of 135 Nm, accelerating from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

The car is available in two range versions, with the lower-priced two models having a CLTC range of 305 km and the highest-priced version having a range of 405 km.

The Seagull uses BYD's blade batteries with pack capacities of 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh respectively.

The car supports fast charging, taking 30 minutes to charge from 30 percent to 80 percent.

There were rumors last year that the Seagull would have a version with sodium-ion batteries, but this has not yet become a reality.

However, on April 20, local media outlet 36kr reported that 's and BYD's sodium-ion batteries will both be carried in production cars within the year, and they will both be a mix of sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries.

BYD's sodium-ion battery will be in mass production in the second half of the year, and the first model to carry the battery will be the Seagull, the report said, citing a BYD source.

Voyah, Dongfeng Motor's new energy vehicle (NEV) brand, made its first sedan model available to tap into the increasingly crowded mid-to-large-size electric sedan market.

Voyah officially launched the Zhuiguang (literally, chasing the light) on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, offering three versions with starting prices of RMB 322,900 ($46,980), RMB 352,900 and RMB 432,900, respectively.

That is higher than the starting price of RMB 209,900 for Rising Auto's F7 sedan, which went on sale late last month, and lower than RMB 458,000 for the NIO ET7.

The Voyah Zhuiguang is 5,088 mm long, 1,970 mm wide, with a height of 1,515 mm and 1,505 mm in two specifications, and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm.

The Rising F7 measures 5,000 mm in length, 19,53 mm in width and 1,494 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. The NIO ET7 measures 5,101 mm in length, 1,987 mm in width and 1,509 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,060 mm.

The Voyah Zhuiguang is equipped with a dual-motor four-wheel drive system with a maximum power of 160 kW for the front motor and 215 kW for the rear motor.

Its powertrain has a total power of 375 kW and a maximum torque of 730 Nm, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

The two less expensive versions of the car are equipped with a semi-solid-state battery with a capacity of 82 kWh, while the long-range version is equipped with a ternary lithium battery with a capacity of 109 kWh.

It is worth noting that the semi-solid-state battery does not give the model a significantly longer range: the 82 kWh version has a CLTC range of 580 km, while the 109 kWh version has a range of 730 km.

On fast charge, the Voyah Zhuiguang can achieve a range of 230 km in 10 minutes.

Voyah is the brand launched by Dongfeng Motor in late 2020, with the first model, the Voyah FREE, going on sale in China in June 2021, available in extended-range technology and in all-electric versions.

On May 7, 2022, Voyah's second model, the Dreamer MPV, was launched and deliveries began on July 16.

Voyah delivered 3,027 vehicles in March, up 116.21 percent year-on-year and up 173.44 percent from February, according to figures it announced earlier this month.

The brand delivered 5,682 vehicles in the first quarter, up 53.86 percent year-on-year.

Polestar 4, the new model from Polestar, the premium electric vehicle maker owned by Geely and Volvo Cars, went on sale in China with a starting price range that is higher than Tesla's Model Y.

Polestar launched the Polestar 4 yesterday on the first day of the Shanghai auto show, with a starting price range of RMB 349,800 ($50,870) to 533,800.

The car is available in six versions, including three single-motor versions with starting prices of RMB 349,800, 387,800 and 417,800 respectively, and three dual-motor versions with starting prices of RMB 453,800, 483,800 and 533,800 respectively.

This price range is significantly higher than that of the Model Y, currently the best-selling electric SUV in China, which is offered in three versions at RMB 261,900, 311,900, and 361,900.

The Polestar 4's single-motor rear-drive versions are powered by permanent magnet synchronous motors with a maximum power of 200 kW and a maximum torque of 343 Nm, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds.

Its dual-motor versions have two permanent magnet synchronous motors both with a maximum power of 200 kW at the front and rear, for a combined total of 400 kW, and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

The Polestar 4 has a CLTC range of 612 km to 709 km.

Polestar was founded in 2017 by Volvo and Geely, and the first product, the Polestar 1, was only available in limited numbers and has been discontinued.

The Polestar 2, which will be officially delivered in 2020, is the brand's first real production model on sale and will only be produced at the plant in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, in eastern China.

Polestar made the Polestar 3 SUV's global debut on October 12, 2022, when it announced its two versions with starting prices in China of RMB 880,000 and RMB 1,030,000, respectively.

On March 17, Polestar officially unveiled the Polestar 3 in China at a price that is nearly RMB 200,000 lower than the model's international debut last year.

BYD didn't reveal any more information about the Song L, but provided an image showing the model's front design.

It first teased the model on Weibo yesterday and shared a picture showing the rear design, but did not announce the model's name.

The upcoming biennial Shanghai auto show will be held from April 18 - 27, where April 18 - 19 will be the media days, April 20 - 21 will be the professional visitors' days, and the general public can visit from April 22 - 27.

The Song Max DM-i and Song Pro DM-i currently on sale are part of the Dynasty series, while the Song Plus DM-i and Song Plus EV are part of the Ocean series. BYD's soon-to-be-revealed Song L will be a new member of the Dynasty series.

Song family models have been the top-selling BYD models for the past several months, though they were surpassed by the Qin family models in March.

China Electric eMobility eV Product Launch Zeekr Zeekr X

Zeekr launches Zeekr X SUV to gain further share from market dominated by German luxury automakers

CEO believes that despite having a presence in the compact car market, German luxury brands are not offering any truly competitive luxury products.

German luxury automakers are seeing a loss of share in the premium market in China as they are slow to make the transition to electrification. Now, with the launch of a new electric SUV with strong performance and competitive pricing, this process could be further accelerated.

Zeekr, Geely Holding Group's premium electric vehicle (EV) brand, officially launched its third model, the Zeekr X, at an event in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu on Wednesday.

The model is based on Geely's Sustainable Electric Architecture (SEA) and is positioned as an urban sport utility vehicle suitable for adults, children and any accompanying pets, Zeekr said.

With a length, width and height of 4,450mm, 1,836mm and 1,572mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,750mm, the Zeekr X is a typical compact SUV.

Zeekr hopes to disrupt the compact luxury car market, which is dominated by Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, with the SUV. Andy An, its CEO, said at the launch that the market currently has only luxury brands but no real luxury products.

With the launch of the Zeekr X, compact size no longer means sacrificing space, performance or features, An said.

Zeekr has packed the Zeekr X with a host of features that feel fresh, including facial recognition unlocking, a moveable center screen, electric folding rear seats, and an in-car refrigerator that can provide temperatures as low as -15 degrees Celsius.

In terms of performance, the dual-motor version of the Zeekr X boasts a combined maximum power of 315 kW and maximum torque of 543 Nm, and can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.

Even the single-motor version of the Zeekr X can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

This kind of powerful performance from a compact model is not often seen in the Chinese auto industry, and such markets are usually considered niche markets.

However, An said in a media group interview after the launch that the compact market lacks true luxury products and that this needs to be fundamentally changed.

An does not believe it is reasonable to judge a model's potential by the existing market landscape, because as long as a car company offers a product that meets demand, the market will get bigger, as proven by Zeekr's first model, the Zeekr 001.

The shooting brake market targeted by the Zeekr 001 was previously seen as having a very small total addressable market in China, but the model was an unexpected success and 71,941 units were delivered in 2022.

The Zeekr X is available in three versions, one starting at RMB 189,800 ($27,610) and the other two at RMB 209,800.

An told media, including CnEVPost, after the event that Zeekr will not launch models priced lower than the Zeekr X.

All three versions of the Zeekr X are powered by a ternary lithium battery pack with a capacity of 66 kWh and a CLTL range of up to 560 km.

The Zeekr X is already taking pre-orders and deliveries will start in June.

In response to a question from CnEVPost, An said the company is targeting 40,000 deliveries of the SUV this year.

In addition to being available in China, the Zeekr X will also be available in Europe. An said there is plenty of room in the global market for compact SUVs.

An mentioned that the Zeekr 001 will also be brought to Europe, without revealing more about when, but said Zeekr will officially unveil its European strategy at the Shanghai auto show in a few days.

The Zeekr 001 was launched on April 15, 2021, and deliveries began in October 2021. On November 1, 2022, Zeekr's second model, the Zeekr 009 MPV, was launched, and deliveries began on January 15.

Zeekr aims to double its sales to about 140,000 units this year. It delivered 15,234 vehicles in the first quarter of the year, and the goal means it needs to deliver an average of about 14,000 vehicles per month next.
