Another new model from Polestar is coming, as the official debut of the Polestar 3 in China is just less than a month ago.

The all-electric high-performance SUV Polestar 4 will make its global debut on April 18, the first day of the Shanghai auto show, the premium electric vehicle maker owned by and Volvo Cars announced on April 11.

The upcoming biennial Shanghai auto show will be held from April 18-27, with press days from April 18-19, professional visitor days from April 20-21, and general public access from April 22-27.

Polestar's booth at the Shanghai auto show is located in Hall 6.2, and the company will hold a press conference on April 18 from 9:20 to 9:40.

The Polestar 4 will be the latest addition to Polestar's product family and will have the aerodynamics of a coupe and the space of an SUV, the company said.

The model is not a refinement of Polestar's existing SUV, but a newly built coupe SUV, said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of the EV maker.

The Polestar 4 is derived from Polestar's Precept concept design ideas and will have new technology, the company said.

Polestar did not reveal any more information about the Polestar 4. It will present the Polestar 3 at the Shanghai auto show as well as the 2024 Polestar 2.

Polestar was founded in 2017 by Volvo and Geely, and the first product, the Polestar 1, was only available in limited numbers and has been discontinued.

The Polestar 2, which will be officially delivered in 2020, is considered the brand's first real production model on sale, although the model has not been well received in China.

On October 12, 2022, the Polestar 3 SUV made its global debut, when Polestar announced two versions with starting prices in China of RMB 880,000 ($127,770) and RMB 1,030,000, respectively.

On March 17, Polestar officially unveiled the Polestar 3 in China, with a price reduction of nearly RMB 200,000 from the model's international debut last year.

Smart teases Smart #3, releases official ‘spy shots’

Smart has released a set of spy photos of the Smart #3 on Weibo, with text suggesting that the model will have sporty features.

Smart Automobile, the joint venture between and Mercedes-Benz, is starting to warm up for its second model, which may not be far from being unveiled.

Smart China posted a set of spy photos of the Smart #3 on Weibo yesterday, with text suggesting that the model will have sporty features.

Smart didn't mention any other information, but some local media reports say the Smart #3 is expected to be unveiled at next month's Shanghai auto show and will go on sale in China by the end of the year.

The model entered a catalog published by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in November 2022, showing it as a small SUV with a length, width and height of 4,400/4,542 mm, 1,844 mm and 1,556 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,785 mm.

For reference, the Smart #1, the first production model after the electrification of the Smart brand, measures 4,270 mm in length, 1,822 mm in width and 1,636 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

This means that the Smart #3 will be longer and wider than the Smart #1, but lower.

The Smart #3 has a peak motor power of 200 kW in the single-motor version and 115 kW and 200 kW in the dual-motor version for the front and rear motors, respectively.

The vehicle has a top speed of 180 km/h. It will be powered by ternary lithium batteries, and suppliers include CALB and Sunwoda, its regulatory information shows.

The Smart #1 went on sale in China on April 25, 2022, and deliveries started on September 24.

The model was designed by Mercedes-Benz, with the Smart R&D team leading engineering development, and is based on Geely's SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) architecture.

The Smart #1 is currently priced in China in the range of RMB 179,000 ($26,030) - RMB 24,5000.

Smart delivered 3,616 vehicles in February and a total of 15,998 vehicles since last September, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

China Electric eMobility eV Industry News Polestar Polestar 3 Product Launch

Polestar 3 officially unveiled in China, price cut by about $29,080 from previous

Polestar has officially unveiled the Polestar 3 in China today with what it calls a new pricing system.  |  Polestar.US

The first SUV from Polestar, the premium electric vehicle maker owned by and Volvo Cars, has been officially unveiled in China, but at a price reduction of about RMB 200,000 yuan ($29,080) from the model's global debut last year.

Polestar officially introduced the Polestar 3 in China today and announced what it calls a new pricing system, with the long-range dual-motor model starting at RMB 698,000 and the long-range dual-motor with performance pack model at RMB 798,000.

The Polestar 3 is Polestar's first SUV and will be the electric vehicle company's first all-electric model that will be produced in both China and the US.

Polestar gave the Polestar 3 SUV its global debut on October 12, 2022, when it announced its two versions with starting prices in China of RMB 880,000 and RMB 1,030,000, respectively.

The latest prices announced today mean that the starting price for the Polestar 3 regular long-range version has been reduced by RMB 182,000 and the starting price for the performance version has been reduced by RMB 232,000.

Information on Polestar China's website indicates that the expected delivery dates for both versions of the Polestar 3 are the fourth quarter of this year.

The Polestar 3 will be on display at the Shanghai auto show next month, and the model will go into production at Polestar's plant in Chengdu, Sichuan province, in the middle of this year, Polestar said today.

The 20th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2023) will be held from April 18-27, with media days from April 18-19 and professional visitor days from April 20-21, while the general public can visit from April 22-27.

Production is also expected to begin by mid-2024 at Polestar's plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, the automaker said when it unveiled the Polestar 3 last year.

At that point, the US will serve as the main supply location for North America and other markets. The plant is expected to make its first deliveries in mid-2024.

Polestar was co-founded by Volvo and Geely in 2017, and the first product, the Polestar 1, was only available in limited quantities and has been discontinued.

The Polestar 2, which started deliveries in 2020, is the brand's first real production model on sale and will only be produced at a plant in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, in eastern China.

Despite the Polestar 3's strong performance and configuration, its prices in China appear to be very high, as noted in a previous report by CnEVPost.

The Polestar 3's previous starting price of RMB 880,000 is almost twice the NIO ES7's starting price of RMB 468,000.

Both versions of the ES7 have a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 3.9 seconds, while the Polestar 3 performance version has the figure at 4.7 seconds and the long-range version at 5 seconds.

China Earnings Earnings Preview Electric eMobility eV Tesla XPeng

XPeng earnings preview: Q4 to be soft with promotions hitting margins

"We expect generally soft results and a weak 1Q23 outlook due to challenging demand and pricing dynamics," Edison Yu's team said.

US | XPeng HK

XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) will report fourth-quarter earnings on Friday, and as usual, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team provided their preview.

"We expect generally soft results and a weak 1Q23 outlook due to challenging demand and pricing dynamics," the team said in a research report sent to investors yesterday.

Soft fourth-quarter

XPeng will report its unaudited financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal 2022 on Friday, March 17, before the US markets open.

It delivered 22,204 vehicles in the fourth quarter, above the upper end of the guidance range of 20,000 to 21,000, but down 46.82 percent year-on-year and down 24.91 percent from the third quarter.

XPeng's previous revenue guidance for the fourth quarter was RMB 4.8 billion to RMB 5.1 billion, representing a year-on-year decrease of about 40.4 percent to 43.9 percent.

"We expect a soft quarter with deliveries already reported at 22,204, above management's guidance range (20,000-21,000), but with promotional activity hitting margins," Yu's team wrote.

The team expects XPeng to post revenue of RMB 5.4 billion yuan and a gross margin of 11.5 percent in the fourth quarter.

They expect XPeng's vehicle margin to be 8.5 percent in the fourth quarter, down 3.1 percentage points from the third quarter, and adjusted earnings per share of RMB -2.33.

The current analyst consensus in the Bloomberg survey is for revenue of RMB 5.7 billion, gross margin of 12.1 percent and adjusted EPS of RMB -2.25.

For the first quarter, Yu's team expects deliveries to be around 19,000-20,000 units and for gross margin to drop to single digits as price cuts take hold.

XPeng deliveries in January and February were 5,218 and 6,010 units respectively, for a cumulative total of 11,228 units. Insurance registration figures for the past two weeks suggest that the company did not see a significant improvement in deliveries in March.

Uncertainty in 2023

The key to XPeng's relevance going forward is to win back market share, and that could take several quarters to achieve, which has created significant uncertainty this year, Yu's team said.

Demand for the company's flagship SUV, the G9, has clearly been disappointing, despite mostly positive reviews, the team said, adding that they expect XPeng to potentially make pricing or SKU adjustments to the SUV in the coming months.

XPeng's new P7i sedan should help with order volume, but there won't be materially beneficial until the second quarter, the team said.

Most importantly, XPeng's upcoming Model Y competitor, the G6, needs to reach at least 5,000 units per month by the end of the year to be considered a success, the team said.

The team now expects XPeng to be on track to deliver 145,000 vehicles in 2023, a 10,000-unit downward revision from earlier, taking into account the decline in G9 sales.

How can capacity utilization be improved?

If XPeng's sales continue to be weak, its management may need to get creative to improve its capacity utilization, Yu's team said, adding that the easiest way to do that would be to sign some large fleet deals.

That may be hard in China, considering and GAC have stronger positions in the taxi and ride-sharing segment, but XPeng recently signed deals with some local car rental companies to buy its P7 sedan, the team noted.

XPeng entered into a strategic partnership with local car rental company eHi Car Services on July 19, 2022, and delivered the first few hundred cars to the latter.

On January 9 this year, XPeng signed agreements with car rental company China Auto Rental and 's travel service platform Xiaolinggou Travel Technology, and completed the delivery of the first XPeng P7 vehicles in Ningbo, Zhejiang province.

In addition, XPeng has restarted its expansion efforts in Europe, where large fleet deals could make sense due to the region's high percentage of corporate fleets and low availability of cheap BEV options, Yu's team said.

"We note BYD has an agreement with SIXT for 100,000 EVs and XPeng's vehicles fall into a similar price point. BYD also just announced a 5,000 unit agreement with UK's Octopus EV," the team wrote.

Another option is to partner more deeply with traditional OEMs on EVs and robotaxis, which could come in the form of equity investments or strategic alliances, according to the team.

China Denza Electric eMobility eV Industry News Leapmotor Neta price war

More Chinese EV makers promise no price cuts as price war intensifies consumer wait-and-see sentiment

EV makers including , and Denza have all introduced 90-day price protection policies.

As the auto price war in China continues, some electric vehicle (EV) makers are beginning to make it clear that they will not cut prices in an attempt to dispel the wait-and-see sentiment of potential consumers.

EV makers including Leapmotor, Neta and Denza have all introduced price protection policies, after (NASDAQ: LI) introduced a similar policy and (NYSE: NIO) made it clear that the company would not cut prices.

Leapmotor announced yesterday that for consumers who purchase any of its models during this month, they will get the difference back if the price drops within 90 days or if the company offers additional cash discounts.

This is in line with a policy introduced earlier this week by Li Auto, whose salespeople said it was designed to make clear to consumers that its models would not be reduced in price.

Neta, Hozon Auto's EV brand, announced today that consumers who order its flagship sedan, the Neta S, by April 30 will not have to worry about the model's price dropping within 90 days.

If the price of the model drops within 90 days of the consumer's purchase, Neta will refund the difference.

Notably, along with the announcement of the price protection policy, Neta began offering an RMB 23,000 ($3,340) discount for the lowest-priced model of the Neta S, bringing the model's starting price down to RMB 179,800 from the previous RMB 202,800, valid until the end of April 30.

Neta models on sale also include the Neta V and Neta U, which start at less than RMB 150,000 and are not covered by its price protection policy.

Denza, 's premium brand, announced that if consumers who purchase its vehicles during the month see a drop in official guide prices will receive a rebate for the difference.

Auto and Volvo Car's jointly held Lynk & Co brand also began offering a 90-day price protection policy that expires on April 30.

The increasing number of car companies joining the price war has led to an increased wait-and-see mood among consumers to avoid seeing price cuts soon after purchasing a car.

An NIO executive said yesterday that they noticed Li Auto's move and the company had considered whether to issue a similar policy.

But for NIO, it has previously made it clear that prices will not be lowered, the company's assistant vice president of sales operations Pu Yang said at a media event yesterday, adding that NIO is not only not cutting prices for 90 days, but prices will not change for a longer period of time.

Regulatory filing: NIO ET5 shooting brake coming

management previously hinted that the NIO ET5 shooting brake could begin deliveries in China in July.

The NIO ET5 shooting brake has appeared in a regulatory directory in China, with the model just months away from its official launch.

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) today announced the latest batch of models that will be allowed to be sold in China, and NIO's new ET5 is included.

The public can submit their feedback on the list between March 9 and March 15. Entry into the list is the last major regulatory process before a model is allowed to be sold in China.

The page for the new ET5 shows what the shooting brake variant of the sedan looks like, with the overall style continuing from the ET5 sedan.

The length, width and height of the NIO ET5 shooting brake are 4,790 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,499 mm respectively, and the wheelbase is 2,888 mm, which is the same as the ET5 sedan.

The 001, currently the best-known shooting brake model in China, has a length, width and height of 4,970 mm, 1,999 mm and 1,548 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 3,005 mm.

The NIO ET5 shooting brake is equipped with dual motors produced by NIO's electric drive systems division in Hefei, Anhui province, with a maximum power of 150 kW and 210 kW, respectively, and can support a top speed of 200 km/h.

Like several other NIO models based on the NT 2.0 platform, the NIO ET5 shooting brake supports the option of a retractable electric towing hitch, which can tow up to 1,400 kg of caravan weight.

Battery suppliers for the model include CALB in addition to , as do the new EC6, EC7, new ES8 and new ES6.

NIO's original plan was to begin deliveries of five models in the first half of the year, including the EC7 coupe SUV and the new ES8, which were already launched at NIO Day at the end of last year and were set to begin deliveries in May and June, respectively.

William Li, NIO founder, chairman and CEO, said during an analyst call earlier this month after announcing its fourth-quarter earnings that the company's original plan was to begin deliveries of five new models in the second quarter, but later recognized the need to give each vehicle slightly more time to ensure quality at launch.

"In the second quarter of this year, we will start deliveries of four new models, including the ES6, which is our most important model, as per our latest plan so far," Li said.

NIO will also begin deliveries of the fifth new model of the year in July, which may this a little later than originally planned, he said.

Other than the new ES6, Li did not mention specific models.

What can be expected is that in addition to the EC7, the new ES8 and the new ES6, deliveries of the new EC6 will also begin in the second quarter, and the ET5 shooting brake will probably be the model that the company will start delivering in July.

NIO's new ES8 entered China's regulatory catalog in December last year, EC7 and the new ES6 and both in January this year, EC6 was in February.

The NIO ET5 shooting brake will be launched in Europe in a few months, according to previous comments from the company's management.

NIO will launch a shooting brake version of the ET5, a sister model of the ET5, in June or July of this year, said Qin Lihong, co-founder and president of the electric vehicle maker, at an event in January.

The shooting brake variant of the ET5, which is developed for European consumers, will debut in Europe, Qin said at the time.

Shooting brake models have a large market in Europe, while sales of the sedan are low, which is the opposite of the situation in China, he said.

"Derivatives of sedans are a niche market in China, but the opposite is true in Europe. We don't see many real sedans in Europe," he said.

In the Chinese market, shooting brake models are a niche market.

However, the success of the Zeekr 001, the first model of 's Zeekr brand, has made such models increasingly popular.

For the full year 2022, Zeekr delivered 71,941 Zeekr 001s, reaching its goal of delivering 70,000 vehicles for the year.
