Tesla announced today that it is opening its Supercharger network in the Chinese mainland on a pilot basis to other brands of electric vehicles (EVs), following its practice in more than 10 other markets.

The EV maker is initially opening 10 Supercharger stations for 37 non-Tesla models, according to an announcement it posted on WeChat.

Notably, the pilot is currently limited to Beijing and Shanghai, with each city offering five Supercharger stations to participate in the pilot.

The 37 non-Tesla models include the NIO ES6, NIO EC6, P7, Li ONE, 001, BYD Han EV, BYD Tang EV, and Polestar 2.

In addition to the Supercharger stations, Tesla has opened 120 destination charging stations on a pilot basis, covering 25 provinces and cities in the Chinese mainland.

To date, Tesla has more than 1,600 Supercharger stations in the Chinese mainland, offering more than 10,000 Superchargers, according to the announcement.

It also has more than 700 destination charging stations in the Chinese mainland, offering more than 2,000 charging piles.

At the end of 2021, Tesla opened its charging network to non-Tesla vehicles on a pilot basis in Europe, and the service is now available to owners in more than 10 countries and regions worldwide, the company said.

Now, owners of non-Tesla-branded EVs in the Chinese mainland can also enjoy an efficient, convenient and dense Tesla charging network, it said.

Tesla hopes its open and innovative business logic will bring together more industry partners to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, it added.

Shanghai auto show: Takeaways from Deutsche Bank

Edison Yu's team shares their key takeaways on new model pricing, design, ADAS, and ultra-fast charging.

As one of the most important auto shows in several years, the ongoing Shanghai auto show is attracting a lot of interest. In a research note sent to investors today, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team shares their thoughts on the event.

This year's Shanghai auto show began last week, with media days on April 18-19, professional visitor days on April 20-21, and general public access on April 22 - 27.

Yu's team shared their four key takeaways regarding new model pricing, local design, Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) capabilities, and ultra-fast charging.

"Pricing to be competitive at least through early 2024 With the price war raging on, we continue to expect OEMs to be aggressive as market share is the #1 priority," the team wrote.

Although no significant price cuts were announced at the show, automakers were very careful in disclosing prices.

did not reveal pricing details for the G6 other than the previous range of 200,000 to 300,000 yuan. Likewise, NIO did not detail the price of the new ES6, the team noted.

If demand stays low, there could be another wave of price cuts, so the automakers do not want to overprice their new models. In addition, lithium carbonate prices have fallen sharply, providing more cushion for pure electric vehicles, Yu's team said.

The team expects G6 pricing to trend toward the lower end of the range previously mentioned by XPeng, especially given that the X starts at just 190,000 yuan and the Model Y could see one more price cut this year.

To offset the drop in average selling price, automakers are taking steps to squeeze the structural costs of new platforms, such as XPeng's SEPA 2.0 platform, according to the team.

In terms of product design, the quality of local models is improving rapidly, and several local automakers began turning to foreign talent a few years ago to speed up the process, the team said.

BYD's design chief is Wolfang Egger, previously at Audi, and NIO's vice president of design is Kris Tomasson who came over from BMW, the team noted.

The team highlighted two models that really showcase this shift: the BYD Song L and the Hozon GT Speedster.

"There are many other examples of bold and sleek design at the show and we expect this to be the new norm as the market shifts from ICE to EV," the team wrote.

With design and cost advantages, a natural extension is to export. During the show, Zeekr provided more details about its European strategy, the team noted.

On the ADAS side, Yu's team said subscriptions have proven difficult to monetize.

"We would have thought selling an ADAS subscription service could be easy next step. However, consumers are reluctant to adopt this business model," the team wrote.

XPeng is trying to dramatically reduce the cost of its XNGP system while improving its performance.

is currently beta testing the City NOA software with a goal of rolling it out to 100 cities nationwide by the end of 2023. The company believes its AD Max 3.0 system will be able to operate without HD maps and guarantees that all upgrades will be free for life with no subscription fees, the team noted.

NIO's NOP+ beta program is expected to end at the end of June and then begin charging subscribers RMB 380 per month.

"NIO is offering 2 years for free to 2023 ET7 buyers who pay the order deposit before June and we would expect this subscription to be increasingly used a promotional bundle to boost sales," the team wrote.

In terms of ultra-fast charging facilities, Yu's team said that automakers are just beginning to build up such capabilities, and real-world charging requires synchronization of the car, charger and grid. If any part becomes a bottleneck, charging speeds will not reach maximum performance.

NIO's ultra-fast 500 kW charger is now in service and open to other brands.

XPeng is rapidly rolling out its new S4 480 kW DC ultra-fast charging station, with a target of 500 this year.

Li Auto is focused on 800V solutions and expects its upcoming battery electric vehicle (BEV)to have 400 km of range in 10 minutes, the team noted.

Li Auto announced on April 18 that its first all-electric model will be the world's first to feature 's 4C Qilin Battery.

By 2025, Li Auto's product array will include a super flagship model, five extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and five BEVs, the company said.

China Deliveries Electric eMobility eV EV Data Insurance Registrations Li Auto Neta Nio Tesla Weekly Data XPeng

Insurance registrations for week ending Apr 16: Tesla 12,500, Li Auto 6,300, NIO 700

NIO's weak performance may be because it is on the eve of multiple product switches, as it will begin deliveries of the new ET7, new ES6, EC7 in May and will begin deliveries of the new ES8 in June.

(NASDAQ: TSLA) and (NASDAQ: LI) kept sales strong last week, while NIO (NYSE: NIO) was weak, the latest data show.

Li Auto sold 6,300 units in the week of April 10 to April 16, far outpacing China's other new car-making brands, the automaker said in an April 19 post to its WeChat account.

Li Auto didn't say what the sales figure was based on, but it was apparently insurance registrations. Previously, we had access to the data every Tuesday, and Li Auto's practice was to share some of it on Wednesdays.

The main source that provides data on auto insurance registrations in China stopped sharing that data this month, but Li Auto continues to share some of it.

Tesla sold 12,500 units last week, according to the data table shared by Li Auto. Tesla's sales in the previous week were 6,973, according to data previously shared by Li Auto.

NIO sold about 700 units last week, according to the data. The electric vehicle maker sold 1,316 units in the previous week.

NIO's weak performance may be because it is on the eve of multiple product switches. It launched the new ET7 and unveiled the new ES6 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, with deliveries both set to begin in May.

In addition to the new ET7 and the new ES6, NIO will also start delivering the EC7 coupe SUV in May and will start delivering the new ES8 in June, according to plans it previously annouced.

sold 1,300 units last week, up from 904 units the week before, according to data shared by Li Auto. XPeng unveiled the new SUV G6 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, but pricing information is unknown.

sold 1,600 units last week, up from 1,476 the week before. Leapmotor sold 1,700 units last week, up from 1,157 the week before. Neta sold 1,800 units last week, up from 1,526 the week before.

Among premium brands, BMW sold 14,500 cars last week including internal combustion engine vehicles as well as NEVs, Mercedes-Benz 13,400 and Audi 12,600, according to data shared by Li Auto.

Separately, retail sales of NEVs in China from April 1-16 were 223,000 units, up 89 percent year-on-year and up 13 percent from the same period last month, according to data released yesterday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Considering that NEV retail sales were 91,000 from April 1 to April 9, this means that during the week of April 10 to April 16, NEV retail sales in China were 132,000 units, up 45 percent from the previous week.

From April 10-16, retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 335,328 units, up 80 percent year-on-year and up 23 percent from the same period last month, according to the CPCA.

Li Auto unveils all-electric solution, 1st BEV model to feature CATL’s 4C Qilin Battery

By 2025, Li Auto's product portfolio will include a super flagship model, five EREVs and five BEVs.  |  Li Auto US Li Auto HK

Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) today officially unveiled its all-electric solution, following the success of its extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) in China.

The company's all-electric solution, based on the 800 V high-voltage platform, enables a battery electric vehicle (BEV) to get 400 kilometers of range on a 10-minute charge, it announced today at an event on the first day of the Shanghai auto show.

With the launch of this solution, Li Auto will officially enter a phase of parallel development of its EREV and BEV product lines.

By 2025, Li Auto's product array will include one super flagship model, five EREVs, and five BEVs, it said.

By then, Li Auto's models for the market priced above RMB 200,000 will fully meet the needs of family users, the company said.

Li Auto's first all-electric model will be the world's first to feature 's 4C Qilin Battery, it said today.

C refers to the battery's charge multiplier, and 4C means that the battery pack can theoretically be fully charged in one-fourth of an hour.

CATL officially launched the Qilin Battery, or CTP (cell to pack) 3.0 battery, on June 23 last year, claiming to bring a new level of battery system integration to a new level.

The 009 is the world's first Qilin Battery-equipped MPV, and deliveries of the MPV equipped with this battery began yesterday. Li Auto previously said that its first BEV will also be an MPV.

The core technology of Li Auto's 800V solution is a high-voltage electric drive system based on third-generation power semiconductors, and the 4C supercharger pile will reach a maximum output of 480 kW.

By the end of May, Li Auto's first 25 supercharging stations will open for trial operation and be available to all electric vehicle owners, it announced today.

Each station will be equipped with three regular fast-charging piles and one 4C super-fast charging pile, it said.

By the end of this year, Li Auto will have completed the construction of more than 300 supercharging stations located along highways, it said.

By 2025, Li Auto will have 3,000 supercharging stations covering 90 percent of China's highway miles and major cities, the company said.

In addition to announcing the all-electric solution, Li Auto today also unveiled its latest-generation assisted driving system, AD Max 3.0, and said the software will be free for life.

Li Auto's current assisted driving systems include AD Max and AD Pro.

AD Max 2.0 is powered by NVIDIA's Orin X chip and Hesai's LiDAR, while AD Pro 2.0 is powered by Horizon Robotics' Journey 5 chip.

AD Max 3.0's all-scenario Navigation on ADAS (NOA) will kick off internal testing this quarter and will cover more than 100 cities by the end of the year, Li Auto said.

Shanghai auto show: Deutsche Bank’s preview

While auto shows have generally started to lose some significance as automakers turn to dedicated launch events, this year's Shanghai auto show could be an exception, said Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team.

(A file photo taken by CnEVPost at the Shanghai auto show two years ago shows an ET7 wrapped in a blanket.)

The Shanghai auto show will begin in less than 10 hours, and it will be interesting to know what analysts expect from the event.

"While auto shows have generally started to lose some significance as OEMs shifted to dedicated launch events, this year's Shanghai Auto Show (starts officially tomorrow) could be an exception," Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team said in a research note sent to investors today.

Most notably, this will be the first auto show since Covid reopened, bringing together many executives and industry observers from overseas for the first time in years, the team said.

Product cycles for electric vehicles are significantly faster compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, as automakers struggle to maintain customer attention and loyalty, meaning many of the vehicles unveiled at the show will begin delivery in short order, the team noted.

NIO (NYSE: NIO), (NYSE: XPEV) and (NASDAQ: LI) all have new announcements coming this week, with NIO set to officially unveil its new ES6, historically its best-selling SUV, Yu's team wrote.

NIO's sales have been sluggish in recent months due to customer expectations of a platform changeover, so the new ES6 will be a very important product, with deliveries likely to begin in June, the team said.

In addition to the new ES6, NIO will also unveil the new ET7 at the Shanghai auto show, the flagship sedan whose sales in the past few months have been well below its performance in the second half of last year.

The updated version of the NIO ET7 will feature some improvements to its interior and deliveries are expected to begin in a few months, Yu's team said.

For XPeng, it will unveil its G6 SUV at the show, which Yu's team believes is the most important model for the company's ambition to reignite volume growth.

"Pricing details will likely not be finalized though as management gauges the initial consumer response. Deliveries are set to begin in June," the team wrote.

Li Auto will launch its dual-energy strategy by unveiling its all-electric solution tomorrow.

The company's first BEV will be a premium MPV and production is expected to begin by the end of this year, Yu's team noted.

Li Auto management recently said it plans to spend RMB 10 billion yuan to build 3,000 supercharging stations by 2025, and further details of this roadmap are to be expected, the team said.

In addition to these three Chinese upstarts, traditional Chinese OEMs have been very active over the past year, the team said.

So far, GAC and have been the most consistent in terms of volume, according to the team.

Zeekr plans to bring the recently launched Zeekr X compact SUV to Europe along with the Zeekr 001 shooting brake model, and more details on the European strategy will be provided this week.

Also, BYD has been quite active, showing off its new Yangwang U9 electric supercar with the new DiSus-X body control system last week.

This week, BYD will unveil the Song L BEV and also begin taking pre-orders for the U8, a premium off-road SUV.

" The company is clearly trying to move upmarket by establishing bold 'halo' vehicles for its new brand," Yu's team wrote.

BYD also announced that the Dolphin and Seal BEVs will be available in Europe later this year. Both models will be smaller and cheaper and should compete more effectively in the low end of mass market, the team said.

In addition to local Chinese carmakers, global OEMs are also showing off new products, and upcoming new models will include the Polestar 4, Smart #3, Lexus LM and Maybach SUV BEV, the team noted.

We start this post with a table showing the booth locations of the major car companies and follow it with a full floor plan of the halls.

Specifically, NIO's booth is 6A01 in Hall 6.1, XPeng is 6A08 in Hall 6.1, and Li Auto is 6A04 in Hall 6.1.

BYD is at 7A06 in Hall 7.1, and its Yangwang brand is at 8A05 in Hall 8.1.

The absence of Tesla in these maps means it will not be at the Shanghai auto show.

Tesla attended the last Shanghai auto show two years ago, but entered the spotlight then because of a female owner's protest on the roof of a car. Since then, Tesla has not participated in any auto shows in China.

The Shanghai auto show will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center from April 18 - 27, where April 18 - 19 will be the media days, April 20 - 21 will be the professional visitors' days, and the general public will be able to enter and visit from April 22 - 27.

China Electric eMobility eV Product Launch Zeekr Zeekr X

Zeekr launches Zeekr X SUV to gain further share from market dominated by German luxury automakers

CEO believes that despite having a presence in the compact car market, German luxury brands are not offering any truly competitive luxury products.

German luxury automakers are seeing a loss of share in the premium market in China as they are slow to make the transition to electrification. Now, with the launch of a new electric SUV with strong performance and competitive pricing, this process could be further accelerated.

Zeekr, Geely Holding Group's premium electric vehicle (EV) brand, officially launched its third model, the Zeekr X, at an event in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu on Wednesday.

The model is based on Geely's Sustainable Electric Architecture (SEA) and is positioned as an urban sport utility vehicle suitable for adults, children and any accompanying pets, Zeekr said.

With a length, width and height of 4,450mm, 1,836mm and 1,572mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,750mm, the Zeekr X is a typical compact SUV.

Zeekr hopes to disrupt the compact luxury car market, which is dominated by Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, with the SUV. Andy An, its CEO, said at the launch that the market currently has only luxury brands but no real luxury products.

With the launch of the Zeekr X, compact size no longer means sacrificing space, performance or features, An said.

Zeekr has packed the Zeekr X with a host of features that feel fresh, including facial recognition unlocking, a moveable center screen, electric folding rear seats, and an in-car refrigerator that can provide temperatures as low as -15 degrees Celsius.

In terms of performance, the dual-motor version of the Zeekr X boasts a combined maximum power of 315 kW and maximum torque of 543 Nm, and can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.

Even the single-motor version of the Zeekr X can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

This kind of powerful performance from a compact model is not often seen in the Chinese auto industry, and such markets are usually considered niche markets.

However, An said in a media group interview after the launch that the compact market lacks true luxury products and that this needs to be fundamentally changed.

An does not believe it is reasonable to judge a model's potential by the existing market landscape, because as long as a car company offers a product that meets demand, the market will get bigger, as proven by Zeekr's first model, the Zeekr 001.

The shooting brake market targeted by the Zeekr 001 was previously seen as having a very small total addressable market in China, but the model was an unexpected success and 71,941 units were delivered in 2022.

The Zeekr X is available in three versions, one starting at RMB 189,800 ($27,610) and the other two at RMB 209,800.

An told media, including CnEVPost, after the event that Zeekr will not launch models priced lower than the Zeekr X.

All three versions of the Zeekr X are powered by a ternary lithium battery pack with a capacity of 66 kWh and a CLTL range of up to 560 km.

The Zeekr X is already taking pre-orders and deliveries will start in June.

In response to a question from CnEVPost, An said the company is targeting 40,000 deliveries of the SUV this year.

In addition to being available in China, the Zeekr X will also be available in Europe. An said there is plenty of room in the global market for compact SUVs.

An mentioned that the Zeekr 001 will also be brought to Europe, without revealing more about when, but said Zeekr will officially unveil its European strategy at the Shanghai auto show in a few days.

The Zeekr 001 was launched on April 15, 2021, and deliveries began in October 2021. On November 1, 2022, Zeekr's second model, the Zeekr 009 MPV, was launched, and deliveries began on January 15.

Zeekr aims to double its sales to about 140,000 units this year. It delivered 15,234 vehicles in the first quarter of the year, and the goal means it needs to deliver an average of about 14,000 vehicles per month next.

China NEV insurance registrations for week ending April 2: BYD 46,218, Tesla 14,275, NIO 2,730

In the past five weeks, vehicles had 11,929 insurance registrations. The company delivered 10,378 vehicles in March.

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sector saw continued improvement last week, with most major players posting sales increases.

In the week ending April 2, insurance registrations for all vehicles in China were 465,500, up 46.9 percent year-on-year and up 19.9 percent from the previous week, according to data shared today by several auto bloggers.

Of these, 139,500 were NEVs, up 44.7 percent year-on-year and up 9.28 percent from the previous week, with a penetration rate of 29.96 percent.

Gasoline vehicles were 326,000 units, up 47.9 percent year-on-year and up 25.1 percent from the previous week.

vehicles continued to register the highest number of insurance units last week at 46,218, up from 43,490 the previous week.

In the past five weeks -- February 27 to April 2 -- BYD NEVs had 204,195 insurance registrations in China.

As a comparison, BYD sold 207,080 wholesale NEVs in March, including 13,312 units sold overseas, according to data it released on April 2.

Insurance registrations for vehicles in China last week were 14,275, slightly lower than the previous week's 15,886.

In the past five weeks, Tesla vehicles had 79,171 insurance registrations in China.

Tesla sold 88,869 China-made vehicles in March, including exports, according to data released earlier today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Those numbers mean that Tesla's Shanghai plant may have exported only a few thousand vehicles in March, with the rest for deliveries to Chinese consumers.

Tesla's pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half.

Insurance registrations for NIO vehicles were 2,730 last week, up from 1,909 the previous week.

In the past five weeks, NIO vehicles had 11,929 insurance registrations.

NIO delivered 10,378 vehicles in March, including 3,203 SUVs, and 7,175 sedans, according to data released by the company on April 1.

China Electric eMobility eV Industry News Research Note

China auto sales sluggish on consumer sentiment, improvement expected in Q2, says Deutsche Bank

Price wars have now become the consensus among investors, setting a relatively low bar for EV makers to beat.

Low consumer sentiment in the wake of the Covid wave has led to weak auto sales in China, though the situation is expected to see relief in the second quarter, and the launch of new models and lower lithium carbonate prices are also encouraging, according to Deutsche Bank.

The underlying cause of sluggish auto sales in China can be mostly attributed to consumer sentiment. After a quick Covid reopening, consumers prioritized spending on services but reduced purchases of durable goods, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team said in a research note sent to investors today.

In the first two months of the year, China saw a 12 percent year-on-year increase in the dining and lodging sector, and spending on food, clothing, jewelry and even furniture also increased, the team said, adding that the only exceptions were cars and smartphones, with the former falling 13 percent year-on-year.

In addition, as automakers cut prices, consumers felt more compelled to wait for better deals, the team said.

Price wars are now the consensus among investors, which has set a relatively low bar for electric vehicle (EV) makers to beat, the team said.

"In particular, and XPEV will see a clear sales/margin trough in 1Q followed by a large upswing from new model launches and lower lithium carbonate prices (4-6% points gross margin tailwind)," the team wrote.

Looking ahead, Deutsche Bank's China macro team believes consumer spending on durable goods should normalize in the second half of this year.

The job market is expected to improve due to a strong recovery in the service sector, and the real estate market is also on track to recover, benefiting from substantial excess household savings and favorable lending policies, according to the note.

These could lead to an increase in consumer confidence, which in turn could lead to a recovery in spending on cars and other consumer durables.

While the price war initially focused on EVs, traditional internal combustion engine automakers have also begun offering big promotions to clear their inventories, especially for vehicles that do not meet China's new emissions standards.

As a sign of the height of the price war, there were reportedly Toyota dealers offering a free gasoline car with the purchase of its bZ4x EV, which has been suffering from sluggish demand. Volkswagen has also cut prices on internal combustion engine and EV models in its lineup, the team noted.

This has led to an even more challenging pricing environment that should last at least through the end of April, Yu's team said.

"Ultimately, we expect weaker players to get squeezed out of the market (e.g., Enovate, Leap Motor, WM) and more stable pricing to emerge," the team wrote.

For the second quarter, the team continues to see industry volume growth and has raised its NEV retail sales forecast from 1.65 million to 1.75 million, implying a 32 percent quarter-on-quarter increase, a 49 percent year-on-year increase, and a 35 percent penetration rate.

Here's the team's take on the performance of the major EV makers that have already announced March deliveries.

March OEM recap

Li Auto delivered 20,823 vehicles (+25% MoM, +89% YoY), below our forecast. However, this still translated to nearly 20% market share of the 300-500k RMB premium SUV market in China. The new L7 five-seat SUV began deliveries in March and will see volume grow sequentially.

The company exited the month with 299 retail stores and 318 servicing centers.

NIO delivered 10,378 units (-15% MoM, +4% YoY), below our forecast. De-stocking of older 866 gen-1 models seems to be nearing an end.

Additionally, a face-lift is coming for the ET7 which is likely suppressing demand for that model. NIO exited the month with 1,339 battery swap stations and 1,285 fast charging stations.

XPeng delivered 7,002 units (+17% MoM; -55% YoY), below our expectations. P7 did sell 3,030 units though, representing a 32% sequential improvement. The P7i face-lift should help volume in 2Q as management expressed confidence in the initial order book.

also began the rollout of the first part of its XNGP high level ADAS platform in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai, enabling city pilot capabilities for its newest models.

Initially, the systems will still use HD mapping but this will be phased out in 2H23 allowing the full capabilities of XNGP to work in greater number of cities.

The company believes its software perception running on XNET deep neural network training will allow it to reduce reliance on HD mapping which only a few large cities have available.

delivered 6,663 vehicles (+22% MoM; +271% YoY).

NIO delivers 10,378 vehicles in Mar, down 14.6% from Feb
