Svolt Energy, the battery maker that became independent from Great Wall Motor, has started construction of its battery module and pack plant in Thailand, as the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) industry chain targets international markets.

Svolt Energy held a ceremony on July 5 local time to celebrate the start of construction of the plant based in Sriracha Chonburi, according to an announcement yesterday.

The ceremony was attended by Thai officials, Svolt Energy's chairman and CEO Yang Hongxin, and representatives from Hozon Auto, the Chinese EV company that owns the brand.

Svolt Energy's plant is based on the renovation and upgrade of a locally leased facility with a projected capacity of 60,000 packs per year, according to its announcement.

According to current plans, the plant will have two production lines, one for HEV, PHEV and BEV battery module production and the other for battery pack assembly.

Construction of the plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, Svolt Energy said.

While working with existing customers including Great Wall Motor and Hozon, Svolt Energy will also develop new customers and has started business talks with local Thai companies, it said.

The company will also join with local Thai partners to expand into energy storage, lightweight power batteries and battery recycling, Svolt Energy said.

Svolt Energy's announcement did not mention the amount of investment, although last month local media Cailian reported that the battery maker was planning to invest $30 million in the plant.

Svolt Energy was originally Great Wall Motor's power cell division, which began research and development of power cells in 2012.

It became independent from Great Wall Motor in February 2018 and works on next-generation battery materials, cells, modules, packs, BMS, and energy storage technologies.

The battery manufacturer currently has 11 production sites in China and one overseas production site in Heusweiler, Saarland, Germany, according to its website.

Svolt Energy is one of the largest battery manufacturers in China, with 0.35 GWh of batteries installed in May, ranking 11th in the country with a 1.23 percent share, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

On June 15, Nio launched the ET5 Touring in China, with deliveries starting on June 16.

In the first half of the year, Neta delivered 62,417 vehicles, down 1.13 percent from 63,131 units in the same period last year.

The Neta S, its first effort at the premium end of the market, hit the market in China on July 31, 2022, with a current starting price range of RMB 202,800 to RMB 341,800.

GAC Aion announces entry into Thailand with plans for local production

will set up its Southeast Asia headquarters in Thailand within this year, with local production in the country in active preparation, it said.

GAC Aion, the electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary of GAC Group, has announced its entry into the Thai car market, becoming the latest Chinese EV maker to do so.

On June 28, GAC Aion signed a memorandum of cooperation with a Thai dealership to officially enter the Thai market, kicking off the brand's internationalization, said an announcement yesterday.

The signing is the first step in the overseas strategy of GAC Aion, which will set up its Southeast Asian headquarters in Thailand within this year, it said.

Meanwhile, local production of models offered in Thailand is in active preparation, GAC Aion said.

Going forward, GAC Aion will deepen its efforts in the Thai market and expand its presence in Southeast Asia, it said.

GAC Aion sold a record 45,003 vehicles in May, its third consecutive month of more than 40,000 units, according to figures it released earlier this month.

In a ranking released earlier this month by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), GAC Aion ranked second among the top 10 NEV retail sales, behind 's 220,735 units.

GAC Aion plans to produce and sell 500,000 pure electric vehicles this year and launch overseas business efforts, GAC Group spokesman Yin Jie said at a June 27 press conference held by the Guangzhou municipal government.

GAC Aion is the latest local car company to announce its entry into Thailand. As competition in China's EV market grows fiercer, several car companies have set their sights on overseas markets.

Nio (NYSE: ) and Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) are currently focusing their overseas efforts on Europe, in terms of choosing their first overseas market.

Other Chinese EV makers, including Automobile and Leapmotor, are targeting less economically developed markets in Southeast Asia or the Middle East.

On August 24, 2022, Neta announced the launch of the right-hand-drive version of the Neta V EV at a launch event in Thailand, as its first model offered there.

On March 10 this year, Neta laid the foundation stone for its factory in Bangkok, Thailand, which will be its main manufacturing base for building right-hand-drive electric vehicles for export to ASEAN.

Leapmotor partners with ZF to develop smart chassis

Leapmotor will enter the European market, and ZF will use its branding in Europe to help the NEV maker.

Leapmotor recently signed a strategic partnership agreement with German technology giant ZF Group to work together on a smart chassis for passenger cars, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker said today.

The two will jointly develop smart chassis products to provide consumers with a more personalized, intelligent and comfortable and safe driving experience, a Leapmotor press release said.

ZF is continuing to strengthen its localization strategy and will work with more partners to drive the development of EVs in China toward the next generation of mobility, the German company said.

Leapmotor will also enter the European market in the future, and ZF will use its branding in the European market to help the NEV maker's overseas expansion, according to the release.

The press release does not provide anything more on Leapmotor's entry into the European market, and this is the first time we've seen the NEV maker mention the plan.

Leapmotor has been seen as a budget EV maker since its inception, with sales previously contributed mainly by the inexpensive EV T03, which currently has a starting price range of RMB 59,900 to RMB 89,900.

The C11, which went on sale on September 29, 2021, and the C01, which went on sale on September 28, 2022, are Leapmotor's flagship models, targeting the RMB 150,000 to RMB 300,000 range.

The company delivered 12,058 vehicles in May, up 19.75 percent from 10,069 in the same month last year and up 38.18 percent from 8,726 in April.

Leapmotor's local counterpart, , another budget EV maker, has been aggressively entering international markets for the past two years.

A total of 4,000 Neta EVs were shipped abroad, the latest new batch after 3,600 units were sent to overseas markets in March, Neta announced on June 6.

Thailand is Neta's home base for expanding into the ASEAN market, and the company is also actively preparing to enter the European market, Neta said.

Neta will participate in the Munich Motor Show in Germany later this year, and the Neta GT sports car will be available in overseas markets in the not-too-distant future, it said.

Back at ZF, the German tech giant has been in the Chinese market since 1981 and has set up nearly 50 manufacturing companies, four R&D centers, nearly 240 after-sales service outlets in more than 20 cities and employs about 20,000 people in China.

On October 11, 2022, and ZF signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Munich to cooperate in areas including steer-by-wire (SBW) products.

From January to April, Neta V ranked second in Thailand with a 16.5 percent share of all-electric vehicle license plate registrations, Neta said, citing data from Thai website AutoLife.

Neta is now actively preparing for its entry into the European market and will participate in the Munich auto show in Germany later this year, and the Neta GT sports car will be launched in overseas markets in the near future, it said.

Neta will also release a heavyweight global model that will accelerate bringing high-quality electric smart cars within reach, it said, without giving further details.

Neta has been seen as a budget EV maker since its inception in October 2014, as its vehicles are priced primarily to target the lower end of the market. The company is trying to create a higher-end image with its flagship sedan, the Neta S, and its sports car, the Neta GT.

As the EV market in China becomes more competitive, local car companies including Neta and (NYSE: NIO) are starting to make more efforts to expand overseas.

Unlike NIO, which is targeting the more developed European market, Neta is focusing its initial efforts on overseas expansion in Southeast Asia.

On August 24, 2022, the right-hand drive version of the Neta V was launched in Thailand as its first model to be offered there.

On March 10, 2023 Neta laid the foundation stone for its factory in Bangkok, Thailand, which will be its main manufacturing base for building right-hand drive electric vehicles for export to ASEAN.

On May 11, Neta announced its entry into Malaysia, officially launching the right-hand drive version of the Neta V for local consumers at the largest auto show in the region.

Neta delivered 13,029 units in May, up 18.35 percent from 13,029 units in the same month last year and up 17.59 percent from 11,080 units in April, according to data released by the company on June 1.

From January to May this year, Neta delivered 50,285 vehicles, up 0.62 percent from 49,974 in the same period last year, data monitored by CnEVPost showed.
