China NEV insurance registrations for week ending Jul 2: Tesla 17,400, Li Auto 6,500, Nio 4,100

's sales of 4,100 units last week are second only to in the table.

Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) shares last week's sales of major new car makers in China, showing how it and its major peers fared.

For the week of June 26 to July 2, Li Auto sold 6,500 units, continuing to top the sales chart for China's new car-making brands, the company said today on Weibo.

Li Auto did not explain on what basis the weekly sales were measured, but apparently they were insurance registrations. The company had suspended sharing those numbers in May, but has since resumed sharing them.

In June, Li Auto exceeded 30,000 monthly deliveries for the first time, making it the fifth luxury brand to exceed 30,000 monthly deliveries after Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and , and the only Chinese luxury brand among them, it said.

In July, Li Auto will challenge higher sales targets to become the luxury car brand of choice for more families, the company said.

Li Auto released data on July 1 showing it delivered a record 32,575 vehicles in June, the first time it has surpassed the 30,000 mark.

In the second quarter, Li Auto delivered 86,533 vehicles, up 201.65 percent year-on-year and up 64.56 percent from the first quarter, exceeding the upper end of its previously provided guidance range of 76,000 to 81,000 vehicles.

In the first half of the year, Li Auto delivered 139,117 vehicles, up 130.31 percent year-on-year, surpassing last year's full-year deliveries of 133,246.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) sold 4,100 units last week, second only to Li Auto among China's new car-making brands.

Nio delivered 10,707 vehicles in June, up 73.96 percent from 6,155 in May, although down 17.39 percent from 12,961 in the same month last year.

The deliveries included 6,383 SUVs, and 4,324 sedans, Nio said on July 1, without disclosing figures for specific models.

In the second quarter, Nio delivered 23,520 vehicles, down 6.14 percent from a year ago and down 24.23 percent from the first quarter. The deliveries were slightly above the lower end of the guidance range it provided on June 9 of 23,000 to 25,000 vehicles.

In the first half of the year, Nio delivered 54,561 vehicles, an increase of 7.35 percent year-on-year.

Nio's delivery rebound in June was helped by the start of deliveries of several new models, especially the new ES6.

The company launched the new ES6, based on the NT 2.0 platform, in China on May 24, with deliveries starting on launch night.

On June 15, Nio launched the ET5 Touring in China, with deliveries starting on June 16.

On June 28, Nio began deliveries in China for the new ES8, the flagship SUV launched on Nio Day 2022 on December 24, 2022.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) sold 17,400 units last week, ranking fourth among premium brands, according to the table shared by Li Auto.

The top-selling premium brands in China last week continued to be German luxury brands BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, with 20,800, 20,500 and 19,600 respectively.

Li Auto was No. 6 in premium brand sales, behind Cadillac. Nio was No. 9, behind Volvo and Lexus.

Leapmotor was at 3,400 last week, at 3,200, at 3,100 and (NYSE: XPEV) at 2,700.

Deutsche Bank on China EV sales: Jun gathering momentum

After the price cut and a series of new models, sales could reach 20,000 units per month in the third quarter, according to Edison Yu's team.

China's major electric vehicle (EV) makers recently announced their June deliveries, and Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team provided their take, as usual.

"June EV sales surprised to the upside as demand picked up, likely signaling some normalization in consumer behavior and release of pent-up demand from buyers taking advantage of low prices," the team said in a research note sent to investors today.

(NASDAQ: LI) again led the way among the upstarts, setting a new monthly record, while Nio (NYSE: NIO) saw a large improvement in monthly sales, driven by the speedy ramp-up of the ES6, the team noted.

Looking ahead, pressure will be on Nio and (NYSE: XPEV) to deliver big growth in the second half with new vehicle launches, while Li Auto works to increase its already strong order book, Yu's team said.

As a backdrop, Nio delivered 10,707 vehicles in June, up 73.96 percent from 6,155 in May, though down 17.39 percent from 12,961 a year earlier.

Xpeng delivered 8,620 vehicles in June, up 14.84 percent from May and the fifth sequential growth, despite a 43.64 percent decline from the same month last year.

Li Auto delivered a record 32,575 vehicles in June, surpassing the 30,000 mark for the first time.

Yu's team said Nio deliveries were slightly below their forecast, though the new ES6 appears to be ramping up smoothly and should be a bigger contributor in July along with the full month of production of the ET5 Touring.

After the price cut and a slew of new models, Nio could reach 20,000 units per month in the third quarter, the team said.

The team said Xpeng deliveries exceeded their expectations and, most importantly, the initial reception to the new G6 looks increasingly positive.

Looking ahead, Xpeng is on track to hit at least 10,000 deliveries in July and 15,000 in September is doable, the team said.

June gathering momentum

June EV sales surprised to the upside as demand picked up, likely signaling some normalization in consumer behavior and release of pent-up demand from buyers taking advantage of low prices.

Total NEV retail sales appear to be tracking around 670k according to preliminary CPCA forecasts or +16 percent MoM (+26 percent YoY).

Li Auto once again led the way among the upstarts setting a new monthly record while Nio saw a large improvement MoM driven by speedy ramp up of ES6.

Looking ahead, the pressure will be on Nio and XPEV to deliver big growth in 2H from new launches while Li Auto strives to increase its already robust order book.

June OEM recap

Li Auto delivered 32,575 vehicles (+15 percent MoM; +150 percent YoY), easily beating our forecast. Looking ahead, management is targeting L8 and L9 to be +10,000 each and L7 at 15,000 in monthly sales for 3Q and then 40,000 total in 4Q.

To support this, we are expecting a cheaper variant of the L9 to be available later in the year.

Separately, the first BEV (Li MEGA) is set to be unveiled in 4Q, catering to the >500k RMB segment.

The company exited the month with 331 retail stores and 323 servicing centers.

Nio delivered 10,707 units (+74 percent MoM; -17 percent YoY), slightly below our forecast.

The new ES6 appears to be ramping up smoothly and should be an even bigger contributor in July along with a full month of ET5 Touring production. New ES8 deliveries also began in the last few days of June.

Following the price cut and slew of new models, we think 20,000 in monthly sales is achievable during 3Q.

Nio exited the month with ~1,500 battery swap stations.

XPeng delivered 8,620 units (+15 percent MoM; -44 percent YoY), ahead of our expectations. P7 sales increased 17 percent MoM to nearly 5,200.

Most importantly, the initial reception to the new G6 is looking increasingly positive.

Starting price will be just 210k RMB and management raised its pre-sale number to +35,000 units (vs. prior +25,000), suggesting a robust pipeline of deliveries for 3Q.

Looking ahead, we expect July can reach at least 10,000 deliveries and 15,000 in September is doable.

Zeekr delivered sales of 10,620 vehicles (+22 percent MoM; +147 percent YoY). Looking ahead, Zeekr is offering some promotions through September on the 001 (likely in response to ET5 Touring competition) including free upgrade options on exterior color, larger 100 kWh battery, dual-motor 4WD, air suspension, and/or charging credits.

In addition, the company is providing special financing offers on all models.

Recall, Zeekr is targeting 140,000 in total unit sales this year (<43,000 through 6 months so far).

Zeekr delivers 10,620 vehicles in Jun, begins offering large purchase benefits

is offering customers who buy the Zeekr 001 at least RMB 28,000 worth of option benefits in the third quarter, as it aims to deliver about 140,000 vehicles this year.

's premium electric vehicle (EV) brand Zeekr is back above the 10,000-unit mark in monthly deliveries and is starting to offer limited-time benefits for its flagship model to meet annual delivery targets.

Zeekr delivered 10,620 units in June, up 146.86 percent year-on-year and up 22.38 percent from May, according to data released today.

This is the fifth sequential increase in monthly deliveries for Zeekr. It delivered above 10,000 units each month in the fourth quarter of last year, but deliveries fell to 3,116 units in January, due in part to a plant shutdown for an upgrade.

In the second quarter, Zeekr delivered 27,399 vehicles, up 154.42 percent year-on-year and up 79.85 percent from the first quarter.

In the first half of the year, Zeekr delivered 42,633 vehicles, up 124.27 percent from 19,010 vehicles in the same period last year.

Zeekr aims to double its deliveries this year from last year to about 140,000 units, which means it will need to deliver an average of about 16,230 vehicles per month in the second half of this year.

At the end of June, Zeekr's cumulative deliveries since its inception stood at 120,581 vehicles, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

Zeekr was officially launched as an independent company in March 2021, with its first model, the Zeekr 001, launched on April 15, 2021, and deliveries beginning in October 2021.

On November 1, 2022, Zeekr's second model, the Zeekr 009 MPV, was launched, and its deliveries began on January 15.

On April 12, Zeekr launched its third model, the Zeekr X, and its deliveries in China began on June 12.

To meet full-year sales targets and to address the increasingly competitive EV market, Zeekr today announced the start of a limited-time free option benefit for the Zeekr 001, valid from July-September.

Chinese consumers will receive a free blue exterior trim valued at RMB 6,000 ($830) with the purchase of the entire Zeekr 001 model line.

The Zeekr 001 is currently available in four versions -- WE with a 100-kWh battery pack, WE with an 86 kWh battery pack, ME with a 100 kWh battery pack and YOU with a 100 kWh battery pack, with starting prices of RMB 300,000, RMB 300,000, RMB 349,000 and RMB 349,000 respectively.

Customers who purchase the WE version in the third quarter will receive a free option fund worth RMB 28,000 to receive upgrades including a 100-kWh battery pack, dual-motor 4WD, or air suspension.

Customers who purchase the Zeekr 001 ME Edition will receive a free optional air suspension package worth RMB 28,000.

Customers who purchase the YOU Edition model will receive a free optional Z-Sport package worth RMB 35,000, according to Zeekr.

In addition, customers who purchase the Zeekr 001 YOU Edition can also receive free lifetime charging rights or one-time credits worth RMB 12,000.

Zeekr also offers limited-time loan offers for all models, including a 2-year 0 percent interest, or 5-year 1.99 percent low-interest finance package capped at RMB 200,000.

Zeekr starts pre-sales of Zeekr 001 and Zeekr X in Europe, deliveries to start within this year

Holding Group's premium electric vehicle (EV) brand Zeekr has started pre-sales of two models in Europe, after announcing plans to enter the market two months ago.

Zeekr is bringing the Zeekr 001 shooting brake as well as the Zeekr X city SUV to Europe with starting prices of 59,490 euros ($65,150), and 44,990 euros, respectively, according to a press release today.

Both models will go on sale first in Sweden and the Netherlands, with first deliveries expected to begin within the year, Zeekr said.

Similar to its local counterpart (NYSE: Nio), Zeekr will bring its direct sales model from China to Europe.

Zeekr's first direct offline stores will open in Stockholm, Sweden, and Amsterdam, Netherlands, by the end of the year, and it will be in most of Western Europe by 2026, according to the release.

Zeekr was officially launched as an independent company in March 2021, with its first model, the Zeekr 001, launched on April 15, 2021, and deliveries in China starting in October 2021.

The Zeekr 001 is currently offered in four versions in China with starting prices of RMB 300,000 ($41,410), RMB 300,000, RMB 349,000 and RMB 386,000 respectively.

On November 1, 2022, Zeekr's second model, the Zeekr 009 MPV, was officially launched, and its delivery started on January 15.

On April 12, Zeekr unveiled its third model, the Zeekr X, and its deliveries in China began on June 12.

The Zeekr X is currently offered in three versions in China, with starting prices of RMB 189,800, RMB 209,800 and RMB 209,800 respectively.

On April 18, Zeek announced its European strategy on the first day of the Shanghai auto show, stating that its European headquarters will be located in Amsterdam.

In the Netherlands, Zeekr offers three versions of the Zeekr 001 with starting prices of 59,490 euros, 62,490 euros and 67,490 euros respectively. Zeekr X is offered in two versions in the Netherlands with starting prices of 44,990 euros and 49,490 euros respectively.

In Sweden, the Zeekr 001 is available in three versions starting at 677,000 SEK ($62,760), 707,000 SEK and 757,000 SEK. The Zeekr X is available in two versions in Sweden starting at 550,000 SEK and 595,000 SEK.

The Zeekr 001 and Zeekr X were developed at Zeekr's global design and development center in Gothenburg, Sweden, the company said in April.

Zeekr's European team of more than 1,500 engineers and designers is already in place and has produced multiple models for the Geely. Their long-standing experience has been a core strength of Zeekr's successful entry into Europe, the company said.

Zeekr delivered 8,678 vehicles in May, bringing January-May deliveries to 32,013, up 117.66 percent from the same period last year, according to figures released earlier this month.

The company is aiming to double deliveries this year from last year's 71,941 units to about 140,000.

China NEV insurance registrations for week ending Jun 25: Tesla 16,700, Li Auto 7,500, Nio 3,200

For the week of June 19 to June 25, (NASDAQ: LI) sold 7,500 units, continuing to lead among China's new car-making brands, the company said today on Weibo.

As of June 25, Li Auto has sold 27,300 units this month and is on track to reach its 30,000-unit monthly sales goal, it said.

Li Auto didn't explain what that weekly sales tally was based on, but apparently they are insurance registrations. The company had suspended sharing those numbers in May, but has since resumed sharing them.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) sold 3,200 units last week and 8,000 units from June 1 to June 25, according to figures shared by Li Auto.

Notably, June 22 to June 24 was a three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, and June 25 was a Sunday, but a working day after the holiday.

Nio's weekly sales have continued to grow over the past three weeks, as deliveries of new models began. It was 1,500 units in the week of June 5 to June 11 and 2,000 units in the week of June 12 to June 18.

Nio officially launched the new ES6 on May 24 and the ET5 Touring on June 15.

Deliveries of the new ES6 began on the night of the launch on May 24, and deliveries of the ET5 Touring began on June 16.

In addition to these two new models, Nio will also begin deliveries of the new ES8 on June 28, which was launched on Nio Day 2022 on December 24, 2022.

When Nio reported first-quarter earnings on June 9, it guided for second-quarter deliveries of between 23,000 and 25,000 vehicles, meaning it expects to deliver between 10,187 and 12,187 vehicles in June.

On June 20, Nio signed a share subscription agreement with Abu Dhabi-based investment firm CYVN Holdings, which will invest a total of about $1.1 billion in it.

(NASDAQ: TSLA) sold 16,700 units in China last week and 57,300 units from June 1 to June 25, according to figures shared by Li Auto.

In the two weeks prior to last week, Tesla sold 16,400 units and 14,500 units respectively in China.

From June 1 to June 25, Tesla was the top-selling premium brand in China, surpassing Mercedes-Benz's 52,100 units and above Audi's 51,600 units, according to a table by Li Auto.

On June 16, Tesla announced that Chinese consumers who purchase and take delivery of an already produced rear-wheel drive version of the Model 3 this month will receive an insurance subsidy of RMB 8,000 ($1,110).

(NYSE: XPEV) sold 2,600 units last week and 6,400 units from June 1 to June 25.

Xpeng began pre-sales of the G6 on June 9 at a price starting at RMB 225,000, significantly lower than the Tesla Model Y's starting price of RMB 263,900 in China.

The Xpeng G6 received more than 25,000 orders within 72 hours of the start of the pre-sale, the company announced on Weibo on June 12.

The G6 show cars were already available at Xpeng stores, and the model will officially go on sale June 29 with deliveries starting in July, the company said earlier this month.

Leapmotor sold 3,100 units last week and 10,600 units from June 1 to June 25.

On June 20, Leapmotor announced that it had reached 200,000 cumulative deliveries since its inception.

Leapmotor delivered 12,058 vehicles in May and had 192,962 cumulative deliveries by the end of May, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

NIO ET5 Touring pricing ‘a pleasant surprise,’ says Morgan Stanley

While touring cars might be relatively niche compared to sedans, some comparable offerings in the market can still deliver monthly sales of about 10,000 units on a consistent basis, Tim Hsiao's team said.

(NYSE: NIO) officially launched the ET5 Touring yesterday, and its pricing looks competitive to analysts.

"Pricing of ET5 Touring is more competitive than we thought -- on par with the incumbent ET5 sedan at Rmb 298k+," Morgan Stanley analyst Tim Hsiao's team said in a research note sent to investors yesterday.

While the segment could be relatively niche, NIO management believes the ET5 Touring is likely to outsell its sedan version, the team noted.

In China, the available versions and pricing of the ET5 Touring are identical to those of the regular ET5 sedan.

Including the battery, the 75-kWh version starts at RMB 298,000 ($41,890) and the 100-kWh version at RMB 356,000.

Chinese consumers who choose to purchase the model using the BaaS (battery as a service) service will see the prices start at RMB 228,000 for both versions, with monthly battery rental costs of RMB 980 and RMB 1,680 respectively.

Compared to the regular ET5, the ET5 Touring has more rear-seat headroom, and more vertical space in the trunk, while it also has a lower driving position, and the option for electrochromic sunroofs, Hsiao's team noted.

"Such retrofits will help increase the TAM of the ET5 family by attracting users who attach greater value to the in-car space," the team said.

It's worth noting that in China, derivatives of sedans are a niche market.

However, the unexpected success of the 001, the first model of 's Zeekr brand, has made such models increasingly popular.

For the full year 2022, Zeekr delivered 71,941 Zeekr 001s, reaching its goal of delivering 70,000 vehicles for the year.

While touring cars might be relatively niche compared to sedans, some comparable products in the market still manage to deliver monthly sales of about 10,000 units on a consistent basis, according to Hsiao's team.

In China, the competitive landscape in the touring market is relatively benign, with the main comparables coming mainly from foreign brands such as the Audi S4, Mercedes-Benz CLA and Volvo V60, according to the team.

Whether NIO can successfully ramp up sales of the ET5 Touring in the coming months to meet its goal of reaching 20,000 units per month in the second half of the year remains to be seen, the team said, adding that the company's management expects the ET5 family to contribute about 30 percent of sales.

The ET5 sedan, ET5 Touring and the new ES6 will dominate NIO's sales, Hsiao's team said.

NIO launched the new ES6, the most important model in its history, in China on May 24, with deliveries starting on launch night.

As with the new ES6, NIO produced some ET5 Touring vehicles in advance based on a combination of designer-recommended configurations, and its deliveries officially began today.

NIO launches ET5 Touring with same pricing as regular ET5

Pricing for the ET5 Touring is identical to the regular ET5, with a starting price in China of RMB 298,000 including the battery, and deliveries will begin on June 16.

(NYSE: NIO) has officially launched its highly anticipated new model, the ET5 Touring, and its price in China is a surprise.

The company launched the model today in an online launch event for consumers in China, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Deliveries in China will officially begin tomorrow, while delivery dates in Europe have not yet been announced.

The ET5 Touring launch was different from all previous NIO model launches in that it was the first product launch led by the European team and appears to be the shortest new model launch in its history.

NIO gave a brief overview of the ET5 Touring's exterior, interior and driving experience at this roughly 40-minute launch event, but didn't explain much more about its technical specifications.

This is understandable, after all, NIO's models come standard with dual motors and the same smart driving hardware, and it seems redundant to introduce them again.

Pricing for the ET5 Touring is identical to the regular ET5, starting at RMB 298,000 ($41,620) in China, including the battery.

This is surprising, as the model was previously generally seen as being RMB 10,000 to 20,000 more expensive than the regular ET5.

On June 12, NIO lowered the starting prices for all models by RMB 30,000 and made the battery swap service, which was previously free several times a month, a paid option.

The ET5 Touring is the first model released after NIO implemented the new pricing system, and the entry version comes with a 75-kWh battery pack. Its long-range version comes with a 100-kWh battery pack and starts at RMB 356,000 with the battery included.

Chinese consumers who choose to purchase the model using the BaaS (battery as a service) service will see the prices start at RMB 228,000 for both versions, with monthly battery rental costs of RMB 980 and RMB 1,680 respectively.

NIO's advanced driver assistance systems NOP (Navigate on Pilot) Plus and NAD (NIO Autonomous Driving) are both subscription-based, priced at RMB 380 and RMB 680 per month respectively.

NIO began allowing consumers to lock in their orders for the ET5 Touring after the launch, and show cars and vehicles for test drives are already available at NIO's showrooms in China.

Chinese consumers who order the model now will receive 1 year of free use of NOP+ worth RMB 4,560.

Consumers who order the ET5 Touring on and before July 31 will receive a discount on options worth RMB 5,000.

NIO has started production of the ET5 Touring based on the designer's recommended configuration combinations, and its delivery will officially begin on June 16.

On June 11, CnEVPost experienced the ET5 Touring at a NIO House in Shanghai Pudong New Area, and found that it improved the most criticized areas on the regular ET5, except for the larger trunk space.

For the regular ET5, many owners complained about the high seating position in the driver's seat, which may have been a deterrent for some potential consumers to choose the model.

CnEVPost experienced the ET5 Touring and the regular ET5 at the NIO House and found that the driver's seat of the former can be adjusted significantly lower.

NIO currently offers the following benefits to the first owner of the ET5 Touring:

6 years free internet connectivity with 8GB of monthly traffic;

Lifetime free roadside assistance.

Consumers who order the model before July 31 can pay RMB 30,000 to receive the upgraded benefits package, which includes:

Free lifetime battery swap service, 4 times per month;

10-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty

Free lifetime internet connectivity with 8GB of traffic per month;

Lifetime free roadside assistance.

In China, the NIO ET5 Touring's main competitor will be 's Zeekr 001, which is currently offered in four versions with starting prices of RMB 300,000, RMB 300,000, RMB 349,000 and RMB 386,000 respectively.

Zeekr delivered 8,678 vehicles in May, including the Zeekr 001 and the Zeekr 009 MPV. It did not release a breakdown of deliveries.

On June 12, Zeekr began deliveries of its third model, the Zeekr X, which starts at RMB 189,800.

China NEV insurance registrations for week ending Jun 11: Tesla 16,400, Li Auto 8,400, NIO 1,500

(NASDAQ: LI) continued to flex its muscles, showing strong sales last week while its two local peers, NIO (NYSE: NIO) and (NYSE: XPEV), remained weak.

For the week of June 5 to June 11, Li Auto sold a record 8,400 units, the company said today on Weibo.

That's far more than other new car-making brands and more than the second, third and fourth places on the list combined, it said, adding that Li Auto had sold 11,900 units this month as of June 11.

Li Auto continues to rank in the top five luxury brands sold in the Chinese market and is the highest-ranked Chinese brand on the list, it said.

The company has maintained its focus on premium family customers and has made a strong showing in the segment with its L series models, it said.

With the company's all-electric model and the delivery of the Li L6 next year, Li Auto is confident it will surpass one of the German luxury brands BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi in total sales in 2024, it said.

Li Auto did not explain on what basis that weekly sales were tallied, but apparently, they were insurance registrations. The company had suspended sharing those numbers in May, but has later resumed sharing them.

All of the models Li Auto is currently selling are extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), essentially plug-in hybrids, including the five-seat Li L7 and the six-seat Li L9 and Li L8.

The EREV maker guided a month ago for second-quarter deliveries of between 76,000 and 81,000 units, meaning June deliveries are expected to be between 22,042 and 27,042 units, considering it delivered 25,681 and 28,277 units in April and May, respectively.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) sold 16,400 units last week, putting the June 1-11 cumulative total at 26,000, according to Li Auto. In the previous week, May 29-June 4, Tesla's figure was 14,500 units.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) had 1,500 units last week and 2,800 units this month as of June 11. Its figure for the previous week was 1,700 units.

XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) was at 1,500 units last week and 2,200 units for the month as of June 11. XPeng's figure for the previous week was 2,100 units.

Zeekr begins deliveries of 3rd model, Zeekr X

Nearly 20 percent of 001 and Zeekr 009 owners have opted to buy an additional Zeekr X, Zeekr said.

Zeekr, 's premium electric vehicle (EV) brand, has begun deliveries of the Zeekr X, its third production vehicle, which was officially launched two months ago.

Zeekr delivered the Zeekr X to its first owners in 25 cities in China today, according to a press release.

Zeekr was officially launched as an independent company in March 2021 with two other models, the Zeekr 001 hatchback and the Zeekr 009 MPV, currently on sale.

The company delivered 8,678 vehicles in May, up 7.12 percent from 8,101 vehicles in April and its fourth sequential increase.

By the end of May, Zeekr's cumulative deliveries since inception stood at 109,961 vehicles, data monitored by CnEVPost show.

Zeekr launched the Zeekr X on April 12, and the model is produced at one of Geely's plants in Chengdu, Sichuan province in southwestern China, rather than the Ningbo plant in Zhejiang province where the Zeekr 001 and Zeekr 009 are produced.

The Zeekr X is available in three versions, one starting at RMB 189,800 ($26,580) and the other two at RMB 209,800.

The Zeekr X has been available for pre-order since launch, and the model is targeting 40,000 deliveries this year. Zeekr is aiming to double its overall deliveries this year from last year to about 140,000 units.

Nearly 20 percent of Zeekr 001 and Zeekr 009 owners have chosen to purchase an additional Zeekr X to meet the travel needs of different family members, the company said today.

The average order amount for the Zeekr 001 was RMB 336,000 and for the Zeekr 009 RMB 527,000, it said when it announced May delivery figures on June 1.

The Zeekr X is available in both a four-seat version and a five-seat version, and the company said today that 70 percent of consumers are now opting for the four-seat version.

Store visit: First impression of NIO ET5 Touring before official launch

The ET5 Touring offers more trunk space while improving the high driver's seat that the regular ET5 was complained about. The key now is the price.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will hold a launch event for the ET5 Touring starting at 19:00 Beijing time on June 15, and the model is already allowing visitors to experience it in its stores before then.

As of June 10, the ET5 Touring show cars are available at 248 NIO stores in 48 cities across China. In Shanghai, where NIO's global headquarters is located, the model is already available at 10 NIO Houses and 15 NIO Spaces.

I went to one of the NIO Houses in Shanghai's Pudong New Area on Sunday, June 11 at around 9 am to check out the model and left at around 10 am.

The store is located in a large shopping district and the office hour start time was 10:00 am. Even though I visited before then, the store staff allowed me to enter.

NIO is one of the strongest local car companies in terms of abilities to build beautiful models, and the ET5 Touring is clearly another well-designed one.

It's worth noting that photos of a car give a very different feeling than seeing it in person, and this applies to all models of all brands.

The gray ET5 Touring in the NIO House I visited has very natural body lines. In fact, a non-offensive exterior design is already the basis for a car that is acceptable to most people.

I don't want to discuss too much about its appearance, but you can get a general impression through the pictures in this article.

It should be noted that just a few years ago, for the average Chinese consumer, family cars consisted only of sedans and SUVs, and derivatives of sedans were not considered. You also hardly ever saw a gasoline-powered touring or shooting brake model on the streets of Shanghai.

's premium electric vehicle subsidiary is the first of the local brands to try to tap into the sedan derivative market, announcing the all-electric Zeekr 001 shooting brake on April 15, 2021, with deliveries starting in October 2021.

The Zeekr 001 is Zeekr's first model, and it is a brave move to target an unproven market. The model delivered 11,337 units last December, bringing full-year 2022 deliveries to 71,941 vehicles.

The ET5 Touring, a derivative of the regular ET5 sedan, is equipped with the same powerful assisted driving hardware as NIO's other NT 2.0 platform-based models, including a roof-mounted LiDAR, and four NVIDIA Orin SoCs capable of delivering a total of more than 1,000 TOPS of performance.

One of the biggest attractions of the ET5 Touring compared to the regular ET5 is the larger trunk space. Such models give consumers the same driving experience as a sedan while gaining load capacity close to that of an SUV.

The ET5 Touring is not yet available for test drives, and NIO will officially launch the model on June 15, with test drives available on that day.

For the regular ET5, many owners have complained about the high seating position in the driver's seat, which may be a deterrent for some potential customers to choose this model.

I got into the driver's seat of the regular ET5 at that NIO House and found that this issue was indeed apparent, especially when compared to my own Model 3 Long Rang, a 2020 purchase.

The regular ET5 feels very much like the driver is sitting in an SUV, even with the seat position cranked all the way down. For the Model 3, on the other hand, the appropriate seating position for me is with the seat height cranked to the middle gear.

NIO has obviously learned this lesson from the regular ET5, and the ET5 Touring driver's seat has a significantly lower seating position. The feeling of sitting in the ET5 Touring driver's seat is almost the same as when I drove my own Model 3.

The ET5 sedan seems to have been experiencing demand issues after China's purchase subsidies for new energy vehicles (NEVs) expired at the end of last year, and the price will be critical for the ET5 Touring to make the ET5 family shine again.

Earlier today, NIO announced an RMB 30,000 ($4,200) price cut for the entire new model lineup, effective immediately, but the previously free battery swap service several times a month has become a paid option.

Under the latest pricing system, the starting price of the ET5, including the battery, is reduced to RMB 298,000. If consumers choose to lease the battery using the BaaS (battery as a service) option, the starting price of the vehicle is RMB 228,000.

For the ET5 Touring, many expect that its starting price in China, including the battery, will likely be RMB 10,000 to 20,000 higher than the regular ET5.

In addition to targeting the new sedan derivative market in China, NIO also hopes to sell the ET5 Touring in Europe, where such models have a higher acceptance.

A few hours after the ET5 Touring's China launch, NIO will hold a European launch event on June 16 at 1:00 am Beijing time (June 15 at 1:00 pm US Eastern time) to launch the ET5 Touring, as well as the EL6, known as the ES6 in China.
