Regulatory filing: MG’s electric roadster Cyberster not far from launch in China

MG's electric roadster Cyberster is not far from being available in China after the model made its debut at the Shanghai auto show two years ago.

The arrival of the electric vehicle (EV) era has led to many models that feel fresh in China, and an electric roadster from MG is the latest one.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the latest batch of models that will soon be allowed to be sold in a catalog for public comment on April 11, and MG's Cyberster was included.

Entry into the catalog is the last major regulatory process for a model to be allowed to be sold in China. The public can submit feedback between April 12 and April 18.

MG has filed three versions for the Cyberster, including two single-motor versions as well as a dual-motor version.

The MG Cyberster is a two-seater with a length of 4,535 mm, a width of 1,913 mm, a height of 1,329 mm and a wheelbase of 2,690 mm.

Both single-motor versions are equipped with rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors, the lower version with 231 kW peak power and the other with 250 kW peak power, both supporting a top speed of 193 km/h.

The dual-motor version is equipped with two permanent magnet synchronous motors with peak power of 150 kW and 250 kW, respectively, and supports a top speed of 200 km/h.

The MG Cyberster is powered by ternary lithium-ion batteries from a joint venture between SAIC and .

It is worth noting that the MG Cyberster was first unveiled two years ago on the first day of the Shanghai auto show -- April 19, 2021 -- based on the MG cyber cube platform.

MG conducted a crowdfunding campaign for the roadster at the time, and then confirmed that the model would be mass-produced after the crowdfunding amount reached RMB 50 million.

The official release date and price information for the model are currently unknown.

MG, short for Morris Garages, is a vehicle brand owned by Shanghai-based SAIC Motor Corporation.

Samsung SDI, South Korea's third-largest battery maker, has opened a new battery research and development center in China to boost its technological competitiveness.

Samsung SDI said Sunday it opened the new center, called SDI China Research and Development Center (SDIRC), in Shanghai on Saturday, according to several South Korean media reports.

The R&D center will focus on building partnerships with Chinese universities and research institutes to secure core battery technologies, according to a report by Korea JoongAng Daily on April 2.

A new research lab under the center will focus on discovering new functional and affordable materials, according to the report.

Samsung SDI opened SDI R&D Europe (SDIRE) in Munich last July and SDI R&D America (SDIRA) in Boston last August. The Chinese research arm will complete the company's worldwide network, the report noted.

Through its global R&D network, the company hopes to ensure that the key framework for battery production, including advanced manufacturing methods, facilities, are competitive for different regional environments, including Europe, the US, and China, respectively, according to a report in the Korea Herald.

"By leveraging global technological competence and talent pools, we will further bolster our pursuit of outstanding technological competitiveness," the report quoted Samsung SDI President and CEO Choi Yoon-ho as saying.

Samsung SDI is the sixth largest battery maker in the world, with a 4.9 percent share in January-February, according to data released by South Korean market research firm SNE Research on March 30.

continued to rank No. 1 in January-February with a 33.9 percent share, the only global battery maker with a share of more than 30 percent.

LG Energy Solution and SK On are the two largest battery manufacturers in Korea, with 13.3 percent and 5.5 percent shares in January-February, ranking third and fifth respectively in the world.

Tesla seeks to build new battery plant with CATL in US, report says

As with Ford's deal structure, would own and operate the plant while licensing technology from , according to Bloomberg.  |  TSLA.US

Tesla is reportedly looking to build a new battery factory with CATL in the US, similar to the Chinese battery-maker giant's deal with Ford last month.

Bloomberg reported on the matter earlier today, saying Tesla discussed plans involving CATL with the US government.

Tesla representatives sought clarity on the Inflation Reduction Act rules that the US government is finalizing this week, and the company's senior director of global public policy Rohan Patel was among those involved in the discussions, according to the report.

Tesla hopes to build a plant wholly owned by it in partnership with CATL, similar to a deal Ford announced last month in Michigan, the report said.

Tesla is in expansion mode, deploying its $22 billion in cash to boost production and cut costs as it faces increasing competition, the report noted.

CATL produces lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a cheaper chemistry than the nickel-based batteries used in Western countries, and is key to the plan, the report said.

Tesla is considering building the battery plant in Texas to supply its electric vehicle assembly plant there, although the location has not been finalized, Bloomberg said, citing some people familiar with the matter.

As with Ford's deal structure, Tesla would own and operate the plant, while licensing technology from CATL, according to the report.

On February 13, Ford announced that it is investing $3.5 billion to build an LFP battery plant in Marshall, Michigan.

The plant, which is wholly owned by Ford, is the first battery plant to be wholly owned by a US automaker and will introduce LFP battery solutions for Ford's electric vehicle products.

The LFP battery plant is expected to start production in 2026 with an initial workforce of 2,500, Ford said last month.

The plant will have an initial design capacity of about 35 GWh per year and could supply power packs for about 400,000 Ford electric vehicles annually.

CATL is the world's largest maker of electric vehicle batteries, with a share far ahead of other peers.

CATL's installed battery volume in January-February was 25.5 GWh, up 34 percent from 19.0 GWh in the same period last year, according to data released yesterday by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

The Chinese battery giant continues to rank No. 1 with a 33.9 percent share, the only global battery maker with a share of more than 30 percent.
