Tesla to equip revamped Model 3 in China with CATL’s new battery, report says

's revamped China-made Model 3 will use 's new M3P lithium iron phosphate battery, with the base model battery pack capacity upgraded from 60 kWh to 66 kWh, according to 36kr.

Tesla's revamped China-made Model 3 will have upgraded battery packs, and the rear-wheel drive base model will use CATL's new M3P lithium iron phosphate battery, with capacity upgraded from 60 kWh to 66kWh, local media 36kr reported today.

Tesla has a practice of upgrading its batteries with every facelift, previously, the standard range version of the China-made Model 3 has been upgraded from 55 kWh to 60 kWh, the report noted.

The 66-kWh pack is not only available for the upgraded Model 3, but can also be used in future revisions of the Model Y, the report said, citing sources.

The range of the China-made Model 3 rear-drive version is currently 556 kilometers. The range of the facelifted Model 3 is expected to increase after receiving a 6-kWh boost in battery capacity, the report said.

The revamped Model 3, with the project code name Highland, is expected to launch in the third quarter, the report said, citing industry chain sources.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 and Model Y, with an annual capacity of about 1.1 million vehicles, making it the largest Tesla factory in the world.

On March 1, Reuters reported that Tesla was working to retool its Shanghai plant for a Model 3 facelift, a project codenamed Highland by Tesla.

The Highland version of the Model 3 is expected to go into production in Shanghai in September, the Reuters report said, citing a person familiar with the matter.

With Highland, Tesla aims to cut production costs and boost the appeal of the electric sedan, which debuted in 2017, people involved in the project said.

In addition to the Highland version of the Model 3, the Reuters report also mentioned that Tesla was preparing to make production changes to the Model Y.

The changes to the Model Y -- which Tesla has codenamed Project Juniper -- involve the exterior and interior of the SUV, with the goal of starting production in 2024, according to Reuters.

On May 16, Bloomberg reported that Tesla was nearing the final stages before starting trial production of its revamped Model 3 sedan in Shanghai.

The revamped Model 3 is slightly longer, sportier and has a sleeker interior design than earlier versions, according to the report.

On the battery front, it's worth noting that there were rumors last August that CATL would supply M3P batteries to Tesla.

CATL will begin supplying M3P batteries to Tesla in the fourth quarter, and will put them in Model Y using 72 kWh packs, local media outlet LatePost reported on August 3, 2022.

The lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) material used in CATL's M3P battery will be supplied by Shenzhen Dynanonic Co, which had plans to put 110,000 tons of LMFP material into production in the second half of 2022, according to the report.

Tesla was also developing LMFP batteries, but with a long development cycle, it will first source such batteries from suppliers, the report said.

LMFP batteries are an improvement on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.

Batteries are usually named after the cathode materials they use. LMFP cathode materials can be made by adding manganese to the LFP cathode materials currently used to make LMFP batteries.

The LMFP route can be divided into two types, using 100 percent LMFP material as the cathode or doping the LMFP material with other materials such as aluminum or magnesium to make the cathode.

CATL's M3P batteries' cathode materials are doped with lithium ternary materials and LMFP materials, a solution that solves the problem of short cycle life and high internal resistance of LMFP batteries, as noted in the LatePost report.

On August 18, 2022, Sina Tech cited two people familiar with the matter as saying that Tesla would soon launch a new China-made Model 3, with the biggest highlight being that the entire lineup will use M3P batteries supplied by CATL, with a range improvement of at least 10 percent.

With the new battery pack, the two versions of the China-made Model 3 are expected to have a range of more than 600 km and 700 km, up from the previous 556 km to 675 km, the report said.

China Electric eMobility eV Tesla XPeng XPeng G6 XPeng Stock

Xpeng shares up nearly 20% this week ahead of G6 launch

will hold an official launch event for the G6 today starting at 8 pm Beijing time, where the official pricing will be announced.

Xpeng's (NYSE: XPEV) highly anticipated new SUV, the G6, a (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y competitor, will go on sale in China in about 10 hours. Ahead of that, investors are clearly excited.

Xpeng's Hong Kong-traded stock was up 4.72 percent to HK$46.90 as of press time, giving it a cumulative gain of more than 18 percent since Monday.

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) company's US-traded ADRs rose 7.29 percent to $11.78 at yesterday's close, giving it an 18.99 percent gain for the week.

The biggest catalyst driving the rally in Xpeng shares this week is the upcoming launch of the G6.

Xpeng will hold the launch event of the G6 starting at 8 pm Beijing time (8 am US Eastern time) on June 29, and it posted a Weibo early this morning saying that everything is in place for the event.

Xpeng gave the G6 its debut on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, saying the G6 is the ultimate form of car before full autonomous driving is achieved.

The model is based on the 800 V high-voltage platform and can get a 300-kilometer range in as little as 10 minutes of charge, Xpeng said at the time. The company's other 800 V-based model is the flagship SUV G9.

Xpeng began pre-sales for the G6 on June 9, with pre-sale prices starting at RMB 225,000 ($31,090), significantly lower than the Tesla Model Y's starting price of RMB 263,900 in China.

The Xpeng G6 received more than 25,000 orders within 72 hours of the start of pre-sales, the company announced on Weibo on June 12.

The G6 show cars were already available at Xpeng stores, and the model would officially launch on June 29 with deliveries starting in July, the company said earlier this month.

Referring to the practices of other local Chinese EV companies, Xpeng will likely announce a lower final pricing than the pre-sale price when the G6 officially launches today, thus providing consumers with a surprise that exceeds expectations.

The Xpeng G6 is an all-electric mid-size SUV with a length, width and height of 4,753 mm, 1,920 mm and 1,650 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,890 mm, a regulatory filing from March showed.

For comparison, the Tesla Model Y has a length, width and height of 4,750 mm, 1,921 mm and 1,624 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.

The G6 will be a hot seller in China's new energy SUV market priced in the RMB 200,000 to 300,000 range and will enable Xpeng's total deliveries to grow well above the industry in the third quarter, the company's management said in a call with analysts after announcing its first-quarter earnings on May 24.

In the view of Wall Street analysts, the G6 will be critical to boosting Xpeng's sluggish sales.

"With margins and cash burn looking materially worse following 1Q earnings, we believe management may be making its last stand with the G6," Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team said in a research note sent to investors on May 30.

Xpeng management said in a May 24 conference call that it had set aside about two months between the start of production and delivery of the G6, and that Xpeng wanted the model to reach more than twice the sales of the P7i.

This means, according to Yu's team, that Xpeng management expects the G6 to sell 6,000-8,000 units a month.

The G6 needs to be successful for XPeng to be truly relevant to the market again, the team said.

China Electric eMobility eV GAC Aion Sales Target Tesla

GAC Aion aims to sell 500,000 all-electric vehicles this year

sold 271,156 vehicles for the full year 2022, and the latest target implies an 84.4 percent increase.

GAC Aion, the electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary of Guangzhou-based GAC Group, is targeting sales of about 500,000 vehicles this year, implying an almost doubling of growth from last year.

GAC Aion plans to produce and sell 500,000 pure-play EVs this year and launch its overseas business efforts, GAC Group spokeswoman Yin Jie said at a June 27 press conference held by the Guangzhou municipal government.

GAC Aion will aim to exceed 1 million vehicles in annual production and sales by 2025, Yin said, adding that the company is now moving full steam ahead with its initial public offering (IPO) efforts.

For the full year 2022, GAC Aion sold 271,156 vehicles, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

This year's sales target of 500,000 vehicles would represent an 84.4 percent increase.

GAC Aion sold a record 45,003 vehicles in May, its third consecutive month of more than 40,000, figures it released earlier this month show.

This represents a 113.73 percent increase over the 21,056 vehicles sold in the same month last year and a 9.73 percent increase over the 41,012 vehicles sold in April.

In a ranking released earlier this month by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), GAC Aion ranked second among the top 10 new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales, behind 's 220,735 units.

From January to May, GAC Aion sold 166,323 vehicles, which was an increase of 118.44 percent from 76,142 units in the same period last year.

This makes GAC Aion the No. 3 player in retail sales in China from January to May, behind BYD with 923,343 units and with 219,893 units.

GAC Group aims to see NEVs contributing 25 percent of sales by 2025, with its own brands contributing 50 percent of those NEV sales, Yi said in the press conference.

China Deliveries Electric eMobility eV EV Data Insurance Registrations Li Auto Neta Nio Tesla Weekly Data XPeng

China NEV insurance registrations for week ending Jun 25: Tesla 16,700, Li Auto 7,500, Nio 3,200

sold 8,000 units between June 1 and June 25. Its previous guidance implied 10,187-12,187 vehicles would be delivered in June.

For the week of June 19 to June 25, (NASDAQ: LI) sold 7,500 units, continuing to lead among China's new car-making brands, the company said today on Weibo.

As of June 25, Li Auto has sold 27,300 units this month and is on track to reach its 30,000-unit monthly sales goal, it said.

Li Auto didn't explain what that weekly sales tally was based on, but apparently they are insurance registrations. The company had suspended sharing those numbers in May, but has since resumed sharing them.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) sold 3,200 units last week and 8,000 units from June 1 to June 25, according to figures shared by Li Auto.

Notably, June 22 to June 24 was a three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, and June 25 was a Sunday, but a working day after the holiday.

Nio's weekly sales have continued to grow over the past three weeks, as deliveries of new models began. It was 1,500 units in the week of June 5 to June 11 and 2,000 units in the week of June 12 to June 18.

Nio officially launched the new ES6 on May 24 and the ET5 Touring on June 15.

Deliveries of the new ES6 began on the night of the launch on May 24, and deliveries of the ET5 Touring began on June 16.

In addition to these two new models, Nio will also begin deliveries of the new ES8 on June 28, which was launched on Nio Day 2022 on December 24, 2022.

When Nio reported first-quarter earnings on June 9, it guided for second-quarter deliveries of between 23,000 and 25,000 vehicles, meaning it expects to deliver between 10,187 and 12,187 vehicles in June.

On June 20, Nio signed a share subscription agreement with Abu Dhabi-based investment firm CYVN Holdings, which will invest a total of about $1.1 billion in it.

(NASDAQ: TSLA) sold 16,700 units in China last week and 57,300 units from June 1 to June 25, according to figures shared by Li Auto.

In the two weeks prior to last week, Tesla sold 16,400 units and 14,500 units respectively in China.

From June 1 to June 25, Tesla was the top-selling premium brand in China, surpassing Mercedes-Benz's 52,100 units and above Audi's 51,600 units, according to a table by Li Auto.

On June 16, Tesla announced that Chinese consumers who purchase and take delivery of an already produced rear-wheel drive version of the Model 3 this month will receive an insurance subsidy of RMB 8,000 ($1,110).

(NYSE: XPEV) sold 2,600 units last week and 6,400 units from June 1 to June 25.

Xpeng began pre-sales of the G6 on June 9 at a price starting at RMB 225,000, significantly lower than the Tesla Model Y's starting price of RMB 263,900 in China.

The Xpeng G6 received more than 25,000 orders within 72 hours of the start of the pre-sale, the company announced on Weibo on June 12.

The G6 show cars were already available at Xpeng stores, and the model will officially go on sale June 29 with deliveries starting in July, the company said earlier this month.

Leapmotor sold 3,100 units last week and 10,600 units from June 1 to June 25.

On June 20, Leapmotor announced that it had reached 200,000 cumulative deliveries since its inception.

Leapmotor delivered 12,058 vehicles in May and had 192,962 cumulative deliveries by the end of May, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

sold 2,600 units last week and 6,900 units between June 1 and June 25. It began deliveries of its third model, the Zeekr X, on June 12.

Denza sold 2,400 units last week, and 8,300 units from June 1 to June 25.

Denza, which currently has only the Denza D9 MPV on sale, will officially launch the Denza N7 on July 3, its first SUV since the rebranding last year.

The Denza N7 is aimed at the market for traditional internal combustion engine vehicles priced around 400,000 yuan, an executive said earlier.

sold 1,900 units last week and 6,700 between June 1 and June 25.

A total of 4,000 Neta EVs were shipped abroad, the latest new batch after 3,600 were sent to overseas markets in March, the company said on June 6.

Great Wall Motor's Wey brand sold 1,500 units last week and 5,000 units from June 1 to June 25.

Changan Automobile's NEV subsidiary Deepal sold 1,500 units last week and 4,900 units from June 1 to June 25.

China Deepal Deepal S7 Electric eMobility eV Industry News Product Launch Tesla

Changan’s EV brand Deepal launches S7 SUV at about half price of Tesla Model Y

The Deepal S7 is about the same size as the Model Y and is available in both BEV and EREV versions.

Changan Automobile's new energy vehicle (NEV) brand Deepal has launched an SUV that will compete with Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y. Its first product is aimed at the Model 3 market.

Deepal officially rolled out the Deepal S7 at a launch event yesterday evening with a starting price of RMB 149,900 ($20,878), down RMB 20,000 from the pre-sale price announced on May 20 and well below the Model Y's RMB 263,900.

The Deepal S7 is available in two powertrain versions, including a battery electric vehicle (BEV) version, and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version similar to (NASDAQ: LI) vehicles. Deliveries of the new SUV are to begin on June 30.

The Deepal S7 EREV is available in three versions with starting prices of RMB 149,900, RMB 159,900 and RMB 169,900 respectively.

The Deepal S7 BEV is available in 2 versions with starting prices of RMB189,900 and RMB202,900 respectively.

The model's price range at the time of pre-sale was RMB 169,900 - RMB 239,900.

For comparison, the Tesla Model Y is currently offered in China in three versions -- an entry-level rear-wheel drive version, a dual-motor all-wheel drive long-range version, and a dual-motor all-wheel drive performance version -- with starting prices of RMB 263,900, RMB 313,900, and RMB 363,900, respectively.

The Deepal S7 is a mid-size SUV with a length, width and height of 4,750 mm, 1,930 mm and 1,625 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,900 mm.

The dimensions are similar to those of the Model Y, which measures 4,750 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width and 1,624 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.

Both versions of the Deepal S7 BEV are rear-wheel drive and feature a single electric motor with a maximum power of 160 kW and 190 kW, respectively, and a maximum torque of 320 Nm. They can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and 7.5 seconds, respectively.

These two BEV versions are equipped with a power battery capacity of 66.8 kWh and 79.97 kWh, providing a CLTC range of 520 km and 620 km, respectively.

All three versions of the Deepal S7 EREV are powered by a 1.5 L engine with a maximum power of 70 kW. They all have an electric motor with a peak power of 175 kW and a peak torque of 320 Nm.

All three versions can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds, 7.6 seconds and 7.7 seconds, respectively.

They have a battery pack capacity of 18.99 kWh, 18.99 kWh and 31.73 kWh, providing a battery range of 121 km, 121 km and 200 km, respectively.

At full fuel and full charge, the three versions of the Deepal S7 EREV have a CLTC range of 1,040 km, 1,040 km, and 1,120 km, respectively.

Deepal, Changan's NEV brand announced in 2022, officially launched the Deepal SL03 sedan on July 25 last year, a competitor to the Model 3.

Unlike the Tesla Model 3, the Deepal SL03 is available in three forms of power -- a BEV version, an EREV version, and a version with a hydrogen fuel cell.

In May, Deepal delivered 7,021 units, bringing January-May deliveries to 33,585, although last month's delivery was 9.48 percent lower than April's 7,756 units.

Deepal's goals for 2023 include selling 200,000 vehicles and making both the SL03 and S7 hot sellers, the brand's CEO Deng Chenghao said in an interview with Auto Home in April.

Price wars are short-term actions, and car companies ultimately need to compete on product competitiveness, technology, branding, channels and service capabilities, Deng said in that interview.

"I think the whole industry will be sustainable only if there is a value war," he said.

BYD BYD Atto 3 BYD Global BYD UAE China Electric eMobility eV Tesla

BYD expands presence in Middle East with launch of Atto 3 in UAE

The Atto 3 is priced significantly lower than other EVs in the UAE, making it by far the most accessible electric model available in the UAE through official dealers.

BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has entered the UAE passenger car market to expand its presence in the Middle East further after having previously entered Israel and Jordan.

On June 21, BYD launched the Atto 3 in the UAE with its local partner Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility Company. The model, known as the Yuan Plus in China, is the first global model from the new energy vehicle (NEV) maker.

This revolutionary vehicle marks a significant milestone in the UAE's journey towards sustainable mobility and reinforces both BYD and Al-Futtaim's commitment to contributing towards the UAE's Net-Zero 2050 strategic goals, BYD said in a press release.

The Atto 3 is priced at Dh149,900 ($40,810) in the UAE, below the Dh150,000 mark.

The pricing makes it by far the most accessible EV model available in the UAE through an official dealership, said Gulf News, an English-language UAE media outlet.

Other EVs are priced closer to Dh200,000 and higher, leaving a fairly open field for BYD to build scale in this market, Gulf News said.

BYD officially launched the Yuan Plus in China on February 19, 2022, and opens pre-orders for the model in Australia on the same day under the Atto 3 name.

The model is currently offered in five versions in China with a price range of RMB 139,800 ($19,470) to RMB 167,800.

Prior to the official launch of the Atto 3 in the UAE, more than 95,000 online visitors viewed the model, with more than 3,000 registered leads and 153 bookings, said Al-Futtaim managing director Hasan Nergiz, according to Gulf News.

"What people don't understand that much is that BYD is already the No. 1 EV manufacturer in the world and outsells . Atto 3 is the model that we will deploy to build a presence in the UAE and then will come the other models," Nergiz said.

The Atto 3 is BYD's first A-class SUV based on e-Platform 3.0, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.3 seconds and a maximum range of 420 km WLTP.

BYD considered the needs and preferences of its UAE customers, and the model passed product localization and high-temperature testing, it said.

"We understand the importance of product localization for the UAE market with its unique climate and hot weather," said AD Huang, general manager of BYD Middle East & Africa.

"Last year, we conducted extensive hot weather testing to ensure the BYD Atto 3 performs optimally even in the region's challenging climate and hot summers. Over the course of several months, we drove more than 100,000 kilometers across the UAE in order to optimize the vehicle's performance and ensure that our customers receive the best driving experience possible with the BYD Atto 3," he said.

Currently, EV sales account for less than 5 percent of new car sales in the UAE, and that number is skewed toward fleet sales rather than retail buyers, the Gulf News report said, adding that that could change as people in their 20s or 30s become early adopters of EVs.

BYD will next launch its flagship Han sedan in the UAE, for which pre-orders are open on the BYD UAE website and will actually launch in October.

The UAE is the latest Middle East market BYD has entered, with the NEV maker announcing its entry into the Israeli passenger car market last August and launching four models -- Dolphin, Tang EV, Atto 3 and Han EV -- in Jordan on March 9.

BYD sold 240,220 NEVs in May, up 108.99 percent from 114,943 units in the same month last year and up 14.23 percent from 210,295 units in April, according to data released earlier this month.

In May, BYD sold 10,203 NEVs in overseas markets, down 31.19 percent from 14,827 units in April.
