For the week of June 19 to June 25, (NASDAQ: LI) sold 7,500 units, continuing to lead among China's new car-making brands, the company said today on Weibo.

As of June 25, Li Auto has sold 27,300 units this month and is on track to reach its 30,000-unit monthly sales goal, it said.

Li Auto didn't explain what that weekly sales tally was based on, but apparently they are insurance registrations. The company had suspended sharing those numbers in May, but has since resumed sharing them.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) sold 3,200 units last week and 8,000 units from June 1 to June 25, according to figures shared by Li Auto.

Notably, June 22 to June 24 was a three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, and June 25 was a Sunday, but a working day after the holiday.

Nio's weekly sales have continued to grow over the past three weeks, as deliveries of new models began. It was 1,500 units in the week of June 5 to June 11 and 2,000 units in the week of June 12 to June 18.

Deliveries of the new ES6 began on the night of the launch on May 24, and deliveries of the ET5 Touring began on June 16.

In addition to these two new models, Nio will also begin deliveries of the new ES8 on June 28, which was launched on Nio Day 2022 on December 24, 2022.

When Nio reported first-quarter earnings on June 9, it guided for second-quarter deliveries of between 23,000 and 25,000 vehicles, meaning it expects to deliver between 10,187 and 12,187 vehicles in June.

On June 20, Nio signed a share subscription agreement with Abu Dhabi-based investment firm CYVN Holdings, which will invest a total of about $1.1 billion in it.

In the two weeks prior to last week, Tesla sold 16,400 units and 14,500 units respectively in China.

From June 1 to June 25, Tesla was the top-selling premium brand in China, surpassing Mercedes-Benz's 52,100 units and above Audi's 51,600 units, according to a table by Li Auto.

On June 16, Tesla announced that Chinese consumers who purchase and take delivery of an already produced rear-wheel drive version of the Model 3 this month will receive an insurance subsidy of RMB 8,000 ($1,110).

(NYSE: XPEV) sold 2,600 units last week and 6,400 units from June 1 to June 25.

Xpeng began pre-sales of the G6 on June 9 at a price starting at RMB 225,000, significantly lower than the Tesla Model Y's starting price of RMB 263,900 in China.

The Xpeng G6 received more than 25,000 orders within 72 hours of the start of the pre-sale, the company announced on Weibo on June 12.

The G6 show cars were already available at Xpeng stores, and the model will officially go on sale June 29 with deliveries starting in July, the company said earlier this month.

Leapmotor sold 3,100 units last week and 10,600 units from June 1 to June 25.

On June 20, Leapmotor announced that it had reached 200,000 cumulative deliveries since its inception.

Denza sold 2,400 units last week, and 8,300 units from June 1 to June 25.

Denza, which currently has only the Denza D9 MPV on sale, will officially launch the Denza N7 on July 3, its first SUV since the rebranding last year.

The Denza N7 is aimed at the market for traditional internal combustion engine vehicles priced around 400,000 yuan, an executive said earlier.

Seres, Huawei’s auto partner, delivers 1st vehicles in Europe

Seres delivered Seres 5 vehicles to the first European owners in Norway in cooperation with a local dealer.

Seres Group -- one of 's key partners in the automotive sector -- has started vehicle deliveries in Europe.

On June 21, Seres delivered Seres 5 vehicles to the first European owners in Bergen, Norway, according to an announcement made by the company based in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing on June 23.

Unlike (NYSE: NIO), which follows a direct sales model overseas, Seres delivered the first vehicles in Norway in partnership with local dealer Sandven AS.

Sandven will work with Seres to bring more new energy vehicle (NEV) offerings to Norwegian consumers for the European market, said Trond Sandven, the dealership's founder.

The Seres 5 appears to be the Aito M5 sold in China, a model jointly designed by Huawei and Aito, a brand jointly launched by Huawei and Seres.

The Seres Chinese website currently shows only the Aito series of models, including the Aito M5 series and the Aito M7 series.

The four-wheel drive version of the Seres 5 has a total output of 430 kW and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, according to Seres.

The model is available in battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) versions to meet the diverse mobility needs of customers worldwide, Seres said.

(Seres rotating chairman and president Zhang Zhengping delivered the vehicle to the first Seres 5 owner in Norway.)

The Seres 5 BEV has a WLTP range of 500 kilometers for the two-wheel drive version and 530 kilometers for the four-wheel drive flagship version, the company said.

On full fuel and power, the Seres 5 EREV has a combined range of more than 1,000 kilometers, it said.

Seres did not reveal whether the first vehicles it delivered in Europe were the Seres 5 BEV or the Seres 5 EREV, though its announcement features a model with a front face that matches the all-electric version of the Aito M5.

This is the latest development in Seres' efforts to reach overseas markets.

Seres unveiled the Landian brand on March 30 and made its first model, the plug-in hybrid E5, available.

Equipped with technology from Huawei and , the Landian E5 is a mid-size SUV available in 5- and 7-seat versions, with a starting price of RMB 139,900 ($18,490) in China.

On May 25, Landian shipped the first 500 Landian E5 vehicles to overseas markets.

Huawei officially announced on April 20, 2021 that it would start selling cars in its flagship stores, with the first model being the Seres SF5 SUV, which uses extended-range technology. This model is no longer available in China.

On December 2, 2021, Seres and Huawei jointly launched a premium NEV brand called Aito, followed by the M5 EREV, M5 BEV and M7 EREV.

Originally known as Chongqing Sokon Industrial Group, Seres Group changed its name in August 2022, with Seres as one of its brands.

Seres Group sold 8,562 NEVs in May, down 18.08 percent year-on-year but up 23.78 percent from April, according to data released earlier this month.

New patent hints BEV maker Avatr may launch models with combustion engines

The appeal of PHEVs or EREVs is clearly hard for Chinese EV companies to ignore, and the strong deliveries of the further underscore this.

While adding an internal combustion engine to an electric vehicle (EV) model is seen as a step backward, the approach could lead to higher sales and thus make it attractive.

A new patent granted to Avatr Technology, an EV brand backed by , and Changan Automobile, hints that it could potentially add models with internal combustion engines to its product array.

Avatr was granted a patent related to refueling ports on May 5, meaning that the battery electric vehicle (BEV) maker could potentially introduce models that can refuel in the future.

Avatr was originally founded as Changan by Changan and NIO on July 10, 2018.

However, its product launches have not progressed well over the past several years, and with the introduction of new financing, NIO has essentially exited from the joint venture.

After several years of bumpy development, Avatr finally launched its first model, Avatr 11, on August 9, 2022, and its deliveries began at the end of December last year.

In addition to the Avatr 11, Avatr also has a limited-edition model, the Avatr 011, for which deliveries began in February of this year.

In May, Avatr sold 1,200 units, according to local consulting firm Land Roads.

Most of China's earliest EV startups targeted the BEV market in the beginning, but experience over the past few years has shown that plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), which enjoy the same support policies as BEVs at the national level, are more popular.

In addition, Li Auto's (NASDAQ: LI) tremendous success in the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) market is more evidence that PHEVs are more accepted.

Li Auto delivered a record 28,277 vehicles in May, the third consecutive month to surpass the 20,000-unit mark. It is aiming to deliver more than 30,000 units this month.

In an effort to reverse the sales slump, Leapmotor announced plans last year to release EREV models, all of its previous models were BEVs.

On February 1, Leapmotor unveiled its dual-power strategy and its first EREV model, an EREV variant of its flagship SUV, the C11. On March 1, the C11 EREV went on sale.

In May, Leapmotor delivered 12,058 vehicles, up 38.18 percent from 8,726 units in April and 10 times the 1,139 units in January.

The appeal of PHEVs or EREVs is clearly hard to ignore for Chinese EV makers.

He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of , said in a speech on June 15 that he could foresee a large number of hybrid models appearing in China in the next two years, especially inside family cars.

"Because everyone sees the success, they will follow. Because they are following, a large number of models will focus on the same place. It's a very interesting thing," he said.

He stressed, however, that car companies should have a long-term view. "I think in the automotive space, for everything, you have to think about the layout for ten to twenty years, it's not possible to achieve a big change in three years' time," he said.

Huawei-backed AITO to launch flagship SUV M9 in Q4

The AITO M9 will be built on a new 800 V high-voltage platform, on which will place its new technologies in the cockpit and smart driving areas, according to Richard Yu.

AITO, the car brand backed by Chinese tech giant Huawei, will launch its flagship SUV, the M9, later this year, which will be its third model after the M5 and M7.

The AITO M9 will hit the market in the fourth quarter and will go beyond expectations in terms of luxury, comfort, quietness and intelligence, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's intelligent vehicle solutions business, said in a speech at an automotive industry conference in Shenzhen today.

"We have confidence that the M9 will be the most luxurious, highest-end and smartest car in the entire market," he claimed.

The AITO M9 will be built on a new 800 V high-voltage platform on which Huawei will place its new technologies in the cockpit and smart driving areas, according to Yu.

The model will be available in both an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version and a battery electric vehicle (BEV) version, he said.

The AITO M5 is currently available in both EREV and BEV versions, while the M7 is only available in an EREV version.

The M9 will be a mobile smart home, office, and mobile smart bedroom, he said, adding that Huawei has very new technologies and experiences to bring to consumers.

AITO is the premium car brand that Huawei and Seres launched on December 2, 2021. It announced the AITO M5 on December 23, 2021, and the AITO M7 on July 4, 2022.

Deliveries of the AITO M5 begin in March 2022 and the first deliveries of the AITO M7 took place on August 24, 2022.

The M5 currently has a starting price range of RMB 259,800 ($36,530) to RMB 331,800 and the M7 is RMB 289,800 to RMB 379,800.

The brand saw strong deliveries in the second half of last year, but this year has been weak.

AITO delivered 5,629 vehicles in May, up 22.77 percent from April. From January to May, it delivered 21,873 vehicles.

In his speech today, Yu gave his view of the Chinese auto industry, saying that competition will become more intense and there will be a big reshuffle in the future.

The southern Chinese city of Shenzhen will host an auto show starting this Friday, with Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and new Chinese carmakers including NIO (NYSE: NIO) participating.

The 2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Auto Show (Auto Shenzhen 2023) will be held at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center starting June 16, where Tesla is one of the main exhibitors, according to information released today by the show's organizers.

This will be Tesla's first participation in an auto show in China since the Shanghai auto show in April 2021.

On April 19, 2021, on the first day of the last Shanghai auto show, a female owner got on the roof of a car at the Tesla booth and accused Tesla of brake failure. As of today, the dispute is still ongoing.

Since the drama, Tesla has not participated in any more auto shows in China, including the 2023 Shanghai auto show two months ago.

June 16 is the media day for the upcoming show, and general admission will be available from June 17 to June 24.

Tesla's booth is located in Hall 9 on the 1st floor, next to 's (NYSE: XPEV) booth. The booths of -backed AITO, Smart, Leapmotor, Rising Auto, and Voyah are also in the area.

NIO will also be at the show and will be showcasing the ET5 Touring, according to the event's organizers.

The day before that show starts, NIO will launch the ET5 Touring in China on June 15, with its launch event starting at 19:00 Beijing time. The company will also launch the ET5 Touring and the new ES6 in Europe a few hours later on the same day.

NIO's booth at the Shenzhen auto show is in Hall 3, near the booths of Bentley and Lotus. The company will hold a press conference at the show on June 16 from 10:00 to 10:30.

The last show, Auto Shenzhen 2022, started on May 28, 2022 and ran through June 5. It was the first auto show in China last year.

NIO's booth at Auto Shenzhen last year was also in Hall 3, a two-floor area where the first floor displayed the full range of models, a transparent second-generation battery swap station and NIO Power's products. The second floor includes a relaxation area, NIO Cafe, and Joy Camp.

In addition to Tesla, NIO and XPeng, new energy vehicle (NEV) makers including (OTCMKTS: BYDDY), (NASDAQ: LI) and will also participate in Auto Shenzhen 2023.

NIO denies after rumors of partnership with Mercedes-Benz swirl

A fake rumor yesterday claimed that Mercedes-Benz will use 's battery swap network and will build its next-generation models based on NIO's standards.

Rumors about a partnership between NIO (NYSE: NIO) and German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz were widely circulated on Chinese social media networks yesterday. But this was later denied.

One of the most widely circulated was an image with text claiming that Mercedes-Benz would use NIO's battery swap network and would build next-generation battery swap-enabled models based on NIO's standards.

In the comments section of a Weibo user's post sharing the image, NIO's legal department left a message later yesterday saying the image was a forgery.

Ma Lin, NIO's senior director of corporate communications, later retweeted the message. As of press time, the Weibo post has been deleted.

CnEVPost saw the image yesterday in several WeChat groups, as well as a chat transcript claiming that NIO had entered into a partnership with Mercedes-Benz.

The image mimics the style of the NIO App page and the company's statement, but the publisher of the false statement does not exist among NIO App users.

These false rumors appear at an interesting point in time, making it particularly noticeable.

On June 12, NIO announced an immediate RMB 30,000 ($4,200) reduction in the starting prices of all new models, but the previously free monthly battery swap service became a paid option.

On the same evening, NIO held a communication meeting with its customers and broadcasted the meeting live on its social media platforms.

William Li, NIO's founder, chairman and CEO, said in response to a question during the communication that several companies are now talking to NIO about using its battery swap network, according to the live stream watched by CnEVPost.

However, they will need to develop vehicles to NIO's battery swap standard, which takes time, Li said.

It's worth noting that these statements are not materially different from previous comments made by NIO management, which Li also said at the communication that they were diplomatic.

Li last mentioned similar remarks two months ago, when he said in an April 1 media group interview during the China EV 100 Forum that NIO wants other companies to share and build battery swap infrastructure with it.

"I met with several company executives today and they asked me how we could work together, and we're open to that," he said on April 1.

NIO refers to its battery swap model as battery as a service (BaaS), an innovation that can be understood through the lens of cloud services, Li said at the time.

The cloud services around the world, whether they are offered by Microsoft, Google and Amazon in the US or Alibaba, Tencent and in China, they all have one thing in common -- the companies themselves are the primary users, he said.

Despite frequent rumors over the past two years, as of yet no other car company has said it will use NIO's battery swap network.

In addition to the NIO brand, another brand that will use these battery swap stations will be the company's sub-brand, codenamed ALPS, which is expected to start delivering vehicles next year.

NIO's current plants can support the production of vehicles under both NIO and ALPS brands, and no major Capex investment is required, Li said in a June 9 analyst call following the announcement of first-quarter earnings.

Current battery swap stations are sufficient for both brands to share, he said.

Denza to begin delivery of N7 SUV in July, offers 2 front design options

Denza, which currently has only the Denza D9 MPV on sale, delivered 10,526 units in April, the second consecutive month with more than 10,000 units.  |  BYDDY.US | HK

Denza, the premium new energy vehicle (NEV) brand of BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY), has announced the launch schedule for the upcoming Denza N7, after pre-sales of the new SUV began last month.

The Denza N7 will be officially launched in late June, with deliveries starting in July, Zhao Changjiang, general manager of Denza's sales division, said yesterday at the company's first brand day after it was effectively controlled by BYD.

Denza is a joint venture established by BYD and Daimler in February 2011, with each holding a 50 percent stake at the time. In February 2022, the Daimler brand was rebranded as Mercedes-Benz.

BYD's stake in Denza increased to 90 percent last year, and Mercedes-Benz's stake decreased to 10 percent.

In August 2022, Denza let the D9 MPV go on sale, the brand's first model after the reorganization. The Denza D9 began deliveries at the end of October last year and 10,526 units were delivered in April this year, the second consecutive month with more than 10,000 units.

The Denza N7, the second model after the Denza equity change, is a 5-seat midsize SUV with a length, width and height of 4,860 mm, 1,935 mm and 1,602 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,940 mm.

The model will have two front design options, differing in the daytime running lights below the headlights, one with a bar and the other with a grille, Zhao said at yesterday's event.

The N7 will be delivered with smart driving hardware and the advanced assisted driving software will be available starting in December, Zhao said.

The Denza N7 has its own operating system and is compatible with different systems, 's HarmonyOS being one of them.

Denza D9 consumers are in their 30s and 40s, and 30 percent of them ordered the Denza N7, Zhao said.

Data from more than 10,000 orders show that Denza N7 consumers are over 23 years old, younger than those for the D9, he said.

Denza opened reservations for the N7 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, but its pricing information was not released.

Zhao said on Weibo last December 20 that the SUV aims to capture the market for traditional internal combustion engine cars priced around 400,000 yuan ($56,300).

On April 25, Denza said the N7 received 10,569 pre-orders, just seven days after pre-sales bean.

In addition to the N7, Denza has also unveiled the exterior and interior design of another SUV, the Denza N8.

Landian, the new energy vehicle (NEV) sub-brand of the Seres Group, began exporting vehicles, even though the new brand was officially launched only two months ago.

On May 25, Landian shipped the first 500 units of its midsize hybrid SUV Landian E5 to overseas markets, according to a press release from the brand on Sunday.

The vehicles will arrive in two weeks in markets along the "Belt and Road", Landian said.

Seres -- a key automotive partner of Chinese tech giant Huawei -- officially launched the Landian brand on March 30 and made its first model, the plug-in hybrid E5, available.

Equipped with technology from Huawei and BYD, the Landian E5 is a mid-size SUV available in 5- and 7-seat versions with a starting price of RMB 139,900 ($18,940).

The model uses the F31A 1.5L PHEV-specific engine and DHT300 electric hybrid system from BYD's FinDreams Power.

The Landian E5 also comes with Huawei's HiCar 3.0 system, a lite version of HarmonyOS for cars, but supports features including seamless connectivity with cell phones.

The Landian E5 drew strong interest from dealer partners during online presentations with overseas dealers, Landian said yesterday.

Landian literally means blue electricity in Chinese, and the brand is positioned as a builder of the Internet of Everything ecosystem in the "E era," where the letter E refers to Electric, according to Seres.

In 2023, the Landian brand will build 340 experience stores and 160 delivery centers, Seres previously said.

Seres Group sold 6,917 NEVs in April, down 19.12 percent year-on-year and 18.73 percent from March, according to data it released earlier this month.

That includes 2,953 vehicles for the Seres brand, according to the group, which did not release NEV sales for its other brands.

VW denies talks with Huawei on auto software licensing in China

There have been no discussions between Volkswagen China and other companies about operating system licensing, local media quoted the German carmaker as saying.

Volkswagen China denied it was in talks to use software in its cars in China, after a report yesterday sparked widespread discussion.

There have been no discussions between Volkswagen China and other companies about operating system licensing, local media Economic View cited the German automaker as saying today.

To provide the greatest possible convenience to customers, Volkswagen is continuing to push further into the development of existing software, the automaker said.

The Financial Times said in a report yesterday that Volkswagen has been in talks to use Huawei software in its cars in China, hoping to boost its efforts to gain a bigger share of the country's electric vehicle market.

Three people familiar with the situation said Volkswagen has talked with Huawei about using the latter's technology in its cars, while another person said the German carmaker has held similar talks with other Chinese groups, according to the Financial Times report.

Volkswagen's software is seen as lagging behind some local players in China, but it is one of the most aggressive of foreign car companies seeking change.

In late 2021, there were rumors that Huawei and Volkswagen Group were planning to form a joint venture to develop self-driving technology. But this was never confirmed.

Last October 13, Horizon Robotics, one of the leading providers of computing solutions for smart vehicles in China, announced that Cariad, Volkswagen's software subsidiary, would form a joint venture with it to accelerate efforts to develop smart driving technology locally.

Volkswagen plans to invest about 2.4 billion euros for a 60 percent stake in the joint venture, which is expected to close in the first half of 2023, according to a statement from Horizon Robotics.

Last October 24, local media outlet 36kr reported that Su Jing, a former Huawei executive and self-driving industry veteran, would join the joint venture, possibly as head of one of the technologies.

Shanghai auto show: EVs take center stage, nearly 40 models equipped with LiDARs

There are 38 models equipped with LiDARs, of which BYD-backed RoboSense is the biggest winner, being the supplier of 18 of them.

At the Shanghai auto show two years ago, 's P5 sedan attracted a lot of attention as the world's first LiDAR-equipped production car at the time.

Now, at the latest Shanghai auto show, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) powered by LiDARs has reached dozens, as local EV makers have adopted the component over the past two years to help make vehicles more capable of assisted driving.

The ongoing Shanghai auto show began on April 18 and will run through April 27. EVs are certainly the focus of attention, with traditional fuel vehicles having fallen out of favor, a drastic change from two years ago.

More than 1,500 vehicles are on display at this year's edition of the show, with more than 150 of them making their debut, according to figures released by the event's organizers.

About two-thirds of those debuts were NEVs, including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Dozens of the NEVs at the show use the same new technology -- LiDARs -- despite the vehicles coming from different brands and having different designs.

Of all the models on display at the Shanghai auto show, 38 were equipped with LiDARs, with BYD-backed RoboSense, founded in 2014, being the biggest winner and the supplier for 18 of them.

Among BYD's models, the high-end Yangwang U8 off-road SUV and Denza N7 SUV are equipped with RoboSense's M Series LiDARs.

XPeng G6, which debuted at the Shanghai auto show, and the company's two flagship models, the P7i sedan and the G9 SUV, are also equipped with RoboSense's M Series LiDARs.

On April 14, 2021, XPeng unveiled the P5, the world's first LiDAR-equipped production car, on the eve of the last Shanghai auto show.

Notably, the P5 used LiDAR provided by Livox, incubated by drone maker DJI. However, XPeng switched to RoboSense's LiDARs for all subsequent models.

AITO, the EV brand jointly created by and Seres Group, also uses RoboSense's M Series LiDAR in the M5 SUV. Among other high-profile models, the Lotus Eletre, GAC Aion Hyper GT, Arcfox α-S with " Huawei Inside" are also equipped with RoboSense's LiDARs.

In addition to RoboSense, Innovusion and Hesai are the other two major players.

Among the vehicles on display at the Shanghai auto show, six NIO models -- the new ES8, ES7, new ES6, EC7, ET7 and ET5 -- are equipped with Innovusion's Falcon LiDARs.

Innovusion had a booth at the show and used an ET7 as a vehicle to showcase its product.

(NASDAQ: LI) currently has three models on sale -- Li L7, Li L8 and Li L9 -- all equipped with Hesai's AT128 LiDARs. HiPhi's HiPhi Z and HiPhi Y are also equipped with the component from Hesai.

For smart driving, vehicles need to detect their surroundings, and a single type of sensor often encounters scenarios that are not covered by its capabilities, a RoboSense source told CnEVPost.

The addition of LiDAR makes up for the weaknesses of other sensors, thus making the perception system capability more comprehensive and the smart driving decisions safer and more reasonable, the source said.
