Tesla announced today that it is opening its Supercharger network in the Chinese mainland on a pilot basis to other brands of electric vehicles (EVs), following its practice in more than 10 other markets.

The EV maker is initially opening 10 Supercharger stations for 37 non-Tesla models, according to an announcement it posted on WeChat.

Notably, the pilot is currently limited to Beijing and Shanghai, with each city offering five Supercharger stations to participate in the pilot.

The 37 non-Tesla models include the NIO ES6, NIO EC6, P7, Li ONE, 001, BYD Han EV, BYD Tang EV, and Polestar 2.

In addition to the Supercharger stations, Tesla has opened 120 destination charging stations on a pilot basis, covering 25 provinces and cities in the Chinese mainland.

To date, Tesla has more than 1,600 Supercharger stations in the Chinese mainland, offering more than 10,000 Superchargers, according to the announcement.

It also has more than 700 destination charging stations in the Chinese mainland, offering more than 2,000 charging piles.

At the end of 2021, Tesla opened its charging network to non-Tesla vehicles on a pilot basis in Europe, and the service is now available to owners in more than 10 countries and regions worldwide, the company said.

Now, owners of non-Tesla-branded EVs in the Chinese mainland can also enjoy an efficient, convenient and dense Tesla charging network, it said.

Tesla hopes its open and innovative business logic will bring together more industry partners to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, it added.

Shanghai auto show: Takeaways from Deutsche Bank

Edison Yu's team shares their key takeaways on new model pricing, design, ADAS, and ultra-fast charging.

As one of the most important auto shows in several years, the ongoing Shanghai auto show is attracting a lot of interest. In a research note sent to investors today, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team shares their thoughts on the event.

This year's Shanghai auto show began last week, with media days on April 18-19, professional visitor days on April 20-21, and general public access on April 22 - 27.

Yu's team shared their four key takeaways regarding new model pricing, local design, Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) capabilities, and ultra-fast charging.

"Pricing to be competitive at least through early 2024 With the price war raging on, we continue to expect OEMs to be aggressive as market share is the #1 priority," the team wrote.

Although no significant price cuts were announced at the show, automakers were very careful in disclosing prices.

did not reveal pricing details for the G6 other than the previous range of 200,000 to 300,000 yuan. Likewise, NIO did not detail the price of the new ES6, the team noted.

If demand stays low, there could be another wave of price cuts, so the automakers do not want to overprice their new models. In addition, lithium carbonate prices have fallen sharply, providing more cushion for pure electric vehicles, Yu's team said.

The team expects G6 pricing to trend toward the lower end of the range previously mentioned by XPeng, especially given that the X starts at just 190,000 yuan and the Model Y could see one more price cut this year.

To offset the drop in average selling price, automakers are taking steps to squeeze the structural costs of new platforms, such as XPeng's SEPA 2.0 platform, according to the team.

In terms of product design, the quality of local models is improving rapidly, and several local automakers began turning to foreign talent a few years ago to speed up the process, the team said.

BYD's design chief is Wolfang Egger, previously at Audi, and NIO's vice president of design is Kris Tomasson who came over from BMW, the team noted.

The team highlighted two models that really showcase this shift: the BYD Song L and the Hozon GT Speedster.

"There are many other examples of bold and sleek design at the show and we expect this to be the new norm as the market shifts from ICE to EV," the team wrote.

With design and cost advantages, a natural extension is to export. During the show, Zeekr provided more details about its European strategy, the team noted.

On the ADAS side, Yu's team said subscriptions have proven difficult to monetize.

"We would have thought selling an ADAS subscription service could be easy next step. However, consumers are reluctant to adopt this business model," the team wrote.

XPeng is trying to dramatically reduce the cost of its XNGP system while improving its performance.

is currently beta testing the City NOA software with a goal of rolling it out to 100 cities nationwide by the end of 2023. The company believes its AD Max 3.0 system will be able to operate without HD maps and guarantees that all upgrades will be free for life with no subscription fees, the team noted.

NIO's NOP+ beta program is expected to end at the end of June and then begin charging subscribers RMB 380 per month.

"NIO is offering 2 years for free to 2023 ET7 buyers who pay the order deposit before June and we would expect this subscription to be increasingly used a promotional bundle to boost sales," the team wrote.

In terms of ultra-fast charging facilities, Yu's team said that automakers are just beginning to build up such capabilities, and real-world charging requires synchronization of the car, charger and grid. If any part becomes a bottleneck, charging speeds will not reach maximum performance.

NIO's ultra-fast 500 kW charger is now in service and open to other brands.

XPeng is rapidly rolling out its new S4 480 kW DC ultra-fast charging station, with a target of 500 this year.

Li Auto is focused on 800V solutions and expects its upcoming battery electric vehicle (BEV)to have 400 km of range in 10 minutes, the team noted.

Li Auto announced on April 18 that its first all-electric model will be the world's first to feature 's 4C Qilin Battery.

By 2025, Li Auto's product array will include a super flagship model, five extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and five BEVs, the company said.

Shanghai auto show: EVs take center stage, nearly 40 models equipped with LiDARs

There are 38 models equipped with LiDARs, of which BYD-backed RoboSense is the biggest winner, being the supplier of 18 of them.

At the Shanghai auto show two years ago, 's P5 sedan attracted a lot of attention as the world's first LiDAR-equipped production car at the time.

Now, at the latest Shanghai auto show, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) powered by LiDARs has reached dozens, as local EV makers have adopted the component over the past two years to help make vehicles more capable of assisted driving.

The ongoing Shanghai auto show began on April 18 and will run through April 27. EVs are certainly the focus of attention, with traditional fuel vehicles having fallen out of favor, a drastic change from two years ago.

More than 1,500 vehicles are on display at this year's edition of the show, with more than 150 of them making their debut, according to figures released by the event's organizers.

About two-thirds of those debuts were NEVs, including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Dozens of the NEVs at the show use the same new technology -- LiDARs -- despite the vehicles coming from different brands and having different designs.

Of all the models on display at the Shanghai auto show, 38 were equipped with LiDARs, with BYD-backed RoboSense, founded in 2014, being the biggest winner and the supplier for 18 of them.

Among BYD's models, the high-end Yangwang U8 off-road SUV and Denza N7 SUV are equipped with RoboSense's M Series LiDARs.

XPeng G6, which debuted at the Shanghai auto show, and the company's two flagship models, the P7i sedan and the G9 SUV, are also equipped with RoboSense's M Series LiDARs.

On April 14, 2021, XPeng unveiled the P5, the world's first LiDAR-equipped production car, on the eve of the last Shanghai auto show.

Notably, the P5 used LiDAR provided by Livox, incubated by drone maker DJI. However, XPeng switched to RoboSense's LiDARs for all subsequent models.

AITO, the EV brand jointly created by and Seres Group, also uses RoboSense's M Series LiDAR in the M5 SUV. Among other high-profile models, the Lotus Eletre, GAC Aion Hyper GT, Arcfox α-S with " Huawei Inside" are also equipped with RoboSense's LiDARs.

In addition to RoboSense, Innovusion and Hesai are the other two major players.

Among the vehicles on display at the Shanghai auto show, six NIO models -- the new ES8, ES7, new ES6, EC7, ET7 and ET5 -- are equipped with Innovusion's Falcon LiDARs.

Innovusion had a booth at the show and used an ET7 as a vehicle to showcase its product.

(NASDAQ: LI) currently has three models on sale -- Li L7, Li L8 and Li L9 -- all equipped with Hesai's AT128 LiDARs. HiPhi's HiPhi Z and HiPhi Y are also equipped with the component from Hesai.

For smart driving, vehicles need to detect their surroundings, and a single type of sensor often encounters scenarios that are not covered by its capabilities, a RoboSense source told CnEVPost.

The addition of LiDAR makes up for the weaknesses of other sensors, thus making the perception system capability more comprehensive and the smart driving decisions safer and more reasonable, the source said.

China Deliveries Electric eMobility eV EV Data Insurance Registrations Li Auto Neta Nio Tesla Weekly Data XPeng

Insurance registrations for week ending Apr 16: Tesla 12,500, Li Auto 6,300, NIO 700

NIO's weak performance may be because it is on the eve of multiple product switches, as it will begin deliveries of the new ET7, new ES6, EC7 in May and will begin deliveries of the new ES8 in June.

(NASDAQ: TSLA) and (NASDAQ: LI) kept sales strong last week, while NIO (NYSE: NIO) was weak, the latest data show.

Li Auto sold 6,300 units in the week of April 10 to April 16, far outpacing China's other new car-making brands, the automaker said in an April 19 post to its WeChat account.

Li Auto didn't say what the sales figure was based on, but it was apparently insurance registrations. Previously, we had access to the data every Tuesday, and Li Auto's practice was to share some of it on Wednesdays.

The main source that provides data on auto insurance registrations in China stopped sharing that data this month, but Li Auto continues to share some of it.

Tesla sold 12,500 units last week, according to the data table shared by Li Auto. Tesla's sales in the previous week were 6,973, according to data previously shared by Li Auto.

NIO sold about 700 units last week, according to the data. The electric vehicle maker sold 1,316 units in the previous week.

NIO's weak performance may be because it is on the eve of multiple product switches. It launched the new ET7 and unveiled the new ES6 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, with deliveries both set to begin in May.

In addition to the new ET7 and the new ES6, NIO will also start delivering the EC7 coupe SUV in May and will start delivering the new ES8 in June, according to plans it previously annouced.

sold 1,300 units last week, up from 904 units the week before, according to data shared by Li Auto. XPeng unveiled the new SUV G6 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, but pricing information is unknown.

sold 1,600 units last week, up from 1,476 the week before. Leapmotor sold 1,700 units last week, up from 1,157 the week before. Neta sold 1,800 units last week, up from 1,526 the week before.

Among premium brands, BMW sold 14,500 cars last week including internal combustion engine vehicles as well as NEVs, Mercedes-Benz 13,400 and Audi 12,600, according to data shared by Li Auto.

Separately, retail sales of NEVs in China from April 1-16 were 223,000 units, up 89 percent year-on-year and up 13 percent from the same period last month, according to data released yesterday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Considering that NEV retail sales were 91,000 from April 1 to April 9, this means that during the week of April 10 to April 16, NEV retail sales in China were 132,000 units, up 45 percent from the previous week.

From April 10-16, retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 335,328 units, up 80 percent year-on-year and up 23 percent from the same period last month, according to the CPCA.

Shanghai auto show: Deutsche Bank’s preview

While auto shows have generally started to lose some significance as automakers turn to dedicated launch events, this year's Shanghai auto show could be an exception, said Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team.

(A file photo taken by CnEVPost at the Shanghai auto show two years ago shows an ET7 wrapped in a blanket.)

The Shanghai auto show will begin in less than 10 hours, and it will be interesting to know what analysts expect from the event.

"While auto shows have generally started to lose some significance as OEMs shifted to dedicated launch events, this year's Shanghai Auto Show (starts officially tomorrow) could be an exception," Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team said in a research note sent to investors today.

Most notably, this will be the first auto show since Covid reopened, bringing together many executives and industry observers from overseas for the first time in years, the team said.

Product cycles for electric vehicles are significantly faster compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, as automakers struggle to maintain customer attention and loyalty, meaning many of the vehicles unveiled at the show will begin delivery in short order, the team noted.

NIO (NYSE: NIO), (NYSE: XPEV) and (NASDAQ: LI) all have new announcements coming this week, with NIO set to officially unveil its new ES6, historically its best-selling SUV, Yu's team wrote.

NIO's sales have been sluggish in recent months due to customer expectations of a platform changeover, so the new ES6 will be a very important product, with deliveries likely to begin in June, the team said.

In addition to the new ES6, NIO will also unveil the new ET7 at the Shanghai auto show, the flagship sedan whose sales in the past few months have been well below its performance in the second half of last year.

The updated version of the NIO ET7 will feature some improvements to its interior and deliveries are expected to begin in a few months, Yu's team said.

For XPeng, it will unveil its G6 SUV at the show, which Yu's team believes is the most important model for the company's ambition to reignite volume growth.

"Pricing details will likely not be finalized though as management gauges the initial consumer response. Deliveries are set to begin in June," the team wrote.

Li Auto will launch its dual-energy strategy by unveiling its all-electric solution tomorrow.

The company's first BEV will be a premium MPV and production is expected to begin by the end of this year, Yu's team noted.

Li Auto management recently said it plans to spend RMB 10 billion yuan to build 3,000 supercharging stations by 2025, and further details of this roadmap are to be expected, the team said.

In addition to these three Chinese upstarts, traditional Chinese OEMs have been very active over the past year, the team said.

So far, GAC and have been the most consistent in terms of volume, according to the team.

Zeekr plans to bring the recently launched Zeekr X compact SUV to Europe along with the Zeekr 001 shooting brake model, and more details on the European strategy will be provided this week.

Also, BYD has been quite active, showing off its new Yangwang U9 electric supercar with the new DiSus-X body control system last week.

This week, BYD will unveil the Song L BEV and also begin taking pre-orders for the U8, a premium off-road SUV.

" The company is clearly trying to move upmarket by establishing bold 'halo' vehicles for its new brand," Yu's team wrote.

BYD also announced that the Dolphin and Seal BEVs will be available in Europe later this year. Both models will be smaller and cheaper and should compete more effectively in the low end of mass market, the team said.

In addition to local Chinese carmakers, global OEMs are also showing off new products, and upcoming new models will include the Polestar 4, Smart #3, Lexus LM and Maybach SUV BEV, the team noted.

Hesai unveils ultra-thin LiDAR ET25 that can be placed behind windshield

The Hesai ET25 is an in-cockpit LiDAR designed to be placed behind the front windshield, with the help of Fuyao's special windshield to solve the signal attenuation problem.  |  Hesai US

Some have complained that roof-mounted LiDARs have ruined the design aesthetic of (NYSE: ) and (NASDAQ: LI) vehicles.

Now, a new product from a local LiDAR maker promises to make future vehicles with LiDAR on the roof without design compromises.

Hesai (NASDAQ: HSAI) today officially unveiled its new LiDAR, called ET25, which it says is an in-cockpit LiDAR designed to be placed behind the front windshield.

The ET25 is an ultra-thin, long-range LiDAR, with "ET" standing for Extremely Thin and "25" referring to its height of only 25 mm.

The LiDAR will be mounted behind the windshield, which allows for a smoother body design without compromising wind resistance, according to Hesai.

At the same time, the design allows the device to clear the view when it is covered with dust, rain or fog with the help of the vehicle's wipers alone, the company said.

Unlike (NASDAQ: TSLA), which relies on pure vision solutions for its autonomous driving technology, local Chinese car companies prefer to get better environmental awareness by equipping their vehicles with LiDARs.

Among the common solutions available today, NIO and Li Auto both put LiDARs on the roof of the vehicle, but at the expense of aesthetics to some extent. NIO's LiDAR supplier is Innovusion backed by NIO Capital, and Li Auto's supplier is Hesai.

, on the other hand, mounts LiDARs near the headlights, such as the G9 and P7i, and the P5, but some are concerned that this location is vulnerable to damage. The LiDAR supplier for the G9 and P7i is RoboSense.

It is worth noting that Hesai's latest solution may raise concerns about the attenuation of LiDAR-emitted signals when they are blocked by glass.

Conventional automotive glass causes severe signal attenuation of the near-infrared laser emitted by LiDAR when it encounters glass, which does not meet the need for range and resolution, said Hesai.

In addition, how to effectively integrate LiDAR with other devices mounted behind the windshield, such as cameras and rain sensors, is also a great challenge when installing the device into the cockpit, it said.

To address these challenges, Hesai announced a strategic partnership with automotive glass giant Fuyao to advance the adoption of this new LiDAR while unveiling the ET25.

Fuyao's specially made front windshield solves the challenge of signal attenuation in the cockpit caused by ordinary glass when LiDAR is running, Hesai said.

The use of this specially treated glass in the KOZ (Keep Out Zone) area of the LiDAR allows the ET25 to perform without compromise, according to Hesai.

At just 25 mm thick, the ET25 is nearly half as thin as the Hesai AT128, but instead of sacrificing performance, it is more powerful, the company said.

It has a FOV of 120° (H) x 25° (V) and can detect up to 250 meters without a windshield and up to 225 meters behind a windshield, according to Hesai.

With a point frequency of more than 3 million per second and a minimum resolution of just 0.05° x 0.05°, the ET25 brings ultra-high-definition, long-range 3D perception to smart cars, it said.

The ET25 uses Hesai's in-house developed laser transceiver chip to make the receiver chip several times more sensitive, it said, adding that the product can increase the ranging capability of a 905 nm LiDAR to more than 250 m for objects with 10 percent reflectivity.

With only 12 W of power, the LiDAR has excellent thermal performance and can operate continuously in the cockpit for long periods of time, maintaining high performance even on hot summer days, it said.

The ET25 operates at less than 25 decibels in the cockpit, which is lower than the noise level in a quiet library, meeting the NVH requirements in the cockpit of a luxury electric vehicle brand, Hesai said.

Founded in Shanghai in late 2014, Hesai initially focused on developing high-performance laser sensors and has been exploring driverless LiDAR products since 2016.

On February 9, the company completed its NASDAQ debut, becoming the first Chinese LiDAR manufacturing company to list in the US.

Huawei will reportedly partner with 's vehicle OEM JAC Motors to target a market priced up to RMB 1 million ($146,000), after the tech giant partnered with Seres Group to target the mainstream premium market.

Huawei and JAC will jointly build models targeting the ultra-high-end luxury pure electric vehicle market, with a price range of around RMB 800,000-1 million, local media outlet 36kr reported today.

In the electric car era, JAC's better-known identity is as an OEM for NIO. However, in its partnership with NIO, JAC only provides the factory and vehicle building qualifications, and is not involved in vehicle development or manufacturing, the report noted.

In its partnership with Huawei, JAC intends to learn from the tech giant's engineering development system, thus opening up a more flexible cooperation space to it, according to the report.

Huawei will be involved in the development of the project's vehicles, electrical and electronic architecture, and core systems, the JAC is very enthusiastic in the cooperation, the report said, citing a source familiar with the matter.

"JAC is already learning from Huawei's management model, and even the vehicle development is following the IPD process," the person familiar with the matter said.

The site of the Huawei-JAC car-making project is located in the JAC Xingang Industrial Park in Feixi county, Hefei, Anhui province, with a total investment of about 2.6 billion yuan and is expected to be completed early next year, according to a previous tender document..

After the project is completed, it can produce B to D+ class vehicles, including Sedan, SUV, MPV, Crossover and Sporty models, with an annual capacity of 300,000 units, according to the document.

In the automotive industry, Huawei's most important current partner is Seres Group, which was previously known as Chongqing Sokon.

Huawei officially announced on April 20, 2021 that it will start selling cars in its flagship stores, with the first model being the Seres SF5 SUV, which uses extended-range technology similar to that used in the models.

On December 2, 2021, Seres and Huawei jointly launched a premium new energy vehicle (NEV) brand called AITO, followed by the M5 EREV (extended-range electric vehicle), M5 BEV (battery electric vehicle) and M7 EREV.

On November 7 last year, a Huawei executive said the company aims to make AITO a global premium smart electric vehicle brand within three years.

On February 25, Seres and Huawei signed an agreement to deepen their joint business, and the two will jointly launch a new vehicle platform, the first flagship model of which is scheduled for release in 2023.

Seres unveiled aggressive plans at the time, saying the joint business aims to see annual production and sales of both NEVs reach 1 million units by 2026.

Li Auto to unveil all-electric solution on Apr 18

will let two technology lines develop in parallel, including optimizing the range extender for greater efficiency and making pure electric vehicle technology better, its CEO said last month.  Li Auto US | Li Auto HK

Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) is making the transition to pure electric vehicles, and that day may come sooner than many expected.

On April 18, the first day of the Shanghai auto show, Li Auto's all-electric solution will be officially unveiled with the launch of a "dual-energy strategy," the new energy vehicle (NEV) maker announced on its social media platforms late last night.

The upcoming biennial Shanghai auto show will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center from April 18-27, with press days from April 18-19 and professional visitor days from April 20-21, while the general public can enter from April 22-27.

Li Auto did not provide any additional information on its all-electric solution, saying only that those interested can visit its booth #6A04 in Hall 6.1 during the Shanghai auto show to learn more.

"We'll be waiting for you at the Shanghai auto show from April 18-April 27, 2023," Li Auto said.

Here's a map of its booth location at the Shanghai auto show, as announced by Li Auto.

Li Auto's current vehicles on sale -- Li L7, Li L8 and Li L9 -- are all extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) with an electric range of around 200 kilometers and can be refueled.

In terms of product form, SUVs with extended-range technology are a more appropriate choice, and Li Auto's future pure electric models will bring products that are completely different from any other form currently on the market and will not impact existing products, Li Xiang, founder, chairman and CEO of Li Auto, said on Weibo last June.

For pure electric models, Li Auto will launch a product similar to the L series to meet demand in the RMB 200,000 ($2,9100) - $500,000 price range, the company's management said in a call with analysts on February 27 after announcing its fourth-quarter earnings.

Infrastructure is critical for future all-electric models, and users will need a charging experience close to that of a fuel car. Li Auto will use 800 V technology and has built its own silicon carbide module factory, its management said.

Real-world measurements show that Li Auto's products can save about 15 percent of battery capacity compared to mainstream 400 V, IGBT module products, resulting in significant cost reductions, according to the call.

Li Auto will allow two technology lines to develop in parallel, including optimizing the range extender for higher efficiency and making pure electric vehicle technology better, Li said in a March 2 media communication.

Early last month, one of Li Auto's under-construction 800 V charging stations was seen at a highway service area in China, sparking widespread discussion in the Chinese community.

On March 10, 36kr cited sources familiar with the matter as saying that Li Auto's infrastructure build-out will see an "NIO pace" and that the company has set a goal of building about 300 supercharging stations within the year, with about 10 already deployed in highway service areas.

The move is in preparation for the launch of Li Auto's first all-electric model, which will be an all-electric MPV expected to be released by the end of 2023, and ultra-fast charging will be one of the highlights of the vehicle, according to the report.
