Tesla announced today that it is opening its Supercharger network in the Chinese mainland on a pilot basis to other brands of electric vehicles (EVs), following its practice in more than 10 other markets.

The EV maker is initially opening 10 Supercharger stations for 37 non-Tesla models, according to an announcement it posted on WeChat.

Notably, the pilot is currently limited to Beijing and Shanghai, with each city offering five Supercharger stations to participate in the pilot.

The 37 non-Tesla models include the NIO ES6, NIO EC6, P7, Li ONE, 001, BYD Han EV, BYD Tang EV, and Polestar 2.

In addition to the Supercharger stations, Tesla has opened 120 destination charging stations on a pilot basis, covering 25 provinces and cities in the Chinese mainland.

To date, Tesla has more than 1,600 Supercharger stations in the Chinese mainland, offering more than 10,000 Superchargers, according to the announcement.

It also has more than 700 destination charging stations in the Chinese mainland, offering more than 2,000 charging piles.

At the end of 2021, Tesla opened its charging network to non-Tesla vehicles on a pilot basis in Europe, and the service is now available to owners in more than 10 countries and regions worldwide, the company said.

Now, owners of non-Tesla-branded EVs in the Chinese mainland can also enjoy an efficient, convenient and dense Tesla charging network, it said.

Tesla hopes its open and innovative business logic will bring together more industry partners to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, it added.

Shanghai auto show: Takeaways from Deutsche Bank

Edison Yu's team shares their key takeaways on new model pricing, design, ADAS, and ultra-fast charging.

As one of the most important auto shows in several years, the ongoing Shanghai auto show is attracting a lot of interest. In a research note sent to investors today, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team shares their thoughts on the event.

This year's Shanghai auto show began last week, with media days on April 18-19, professional visitor days on April 20-21, and general public access on April 22 - 27.

Yu's team shared their four key takeaways regarding new model pricing, local design, Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) capabilities, and ultra-fast charging.

"Pricing to be competitive at least through early 2024 With the price war raging on, we continue to expect OEMs to be aggressive as market share is the #1 priority," the team wrote.

Although no significant price cuts were announced at the show, automakers were very careful in disclosing prices.

did not reveal pricing details for the G6 other than the previous range of 200,000 to 300,000 yuan. Likewise, NIO did not detail the price of the new ES6, the team noted.

If demand stays low, there could be another wave of price cuts, so the automakers do not want to overprice their new models. In addition, lithium carbonate prices have fallen sharply, providing more cushion for pure electric vehicles, Yu's team said.

The team expects G6 pricing to trend toward the lower end of the range previously mentioned by XPeng, especially given that the X starts at just 190,000 yuan and the Model Y could see one more price cut this year.

To offset the drop in average selling price, automakers are taking steps to squeeze the structural costs of new platforms, such as XPeng's SEPA 2.0 platform, according to the team.

In terms of product design, the quality of local models is improving rapidly, and several local automakers began turning to foreign talent a few years ago to speed up the process, the team said.

BYD's design chief is Wolfang Egger, previously at Audi, and NIO's vice president of design is Kris Tomasson who came over from BMW, the team noted.

The team highlighted two models that really showcase this shift: the BYD Song L and the Hozon GT Speedster.

"There are many other examples of bold and sleek design at the show and we expect this to be the new norm as the market shifts from ICE to EV," the team wrote.

With design and cost advantages, a natural extension is to export. During the show, Zeekr provided more details about its European strategy, the team noted.

On the ADAS side, Yu's team said subscriptions have proven difficult to monetize.

"We would have thought selling an ADAS subscription service could be easy next step. However, consumers are reluctant to adopt this business model," the team wrote.

XPeng is trying to dramatically reduce the cost of its XNGP system while improving its performance.

is currently beta testing the City NOA software with a goal of rolling it out to 100 cities nationwide by the end of 2023. The company believes its AD Max 3.0 system will be able to operate without HD maps and guarantees that all upgrades will be free for life with no subscription fees, the team noted.

NIO's NOP+ beta program is expected to end at the end of June and then begin charging subscribers RMB 380 per month.

"NIO is offering 2 years for free to 2023 ET7 buyers who pay the order deposit before June and we would expect this subscription to be increasingly used a promotional bundle to boost sales," the team wrote.

In terms of ultra-fast charging facilities, Yu's team said that automakers are just beginning to build up such capabilities, and real-world charging requires synchronization of the car, charger and grid. If any part becomes a bottleneck, charging speeds will not reach maximum performance.

NIO's ultra-fast 500 kW charger is now in service and open to other brands.

XPeng is rapidly rolling out its new S4 480 kW DC ultra-fast charging station, with a target of 500 this year.

Li Auto is focused on 800V solutions and expects its upcoming battery electric vehicle (BEV)to have 400 km of range in 10 minutes, the team noted.

Li Auto announced on April 18 that its first all-electric model will be the world's first to feature 's 4C Qilin Battery.

By 2025, Li Auto's product array will include a super flagship model, five extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and five BEVs, the company said.

China Electric eMobility eV Neta Neta GT Product Launch Sports Car

Neta unveils two-door electric sports car Neta GT, deliveries expected in H1

The GT, set for mass production and delivery in the first half of 2023, will be the first real sports car that young people in China can own, an executive previously said.

Neta Auto, the electric vehicle (EV) brand owned by Hozon Auto, has unveiled its first electric sports car, with deliveries expected to begin in the first half of the year.

Neta officially unveiled the Neta GT, a two-door, four-seat all-electric sports car that is its second model based on the Shanhai platform after its flagship sedan, the Neta S, at a launch event on the night of April 4.

The EV maker mentioned the name Neta E when it previewed the sports car late last year, but a month ago, it made the model's name official with the Neta GT.

The electric sports car measures 4,715 mm in length, 1,979 mm in width and 1,415 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,770 mm.

For comparison, the Neta S measures 4,980 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width and 1,450 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,980 mm.

The Neta GT will be available in single-motor and dual-motor versions, with the single-motor version having a maximum motor power of 170 kW and the dual-motor version having a maximum total power of 340 kW, as indicated by a previous regulatory filing.

Its power battery suppliers include CATL and Eve Energy, and the battery types include lithium iron phosphate batteries as well as ternary batteries.

Neta GT's battery pack has three options of 64.24 kWh, 74.48 kWh and 77.9 kWh, and the CLTC range includes 560 km, 580 km and 660 km.

Neta did not announce the official launch and delivery dates of the Neta GT, but last December 16, Hozon Auto CEO Zhang Yong said on Weibo that the model will be mass-produced and delivered in the first half of 2023.

Pricing information for the Neta GT is unknown, though Zhang previously said that the model would be the first true sports car that young people in China could own, suggesting that its price will likely be affordable.

The current starting price range for the Neta S flagship sedan is RMB 242,800 to RMB 341,800.

Neta is seen as a budget EV maker in China, as its vehicles are priced primarily for the lower end of the market, and the Neta S is its first effort at the premium end of the market.

Neta delivered 10,087 vehicles in March, essentially unchanged from 10,073 in February and down 16.12 percent from 12,026 in the same month last year, the company's previously announced figures show.

The Neta S delivered 2,206 units in March, up 8 percent from 2,048 units in February. A total of 4,793 units of the Neta V and 3,088 units of the Neta U were delivered in March.

China Denza Electric eMobility eV Industry News Leapmotor Neta price war

More Chinese EV makers promise no price cuts as price war intensifies consumer wait-and-see sentiment

EV makers including , and Denza have all introduced 90-day price protection policies.

As the auto price war in China continues, some electric vehicle (EV) makers are beginning to make it clear that they will not cut prices in an attempt to dispel the wait-and-see sentiment of potential consumers.

EV makers including Leapmotor, Neta and Denza have all introduced price protection policies, after (NASDAQ: LI) introduced a similar policy and (NYSE: NIO) made it clear that the company would not cut prices.

Leapmotor announced yesterday that for consumers who purchase any of its models during this month, they will get the difference back if the price drops within 90 days or if the company offers additional cash discounts.

This is in line with a policy introduced earlier this week by Li Auto, whose salespeople said it was designed to make clear to consumers that its models would not be reduced in price.

Neta, Hozon Auto's EV brand, announced today that consumers who order its flagship sedan, the Neta S, by April 30 will not have to worry about the model's price dropping within 90 days.

If the price of the model drops within 90 days of the consumer's purchase, Neta will refund the difference.

Notably, along with the announcement of the price protection policy, Neta began offering an RMB 23,000 ($3,340) discount for the lowest-priced model of the Neta S, bringing the model's starting price down to RMB 179,800 from the previous RMB 202,800, valid until the end of April 30.

Neta models on sale also include the Neta V and Neta U, which start at less than RMB 150,000 and are not covered by its price protection policy.

Denza, 's premium brand, announced that if consumers who purchase its vehicles during the month see a drop in official guide prices will receive a rebate for the difference.

Auto and Volvo Car's jointly held Lynk & Co brand also began offering a 90-day price protection policy that expires on April 30.

The increasing number of car companies joining the price war has led to an increased wait-and-see mood among consumers to avoid seeing price cuts soon after purchasing a car.

An NIO executive said yesterday that they noticed Li Auto's move and the company had considered whether to issue a similar policy.

But for NIO, it has previously made it clear that prices will not be lowered, the company's assistant vice president of sales operations Pu Yang said at a media event yesterday, adding that NIO is not only not cutting prices for 90 days, but prices will not change for a longer period of time.

This article is being updated, please refresh later for more content.

's insurance registrations last week in China were higher than the previous week's 13,266, while 's were lower than the previous week's 3,345.

's new energy vehicles (NEVs) saw 37,141 insurance registrations in China for the week ending March 12, lower than the previous week's 38,932, according to numbers shared today by auto blogger @一路向北BYD.

Tesla vehicles saw 17,032 insurance registrations in China last week, higher than the previous week's 13,266.

NIO was 2,170 last week, down from 3,345 the week before.

registered 4,243 units last week, up from 3,222 units the previous week.

was 1,635 units last week, up from 1,421 units the week before.

BYD's premium brand Denza vehicles saw 1,853 insurance registrations last week, up from 1,808 the week before.

was 1,043 units last week, down from 1,814 units the week before.

BMW's NEVs registered 1,486 insurance units in China last week, down from 1,663 units the week before.

The past week has seen a rare price war in China's auto industry involving not only NEV makers, but traditional internal combustion engine automakers as well.

Rumors surfaced last week that BMW dealers were offering a massive subsidy for the all-electric BMW i3 in China, and that consumers who pay full price for the car can even get the model for RMB 120,000 to 180,000, less than half the retail price.

BMW insiders denied this, but sources at BMW dealers said they are indeed offering discounts, and that these measures were only introduced this month, local media Cailian reported last week.

For the BMW i3 eDrive35 L, which currently has a guide price of RMB 353,900, the price after discounts is RMB 248,000, the report said, citing BMW dealership sources.

Consumers will also receive an additional RMB 6,000 subsidy if they trade in their vehicles, the source said.

The increasing number of car companies joining the price war has led to increased consumer wait-and-see sentiment to avoid seeing price reductions shortly after purchasing a car.

Li Auto has introduced a consumer purchase price protection benefit that covers all of the company's currently available models -- Li L7, Li L8, Li L9.

For consumers who purchase these models, if the prices drops within 90 days of their order, then Li Auto will refund the difference.

The policy, which is available to consumers when they purchase the Li L7, Li L8, and Li L9, is primarily intended to make clear to them that Li Auto will not drop the prices, local media outlet The Paper said earlier today, citing salespeople from the company.

Neta starts construction of its first overseas plant in Thailand, with planned annual capacity of 20,000 units

is building the electric vehicle assembly site with Thailand's BGAC and expects it to start production by the end of January 2024.

(Rendering of Neta's Thailand plant)

Neta, a brand owned by Chinese electric vehicle (EV) company Hozon Auto, has started construction of its first overseas factory in Thailand, having brought its vehicles to the Southeast Asian country last year.

Neta laid the groundbreaking for its plant in Bangkok, Thailand, on March 10, which will be its main manufacturing base for right-hand drive EVs for export to ASEAN, the company said today.

The plant is Neta's first overseas factory and the first in Thailand for a new Chinese carmaker.

When completed, the plant will have a capacity of 20,000 units per year and is expected to be operational by the end of January 2024, Neta said.

Neta has signed a cooperation agreement with Thailand's BGAC to jointly build the EV assembly site.

Neta plans to expand its overseas business to more regions including the Middle East and the European Union, making it a brand recognized and trusted by consumers around the world, said Zhang Yong, the company's co-founder and CEO, at a groundbreaking ceremony.

Neta is currently targeting mainly the budget EV market, with the Neta V and Neta U priced at around RMB 100,000 ($14,380) to RMB 150,000 in China.

On July 31, 2022, Neta officially launched its flagship sedan Neta S, targeting the RMB 200,000 to 300,000 market.

On August 24, 2022, Neta announced the launch of the right-hand drive version of the Neta V EV at a launch event in Thailand, as its first model to be offered there.

Neta said at the time that it already had 25 authorized dealers in Thailand, covering major Thai cities including Bangkok and those from surrounding provinces.

Neta delivered 10,073 units in February, up 41.53 percent from 7,117 units a year earlier and 67.44 percent from 6,016 units in January, according to figures the company announced on March 1.

On February 28, Neta announced that close to 100 units of the Neta U and Neta V were shipped to Jordan, the company's first exports to the Middle Eastern market.
